I think the more important question right now is "How can I make my work stand out?".

I got a similar invitation.
Its always nice to make extra money, but I would be helping other contributors get better and that can cut into my sales in the future. Decisions, decisions. Ill probably sign up just to see what kind of questions they have. 128

I think everyone's number will be similar. Most are somewhere between .60 -.70.
You'll get a better variance with RPI. 129

Very good. BME on FT/AS. 2nd BME on SS made possible by some large last day sales.

Turns out to be an Adblock issue. You're seeing that gray screen because it's interacting badly with your adblocker, so if a buyer is using adblock, they'll get stuck. They said they're looking into fixing the issue.

The design is actually a bit of a downgrade visually. Whe you strip contrast and make everything white, its not design anymore, its about following trends.
By removing lines between rows and the contrast between header and body, the mind has to work harder to distinguish everything. Maybe it looks slightly more modern, but its harder to use than before. And removing text from tab items? Like everyone knows what an icon means. Again, the mind has to work harder to figure things out. Good design make things easier for the user, not harder. 132

I've contacted their support team with the issue. It looks like they're doing some kind of test and it's causing an overlay that covers the whole screen.

The ranking algorithm between FT and AS is slightly different. If you do a search on both sites, the results are different. I can see where FT can perform better than AS and vise versa.
I havent done enough research to how big the differences are, but I do know that some of my images rank higher on AS than FT. All that means is that for other contributors, their images ranker lower on AS compared to FT for the same search terms. I can admit that some contributors may not perform as well on AS compared to FT. 135
Adobe Stock / Re: Dead, dead, dead« on: August 15, 2018, 02:00 »For most people I think SS still leads despite the gloom, capping, manipulation, near bankruptcy, incompetence and downright dastardliness. That's not been my experience. I only make about 3% of my monthly stock earnings from FT/AS. There's definitely more potential on SS. My estimate is very rough, but I think SS gets at least 8-12x the total number of downloads across its entire portfolio compared to FT/AS on any given day. For bigger contributors, the ceiling is higher, but the competition is tougher. Older contributors also have an advantage over newer ones. I think smaller and/or newer contributors can really make some noise on FT/AS. There's less competition and if you have the right type of portfolio, it can really thrive there. 136

AS/FT is the one of the best agencies out there. Comparatively, it's easier to make money on FT than any other agency. If you can't make it here, you won't make it anywhere.

General Stock Discussion / Re: I'm very upset today.« on: August 08, 2018, 22:56 »
I've only contact another contributor once and it wasn't a disaster. He download some image from a pirate website that was "free" and he flipped it and sold it as his own. He removed it after a few messages of me lightly threaten to report him (after 2 weeks of back and forth).
The other 5-6 times where they had multiple thefts, I just reported them and got their entire portfolio taken down. It's not a good idea to contact another contributor if they stole or copied your work. If you report them afterwards, they know it's you. If you don't, you're probably not going to like their response and you're going to walk away angry.I probably won't contact another contributor again if they steal my work. It's too much of a headache. As for copies, sometimes there's little you can do. They borrowed the idea, but they didn't steal your work, so it's a bit of a gray area. There are times where you can report them, but most of the time, the agencies won't do anything about it. 140
General Stock Discussion / Re: Is Shutterstock replacing iStock as the agency everyone loves to hate?« on: July 10, 2018, 10:57 »
SS haven't changed in years so the hate stems from mainly competition. I don't see any reason to hate SS since they haven't been reducing contributor royalties. They've been consistent if anything else. Sure, you can say they've been accepting everything and flooding the market with new images, but that's the nature of any market. It will continue to grow and you just have to find a market for yourself.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Could it be using a shutterstock controlled revenue system?« on: June 21, 2018, 17:30 »
There are only 100 image in the first page of every search result and in some categories, there are over 100,000 images fighting to get on that page. If you're not in the first few pages, you're pretty much invisible.
There is no controlled system and if there is one, it's the same algorithm that controls everything. Everyone face the same visibility struggles and if your work is not up there with the best of them, it's impossible to get on page 1. 142
Shutterstock.com / Re: It's taking longer than usual to process your files...« on: June 10, 2018, 01:41 »
Some of my files that got lost in the upload appears a day or two later. They must have made a charge couple weeks ago to prevent you from keep uploading the same files.
For such a big site with so much money, they sure suck at engineering their uploader. Instead of fixing this issue, which had been around for years, they charged their once amazing submit screen into the awful submit screen we have today. 143

Not because of how good it is, but how dedicated the contributor is. This is passion in its purest form. I have no choice but to admire it.He just sets a 3D model and a camera with an helicoidal movement around it. Yeah, he probably exported each frame with the same keyword set in the metadata and did a mass FTP upload. I'm just shocked that SS didn't reject anything. 144

General Stock Discussion / Re: Do higher resolution images sell better?« on: April 26, 2018, 12:38 »
Most buyers are buying photos to use on websites, blogs, social media and news outlets. If the photo is at 1200x800, theyre happy. For websites heroes, anything that can be cropped to about 2400 width, its usable.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Most Popular Tab is gone back to Relevant« on: April 16, 2018, 15:03 »SS stopped the algorithm testing a while ago and everything went back to normal in March. I check the search and everything is normal. Popular shows popular images like it always did. Did I miss something? In absolute terms yes but I think the percentage of quality files has reduced as there is no doubt in my mind that inspection standards are much more lenient. To be honest I'm surprised that my sales have (so far) held as well as they have. What I have noticed is a shift in the nature of what I'm selling so I'm trying to react to that. It would be interesting to know a buyer's perspective on the search engine from what I've seen it returns way too many similars or "near identicals" Sales are holding up because your images are probably high on the search results. The people uploading new image have a mountain to climb in order to make it to the first page. I've seen my superior images (to something I did earlier) struggle to climb, while images entrenched in the first page sell like hotcakes. It's no secret that the search results favor good content that's been there for years. That's why I'm not too worried about the new contributors... not only do they need amazing work and incredibly keywording, they still have to make that climb to the first page. Based on my own sales and the download habits of my design team (we have a SS subscription account), they sometimes download 1 or 2 similars. A few weeks back, a buyer download every images from a small set. 149

With so many new images added every week, growing sales is no easy feat. This is the reality we live in and doing our best is the only thing we can do. And I disagree that the quality has gone down... the quality is getting better and better, thats why its so hard to grow sales. 150

March has been great so far. If things keep moving at this pace, I may have a new BME...but I probably won't. |
