New Sites - General / Re: GraphicStock.com?

There does seem to be a risk of killing the goose that lays the golden egg.  The egg might not be that golden anymore but I still don't want that goose to die :)  Unfortunately, there's always going to be people that are overly influenced by a lump of cash.  Hopefully this site will go nowhere.  It doesn't look attractive to buyers at the moment, I hope it stays that way.

It does seem incredible.  I'd like to know what percentage of "Self-Hosted" is Symbiostock sites?

I had 5 uploads vanish.  I uploaded my smallest files first, as I thought something might go wrong.  Don't think I'll bother with anymore, I'll wait and see if anyone gets some sales with them.

Had my first sale today.  A bit of a surprise, as I've not done much with my site.  Hopefully this will inspire me to do some more work.

can you share some details with us? like where is he/she from? how he/she ended up on your site? any talk before purchase?
It was another MSG'er and Symbiostock site owner.  I don't really expect to get many buyers until I've uploaded more of my portfolio and done some more work on my site.  It was nice to break my duck though.

I thought SS had a lock in period now?  Perhaps that doesn't apply to video clips?  Going non-exclusive and back to exclusive in 3 weeks can't be much fun.  At least it will shorten the Pond5 queue :)

The upload procedure need some work.  If you want a lot of content, you'll need to set up FTP and make the process the least time consuming possible.  Automatically read the title and keywords, it takes too long to copy and past all of them.  Some sites let us just upload and the rest is automated or we just have one or two clicks and hundreds of images will go to review.  That's the way to get us to upload all our portfolios.

I just uploaded one clip with the Photojpeg codec.  If that isn't acceptable, I wont bother uploading video clips.  Not sure about the amount we make for video clips, a buyer would have to use a HD clip several times for me to make the same I make with the other sites I use.

I posted in the thread that the levels are a big disincentive to upload but they seem to think it will be quite easy to get 25 downloads.  If they do as well as some other sites that are late to the party, it will be impossible for me.  Much more likely that almost all of my clips will be on level zero and that's not making me want to upload my portfolio.  It's a shame that they don't take much notice of contributors feedback.  I'd like them to do well with video but they would have to at least start paying us as much as Pond5 until there were regular sales or it really doesn't seem worth the effort.

I'm uploading clips to 5 sites but it's only Pond5 and SS that get most of them because it takes a lot of time to upload.  DT are now 6th on my list, almost beyond the back burner :)

Could you give us a rough idea of how much we would make on average if a video clip or image was used?

Hopefully I'll be doing a lot of work on my site over the winter months.  Got a chunk of my best images uploaded but still a lot to do.  I'll bookmark this thread and do a links page when I get some time.

Name of Site  Sharpstockimages
URL  http://sharpstockimages.com/
Owner/Artist/Photographer  Stephen Rees
A varied collection of my stock images.  Business concepts, British landscapes, wildlife, backgrounds, isolated objects and backgrounds.

They are in the Yaymicro 3rd party scheme.  I think I'll leave them to handle the tax forms for now.  I can't remember when they started the partnership with them.  Not had any sales through them yet.  I'll only get 50% of the commission but it's a good way to see if they sell anything without having to upload my portfolio.  Seems like a good excuse to leave my Yaymicro referral link.  I've made nothing from my 3 referrals so far but I live in hope :)

For them to have a hope of catching up with the other sites, they need our clips.  They should pay a flat 50% for the first 2 years.  If they get buyers, then they can change that.  I'll probably only upload a few clips.  Not worth it if they end up paying 25% for the first download.

1263
Thanks for that info.  That rules me out until they have a simple tax form in English.

True enough but I have to decided if I want to spend more time shooting or loading and keywording
You could try just uploading to Pond5 and raise your prices a bit.  I see people selling for nice prices there and with the 50% commission, it should make up for less sales than you were getting with istock.  I put everything on Pond5 first because they sell so much better than the other sites for me.  The slow review time is a pain but the sales make up for it.  My video portfolio isn't great, I'm sure any serious contributor can do very well there.

I think the unrealistic RC levels with BigStock is as bad a mistake as some of the ones made by istock.  Until that happened, I thought SS had got most things right but that one mistake has changed my opinion.  All they had to do was match the BigStock subs commissions to what we get with SS.  Why not extend the bridge scheme to everyone?  That would of stopped me ever considering uploading to istock to get in to the PP.  Now, it feels like it's a waste of time boycotting istock because it looks like there really isn't a big microstock site that is going to do anything decent for their contributors.  The only motivation to keep supplying microstock sites is if I can carry on earning at least as much as I am now but they're making it almost impossible.

Still slow for me.  Only one small SOD this month.  No El's.  I'm selling a lot of old images but hardly anything I've uploaded in the last 12 months.  Used to get lots of downloads of new images but they seem to mostly vanish now.  The images that used to be my best sellers aren't on my first page now.  Haven't sold a video clip in the last 10 weeks.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Size of Licensing Market

@PaulieWalnuts

I think the opportunity is beyond just building a site. The next big thing will be a disruptive change in licensing and distribution.

Care to elaborate on this point? What do you mean by this? I don't know. I mean Thomas Hawk has argued that individual licensing could be huge: http://petapixel.com/2012/10/22/the-next-big-thing-in-the-photo-world-is-individual-licensing/

No one here seems to agree though?

I was interested in Stipple when it first started.  Getty Connect is another one to look at.  Quite a different way of making money from images.  The problem is, I haven't seen anyone mention they make any money with Stipple.  There must be a better way to make money from images than microstock but so far nobody has found it.  There's a huge market for free images but how can we make money from that?  So if you want a project, perhaps finding a way to make a Stipple type model to work for stock contributors would be a good idea?  I'm not sure it's possible but it's better than wasting time on yet another microstock site.

s BIG, guess that is all you need to know, you better ask yourself how much size you can/want to get?

Seems like there's a fair number of you here who think it's actually a good idea, just one that's hard to pull off and would take a long time to succeed, in a crowded space. If Dreamstime did it, it took them years, but they're fairly big now. I'm not sure why it's different now.
I don't know how many new sites have failed to make contributors any money in the past 5 years.  It must be hundreds.  Most of them didn't understand why they couldn't do it either.  It seems blindingly obvious to me.  I used to support every new site that came along but that was a big waste of time.  Now they have to have something genuinely different to offer.  Your idea has already failed for other sites, do some research on ClusterShot for one example.

1271
....From indies pov, another strategy would be for the SS lovers to stick there, hoping that they can take over the market enough to raise sub prices to a more reasonable level.
A nice idea but too many people are going to upload to istock to make it work.  They don't care that there's no chance of getting to $0.38 or that Getty can do deals like the Google one whenever they want.

I think SS is losing interest in subs.  It's turning in to more of a pay per download site.  There's a lot of competition with subs sites now and none of them have the kahounas to raise prices and commissions.  Pay per download is different, it looks like there's still a higher end market to fight over.

@cuppacoffee

I'm thinking of starting the company. I wanted to hear people's feedback. What do you think of the idea? It's not a get-rich scheme. It would be a long-term open platform for people to sell their work, and make a fair price.
I haven't had a rejection with Pond5 yet.  They let me set my own prices.  They sell lots of video clips but hardly any stills.  Anyone can start their own symbiostock site and upload whatever they want and set their own prices.  There's been several sites that have accepted everything I've uploaded, let me set my own prices and have sold very little or nothing at all.

So you want to start something that's already available?  You need a lot more than that.  Starting a site now is like burning money.  Come up with some better ideas and you might be on to something but this doesn't look like it has a chance to me.

1273
Such a shame that TS has so many buyers.  I hope they know that it's hard for us to get our images on that site and we have to put up with whatever Getty decide to do with our images.  I really don't want to have to upload to istock to get on to TS.  Not sure if I'd rather give up on microstock than to have to do things like that to make money.

Just tried it with my 1TB HD and it works fine.  It takes SD cards and USB sticks up to 64GB.

By LCV I mean the sort of images that will get zero downloads over a long period of time.  The sites aren't great at defining what LCV is but if you look through MostPhotos, there's lots of it there.  I don't mind one site like that but I wouldn't want more.  I think istock moving in that direction is yet another big mistake.
