Thanks for keeping this thread professional and useful everyone.  It is appreciated.

On a side note, I have removed 4 posts that were discussing a member on iStock in a rather negative tone.  Let's keep the conversation about iStock and not individual contributors.
One other member has also been banned (again).. you can probably guess who... banned because they were banned before and for not wanting to be here but posting anyway.

What advantage does it have over a common FTP program.

New users to the forum have non-active links.  That's the way it is.

The first time I submitted my tax form (2009) it was approved within a week.  I had to recently resubmit the form (you apparently have to renew it every 3 years on Fotolia) and it has been sitting there for now close to 3 weeks.   Has anyone has a tax form approved recently?  How long did it take?

welcome here.

I did a longish blog post on the subject a couple years ago.  A few of the numbers have changed but the concept and how things work is still the same.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Food Shots on MS Companies
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:18 »
A good number of posts were removed from the thread - essentially criticizing the original poster for asking a question.

Take it easy guys!  The point of a forum is to learn and ask questions.  No question should be too elementary or basic.  If you don't like the question, move along to another thread.  We all have to start somewhere.

you could also try focus stacking.

Lots of food photography is done with a tilt shift lens so the focus plane can be kept very small but yet include a large percentage of the image or food item.

In English it says featured as well. Perhaps it is a case of poor translation?  Either way they should /need to get that fixed.

General Stock Discussion / Re: PicturEngine: Some thoughts
« on: December 07, 2012, 09:43 »
it appears that buyers & sellers are being told 2 different things - sellers are told we can direct the search to our preferred site or agency, but buyers are told " Image buyers get the best image at the best price with access to all outlets from which the image can be licensed."

here are extracts from the PE website :

=======================
picturengine to buyers:

Search, find and license images.  Its that simple!  The world's stock photos consolidated into ONE search!  Some images are exclusive to a single stock photo agency, some are listed with multiple agencies and some are available directly from the photographer.  Image buyers get the best image at the best price with access to all outlets from which the image can be licensed.

....,.
The option to choose not only which image to license, but also from whom to license it, assures images buyers the best image at the best price.  We include all representatives licensing a particular image and allow the image buyer to make an informed purchasing decision.

Once you find and image, we show you all available sources to license that image

Does PicturEngine compare prices?

Last Updated: Aug 17, 2012 10:58AM CDT

NO.  PicturEngine does NOT compare prices.

We know buyers demand good prices.  The only way to get the best price on ANY good or service, is to reduce the distance from the producer to the buyer.  We DO NOT compare prices, instead we send the buyer to the base agency (where the image was uploaded FIRST) or directly to the photographer (if they are on the PicturEngine platform).  Sending the buyer directly to the base agency or photographer, effectively removes unnecessary expenses added to the sale.  Our goal is to help both photographers and image buyers get the most out of each transaction.

Am I competing with my agencies?

Last Updated: May 05, 2012 10:34PM CDT

No.  If an image is listed with an agency, and the photographer lists the same image on the PicturEngine platform, buyers see only the image listed by the photographer on the PicturEngine platform.

If you're going to quote someone you need to link to the original source.  Where are you getting this from?

Ok, this is getting confusing with 2 threads.  I'm locking this thread so we can keep everything together.  Further conversation can go in this thread

thanks for the info, but it seems this only affects the .affiliate accounts, not contributors who happen to sign up new referrals, as this is done via a different site essentially, the submit.shutterstock site.

So this doesn't seem to affect most of us, just those who don't contribute at all and want to do purely affiliate marketing.

Unless I'm reading it wrong.

agreed, this paragraph makes it fairly clear about that... hopefully.

I've started a page of microstock acronyms

Anyone have anything to add?

You can also get to it by going up to Tools > Microstock Acronyms

thanks rob.  I had an excel spreadsheet coded when I was gunning for to emerald.. cringing every day worrying that they would move the goal posts just before I graduated to emerald (like they did once).  Now that I reached emerald I don't even both to follow the rankings there as it'll be forever before I reach the next level.  For those getting close however, it should be useful and save a few excel formulas.

Another problem with the current search is if a buyer searches for running, they won't get anything shorter, like words with just the keyword run.  Or if they search for cars, they won't get images with car.

I hired a custom coder to fix up the search on my site so it catches common word endings.  It still isn't perfect but a bit better.  The coder was also very surprised that the keywords tables wasn't indexed... perhaps there is a reason..

I will not buy any equipment for 2013! Now that is going to be a hard goal since I love to spend at the camera store...

You'll probably be a lot further ahead in the end if you invest in shoots instead of gear.

Buying the Pentax 645D!

Ohhh. I likes. I have dreamt of medium format a while too but never put it at the top of my investment priority list.
