the real issue i've seen in any country i visited, rich or poor, is the cost of housing.

and governments are doing absolutely nothing about this, actually they all refuse to build fair priced council homes for the poors.

as for employers soon they will ask for a master's degree even to grill burgers or to clean toilets, that's exactly the trend i'm witnessing now apart in jobs where "soft skills" are in high demand (sales in particular).

these are the direct result of governments abdicating from their natural roles and becoming a puppet of the ruling plutocrats.

where it will lead ? to high criminality, to total corruption, and ultimately to civil war.

where we are going as you said only beaureucrats and nepotismo will live a comfy life while the common people , esp those with huge students loan to repay , is more like what happened to the chinese in the dynasty era.  the whole country will be poor , while those in the forbidden city live a high and mighty life as the emperor picks all the young virgins from the countryside to be his maids and concubines.  i think it is already happening with africa where the only ppl eating well are the govt.
soon, the first world will run into this problem too, as the empire age begins in the (cough cough (free world).
as for having a MA to flip burgers, i think that is already happening as i know several graduates still flipping burgers. Too many qualified people with no jobs to go to, because the Union is too powerful.
They will not let the highly overpaid unqualified seniority ppl go. How much is the bus driver and underground transit workers minding the turnstiles paid???  some are actually earning as much as your kid with a degree , or the mechanic who is repairing your car.

It's entitlement thinking because some people think they "deserve" more pay for a job that requires no education, no experience and very little responsibility. Nobody "deserves" anything. And $25,000 a year is a lot more than minimum wage. A full-time minimum wage worker only makes $15,000 a year. My first job out of school in 1994 only paid $18,000 a year, and I had a family to support.

i'm not even sure waiter(ess) job is very little responsibility. i have sat and watched in many bars, restaurants, and the treatment many customers give to the people serving them, whether it is in an ethnic shish kebab fast food or a pub, it takes the server a lot of child-psychology/ anger management therapist experience to go through a day's work.
if you think it is no responsibility, you obviously like most politicians have not done commoners' work

moreover, many service people are students who pay their own way through university
and they are not just no qualification types you imply...
even the guy at the parking lot , some of them no doubt have more qualification than you

When I see the sales map, I don't see much sales coming from Asia like China, Japan, Korea and India.  These are potentially big market.  I hope Shutterstock will make more effort to sell there.

As I think there are couple of reason for not seeing much sales from Asia.

It's cheaper to rent a photographer/vector artist in most of the Asian countries compared to buying from stock image sites. Especially in India and China, labor is much cheaper compared to Western countries.

And.... many of them don't care about copyrights and only few countries have proper laws in action against copyright violation cases. So, Google images work for most of them.

not just asian countries and even other non-asian countries don't care about copyrights.
google for those illegitimate stock sites "if you like my free photos, buy me a cup of coffee" theft sites .
these guys are not asians, but caucasians .
but yes, asian countries are bad too... they will take anything for free if possible
eg china pride themselves of legitimate imitation wine and rolexes. they sell these wines openly in wine stores. in fact, there was a write-up some time ago on this issue .

General - Top Sites / Re: Would you like the real reason?
« on: April 03, 2015, 13:01 »
the problem is much like everywhere else or even especially shutterstock... no basic standard for reviewers to follow. you can have one reviewer who will look at your work shot like shelma1 said at the same shoot approved and another reject.  even identical shots will have focus is not where it should be and the other is fine. eg bowl of fruit with the bowl edge in the rear not in focus .
one reviewer will see that it is the fruit that is the point of focus. the other will want all of it to be in focus ... no doubt clueless about the use of critical focus.
depends, as someone said, you get some photo 101 teacher who knows only depth of field
and no clue about the idea of point of focal interest.
or you get one who thinks everything has to follow the golden rule and white balance has to always be white, even sunset with a white house and a white car has to be white or else you get wrong WB.
no training whatsoever for all reviewers. just go as you think. so, no doubt inconsistency.

and then there atilla where everything is wrong. so long as (s)he gets paid.

in fact i hear tell that atilla is a she... if so, she must be letting her kid do the reviewing
so no surprise you get a mass rejection incident most of the time. kid went wild with the mouse LMAO

if other micro sites have no choice other than following SS's lead, they'd better get cracking and find a way to crack the large enterprise market.)

good point... because it's pretty obvious it is not working for the other sites to just follow ss. look to the right, after so many years they are all still in single digit ... and those in the big 4 and middle tier are not doing anything.  it reminds me of all those stores and fast foods  following walmart and mcdonalds.
there has to be something different in stock photography , in the way that high price restaurants and custom stores  survive in spite of mcdonalds and walmart.
i would say exclusive image higher price instead of exclusive contributors would be the way to go.
not the offset stocksy elitist mentality, but something more in line with dreamstime of exclusive image only that dreamstime failed because the exclusive image were just no different from the usual micro images available on ss.
istock tried something like that too before they crashed and burnt with getty killing them. how ironic ... gettysburg  :D

1231
though I would DEFINITELY NOT say SS is a 'top tier photo agency'?!?

it's a public company at NYSE and among the top 10 agencies worldwide if we talk about sales so i think we can say it's a "top tier agency" at this point.

for anything else i agree 100% SS is the LIDL/ALDI/Walmart of stock and one of the main root causes for the actual devalueing of stock photography in general.

+1 Their business strategy of keeping prices ultra low for 10 years with the objective of capturing market share is one of the main reasons we are seeing a massive devaluing of our assets.

The rest of the sites have no option but to follow their lead and it is surprising that more contributors do not see this. Shutterstocks business strategy has taken its toll on microstock as a whole.

or the big golden M of microstock . worse still, the bargain store like those dollar mart, etc...
where everyone packs in there to pick up everything for a buck. in ss case , pennies.
would be wonderful if in fact ss gives away our work for a minimum of a buck, though... wouldn't it
???

1232
Well, we've always suspected that many reviewers are not exactly top-tier or even remotely qualified. I was always willing to give the reviewers a little slack, but today . . .

Rejections for "Editorial Caption--Image requires proper caption and must be tagged as editorial."

After thousands of editorial acceptances I'm pretty sure I have the process down pat. The above reason is simply not true. Where did it come from and what are they thinking?

moral case in a nutshell ----
masochist aspires to be microstock contributors
sadist aspires to be ss reviewers

atilla bloodline thrive on giving rejections to experienced types like you  :D
i too am seeking blood lately, so maybe i will apply to be a reviewer 8)

tips are only a north american thing, in the rest of the world waiters are paid a normal salary like everybody else.
Nope! That's not correct.  In some countries tips in resturants is even mandatory by law.

;D ;D ;Dkeep the change was not invented by North Am. there are equivalence in portuguese, arabic, spanish, mandarin, cantonese, japanese,etc...
so definitely, you don't just tip in USA,CDA,Mexico.

I have no sympathy for them, either. And I am guessing that companies will start cutting back employee's hours to compensate, too. Greedy ba$tard$ will NEVER let the average working joe and jill make a decent living.

some hospitality business make a lot of money in tips. i remember how as a student working in a pub (Bar) where you can rake in a lot depending on your service and PR with your customers. otoh, in certain districts where customers are know to be tight-ar$e stingy SOBs, the waiter/ress are not so lucky.
.. eg serving a full table of 50 ppl after a football match or a company's goingaway dinner, some are known to get tip of a quarter. at the other end of town, the same pub (bar) gets 15% usually.
so it is no surprise that owners get greedy.
many ethnic business do not have this luxury; in fact waiter/ress do not get paid if no customer.
not that the ethnic businesses are crooks, but more so that they cannot compete against the gen-pop businesses.
i guess it is the same with photography and music. some rake in, others barely get leftovers.
somewhere there should be a better solution but no one really cares about these sector of the pop.
believe me, it is not easy being a waiter or a cashier. ppl in general are rude , and do in fact treat these ppl like the old stereotype slaves or maids.
compared to telemarketing clientele where you really do not see their ugly faces, the job of a telemarketers would be considered easy vs that of a waiter/cashier

1235
In a lot of less rich countries you will earn less than 100 $ flipping burgers (or equivalent) and 50$ cleaning toilets
In the country where I live the monthly average salary is around  $150.
Here nobody will spit on 8 or 10 times the average salary

In many rich countries  you have even more ss contributors working hard with expensive equipment, internet service, electricity payment, etc etc etc
earning maybe as much as  them in less rich countries 100 $ flipping burgers (or equivalent) and 50$ cleaning toilets

1236
I always thought the reviewers at iStock were chosen from contributors, I don't remember seeing them advertise for reviewers from the general public.  Shutterstock used to ask contributors if they wanted to be inspectors I guess that's changed?

even that is a conflict of interest. reviewers should not be contributors or good buddies of certain contributors.

Work From Home Vector & Illustration Image Reviewer (Europe)
http://www.shutterstock.com/jobs/listings/2709-work-from-home-vector-illustration-image-reviewer-europe-

so, despite making billions of $ they can't even afford to provide you a cubicle in an office, you're also expected to use your own computer, work during weekend, and pay for your own fast 25Mb+ line ... no mention about salary but you can guess it's on par with grilling burgers at mcdonalds.

this is a new low for photography, skills like image reviewing or  photo editing are basically considered worthless even by the top tier photo agencies like SS.

ha!!! finally the reason is out for why old contributors suddenly forget how to WB, do poor lighting, etc
and as one of our stalwarts here keep saying how her works get rejections for wrong WB for sunset, and the other for off focus / focus is not where it should be .
i am so happy to know it is not that we all get to lose it and forgot how to use our camera. even when we get half-blind i am sure we , like those great jazz musicians, could do a better job with our eyes close.
lastly i would say to ss, ... hey, are you sure your reviewers got their monitors properly calibrated???

especially that super wunderkin(s) who give(s) the most regular rejections (see ss forum for that).

A few things:

1) Raw vegetable was one of the trending items.

but

2) Look at the most popular again. Some of the top 15 are the same shots, three years later. I thought all the top photos got push off the front pages?

No I don't think I have any sliced vegetables isolated on white. I did do a pumpkin once. (not that way, stop it) Isolated on white...  ;)

3) 150,000? When is enough = enough?

just wondering... what is the most oversupplied isolated item??? animal veg mineral ...
prophylactic included  ;D

it's threads like this and experts like that which behooves me ...
like the ones asking for contributors increment of earning when the Balance Sheet of the agency
praise themself at the AGM. we all cheer the poster asking for more money to us,
and yet comes in some strange person giving minuses to such an idea.
same like the one who comes in to keep siding atilla.
you wonder why a contributor would go for slicing our throats instead of cheering for all as a team.
no wonder the BS (balance sheet) (b*llshit)(BallockS) persist
creating millionaires while contributors eat scraps off the table

Well, thanks for removing the part where you said I adhere to fallacies, since I have not once endorsed any particular fallacy and in fact disagree with a number of the theories you mention.

I was taking issue with your belief that to be dissatisfied with current falling earnings automatically means you are not successful.  I believe I have demonstrated that to be a fallacy.

We can all voice and discuss opinions, and none of them should be dismissed as fallacies until proven to be so.  Otherwise they are just theories, and one person's is as good as another until either proven or discredited.

Sorry mate.  You are not in a position to know that.  Many of those you say are to blame for falling sales have made and probably still make more in micro then you do or ever will.

Their success is the reason they are in a better position to notice and understand changing trends.

Therefore, I'm stating again that: it will be foolish for SS to demote good photos, made by older contributors, only to promote crap from newcomers.
This will only make the customers unhappy and incentivise them to look elsewhere for better photos.

from an agency standpoint like many parasite businesses with a huge turnaround of employees like telemarketing , fast food, chain stores,etc... the point of profit is about low pay to employees .
making customers unhappy is not the issue, as customers go with whatever you sell much like the current trend to sell pictures made with mobs, ... even the papers promote readers to send in pictures to have your glory moment of seeing your snapshot published.
promote crap is subjective. paying new contributors vs older contributors also increase the bottom line in a P&L or Balance Sheet to please shareholders at AGM.
to say what you say is all conspiracy is total dreamworld mentality...

as PixelBytes said, you are entitled to your own opinion, but it is not farfetcehd and it is not a conspiracy theory that sales of older contributors are down.

1245
Why get mad? The guy doesn't - yet - know how to do it. That's not your problem, it's his.  And if someone produces bad images and sites accept them, that's not the supplier's fault, it's the agency's.  Istock's dropped its bar so low because it wants all this stuff. If someone asks for help and you don't feel like helping, why not just ignore it?

bravo, well said BT.
i recall a long time ago, a lad named Yuri Arcurs and a lass named Lise Gagnon
the latter resume reveals how she walked into a used camera store to buy her first camera. haven't a clue what to do with it, but she wanted to be a stock photographer.
and today we all know who they are??? Lise is even more the nicest person to speak with
as a newbie, as she is always so encouraging to anyone who wants to be as great as she is.
fine lady.
no need to say any more...

oly OM system, sony, ... are all excellent mirrorless.  it is not as easy to use straight off as the dslr as you have to get used to the dark screen at times, as it is mirrorless . but it is similar to the old days of using a nikon and a leica. both great cameras both depending much on the painter knowing his tools as oppose to whether this is better than the other. they are all good.
mirrorless has one added advantage in that it looks like a PNS, so candid shots are easier as people don't think you are a cough cough profeeessional with a big babooka of the newest toy.
in fact, i find passersby and locals are more natural when you point a mirrorless at them than your dslr.
also, it tickles me when i have some amateur dude comes up next to me with his super duper canon and shoots off his xxx fps to show me this is the camera for pros , dude ... if you want to capture the best shots lol.
honestly, as i said, i like the mirrorless for this reason. it is safer too, as the muggers will pass you over as your camera is not worth stealing. all in all very good reasons to use it for travelling.
with sony panasonic and leica producing mirrorless lenses, they are truly hard to beat. i won't go into the other attractive new usage like 8000th of a sec,etc it's for you to discover to your own delight.
i rented one of these goodie and i know that will be my next camera once my nik dies.

1247
most perfect nighttime shots are actually taken at the blue moment which is really still not black night .
then a second shot is taken when the lights are all turned on and the two shots are combined.
this way, you will not have noise problems.
needless to say, yes, ISO is as low as necessary and tripod as the camera is not to be shifted.
wifi is easiest for this without touching the camera or lens. manual focus not forget. all manual.

1248
why not just light the objects properly, then use layers in PS replace backgroundcolor to white.

The new contributors bump is fact, if the search were not broken I could provide links where shutterstock states that they do give bumps to new ports for a unspecified period of time.  In 2004 or 2005 Jon mentioned that it was a in the order of months (not specified).

I think that is fair for new contributors who do not have large ports and are starting out.  It gives them the chance to have their images noticed.

However now we have contributors from IS with very large ports and large amounts of experience joining shutterstock. These are not new images, they are images that have been for sale on other sites for many years, in some cases since IS was founded in 2000. In other words 15 years.

In this case an extended bump in sales is not fair and it would not be equitable to give these contributors the same months long bump inexperienced newbies with tiny ports receive.

absolutamundo...en agreement here with you gbalex big time!!!
as i said there is a honeymoon carrot period for beginners
to boost their saliva
or kindly said to help them learn the ropes.
++++ but not  allow honeymoon to those mentioned by gbalex
good point good point

Its a pity it was mentioned on the latest 'popular posts' email just sent out.

Yes - that list is automatically created by the activity each thread gets.

iow, like all things on the web, numbers mean nothing. eg. on youtube, the fake ones all have the most clicks. 301 , the magic number for the super fakes.
as a web dummy, i now learn that the hacker knows how to boost the numbers of clicks... so never believe in popular. as again, the most popular on youtube ... kim karda.what her name, justin..whathisnamer, paris...,... gaga.., and every thing that is talk show and aftershow.

hard to believe the whole world wants to know about them.
