That means I was hacked? I mentioned it many months ago in one of the Pinterest threads and then later in different Pinterest thread (I think). I can't even check my history to pinpoint it but I'm sure people remember it happening. It was a little after lagereek lost his account. The second time, I deleted it myself because you had deleted my posts and since my questions never were answered about the first deletion, I assumed it was you who deleted my account.
From memory, I remember just before I was deleted or the last time I was signed in before being deleted, my screen froze and I had to reboot. I'm assuming someone else logged in with my name at that point and kicked me out? I came back to the site to read but I didn't log in. I didn't notice my account was gone till after a day or two, when Sean and maybe Cathy asked what happened to me.
If my account was hacked and deleted, is it safe to merge them? There are actually three under grafix04 that need merging. Is that possible? To be honest, I'm a little paranoid signing into this site since it happened and have beefed up my security on my PC.
Who knows.. something strange happened. If it wasn't you and it wasn't me then it has to be a bug or a hack... neither which seem that likely either. If you want to get a hold of me, you should email me at [email protected] or send me a PM on this site. Putting a post in the thread can easily be missed. I prefer not to merge accounts and it means I have to dive into the database and there is always a risk of screwing things up. Perhaps we'll just leave things as they are. Let me know if you have any more problems (.. and contact me in a PM or email.. not a thread)

yes it very hard to do a poll regarding this matter, too many options, will try to add a few more, thanks for all replies and votes!
leaf: please re-arrange poll order (indies options and then exclusives) because I am afraid of messing up the current entries, thanks!
I can't reorder the questions without messing up the answers.

Luis and Oliver, the guys from analytics site Stock Performer have created a nice little video with interviews of microstockers. Check it out below.
The other little news bit is they are running a small contest where you can win an entire year of Stock Performer usage. Details on their website

I haven't read what everone else has written and it's probably just as well so you can have another opinion instead of just me agreeing with someone else's opinion.
I'd go with the any of the first four images. Pick one from the man series (I feel the first one is the best).. his arm is a little bright in the second one.
The girl with the fish is OK but but looks much more like a family pic snapshot. The lighting on the models face isn't great and the rod really breaks up the composition.
The Tennis shot was a decent concept and image but I'd straighten the image and get the hand out of the top. It is just distracting and serves no purpose. The space where the hand is, should be saved for copy space for the buyer.
The woman on white is OK, but is just more cliche stock than the others (like handshakes and goldfish).. so I think the other images would have a better chance at impressing the reviewers.
The patio looks like a snapshot again. It looks like you walked outside on your patio and clicked the shutter at regular standing height (the way most snapshots are taken). The best way to make things NOT look like a snapshot is take them from any other position than standing position. Architecture shots are usually taken from a height around your waist (doorknob height) and make sure the image is completely horizontal and vertical. It looks like a flash went off and overexposed the railing and made the deck bright in the foreground and is a bit dark in the background.

The most specific you can get is latin names with species. And I have sold quite a few pictures from searches for latin names. I have seen many falsely labelled in other portefolios. Compares to place the Golden gate bridge in Antarctica. But then again, microstock is the pop of the pop, and I can see pictures of purple and green monarch butterflies also sell.
I think that if you appear trustworthy in your naming and describing of the pictures, customers will return to you for a second pick, next time they need a specific species or a well described location. Which is why, I never make purple monarchs, though it would be so easy.
but first they have to find you to trust you. I don't think I'd ever mis-label a scientific name. If they are searching that specific then they know what they are after. It is the broad (unknowledgeable) searches I'm not wanting to miss.

I've had quite a few instances where agencies have emailed me asking about the specifics of a photo - often to do with location. I took some images on the prairies and they were in Saskatchewan, but Montana, parts of Alberta, Manitoba, North Dakota all look exactly the same - especially at a distance. I have often included other prairie provinces / states in the keywords. Perhaps that was wrong?? But as I said customers do ask when the need to confirm that the image is indeed from Saskatchewan and I am also careful to keep the title and description as accurate as possible (informing / educating the buyer)

Thanks
I take it I won't get any kind of royalties from it ? Not really that bothered as it certainly adds weight to my portfolio.
Not any more than your $0.38 from Shutterstock no. Unless they needed to buy an extended license that is, then you should see $28

What I am thinking about is if you use keywords that you know people will search for but are technically wrong.
A tomato is technically a fruit.. does that mean you should leave out the keyword vegetable? In reality it seems like spam to use the keyword fruit as buyers will most likely be searching for vegetable and tomato if the image is of a tomato you eat. How about if you have a shot of a Mule, would you use the keyword Donkey? They aren't the same animal. Or if you had a spider, would you keyword it with insect? How about shooting a heifer, would you keyword with cow? A heifer isn't a cow
My philosophy has been that I need to keyword so the buyers can find what they are looking for. I would guess that a number of buyers searching for donkeys would be quite happy with an image of a mule, or perhaps they are actually looking for a mule but don't know the difference. Someone looking for a female bovine species may just do a broad search for cow .. if you left out that word on an image of heifer, you'd loose out on a sale... when really they just want bovine animals, not necessarily cows.
Anyhow, what are your thoughts?

I changed the subject of the thread.
Please create subjects that explain what the question or thread is about. If every question thread was titled simply as 'question' it would be impossible to navigate the forum.

I live in Canada. The shipping will probably make my wallet beg for mercy.

Yeas, get some alien bees. They are very cheap for their quality, the perfect mix for Microstock really. I don't think you'd want to bother with less quality gear than this. You'll just end up having to replace it at a later time. Save up for a single strobe if that's all you can afford. Sjlocke uses these strobes, so yes they are good enough. A reflector is another cheap versatile must have.

I do the keywording in Photoshop (although I do use LR to start). The key thing is to try and keyword as generically as possible - so don't use CV terms like "Front or Back Yard", but garden, yard; dont' use "Residential Structure" but house, home - keyword like people talk and buyers search. Some sites don't support multi-word keywords, but i always include them. I generally upload to SS first and their spell check is useful to catch any mistakes I've made (I wish Photoshop included spell check; it's not like they haven't been asked). Include plurals or alternate spellings where you think it's appropriate.
To keep track of what's been uploaded, I have folders for each site. I put aliases (shortcuts if you're on the PC) of the JPEGs into each and use FTP to upload from there. I don't have enough volume to feel I need any of the uploading/distribution tools
To get over the spell checker I use the other little tool I made, the microstock comparison toolWhen keywording there are a few things I always have problems for and needed something to solve those problems quickly -Spelling errors -duplicate keywords -going over the 50 KW limit Spelling errors are taken care of by firefox by highlighting them, then duplicate keywords are automatically removed and the keywords are counted so I don't go over the limit. It's also handy if you have a base set of keywords that you want to use for all images in a set and then add extra specific keywords for certain images. [/MSG commercial]

I use the microstock keyword tool to help find keywords then individually add them to images in Adobe Bridge. I also add the description and title in bridge (or sometimes Photoshop)
Uploading I do with Microstock Submitter
I love how Microstock Submitter keeps the data in the photos and not in a separate database! It's generally a very useful piece of software for Independents highly recommended!
yeah, that is a nice features and it allows you to move the images around without messing things up.

I see! I'm glad this crossed my mind, I was about to upload a lot of pictures...and most of them are not very very special I suppose.
I've all but stopped uploading for the year and will resume again in Jan / Feb when sales are generally pretty good again.
Oh, so sales are bad in January too?
You can see the spikes and drops of my income in this blog post http://blog.microstockgroup.com/6-years-of-microstock-income-graphed/

There is often a nice little spike in the next week or so (usually one of the highest in the year) but between christmas and new years and a few days before sales are almost 0. I've all but stopped uploading for the year and will resume again in Jan / Feb when sales are generally pretty good again.
It depends on what you are uploading though. If you are uploading stuff that has a very niche subject and your images are some of the only ones available anyhow then upload whenever you want, it won't make much difference. If you are uploading business men, flowers or hand shakes, you might want to wait a little.
