My twitter feed is chock full of people advising other people how not to fail at everything - largely because they themselves discovered early on they were useless at everything and it was easier to make money pointing other people in the (not necessarily) right direction. Guaranteed to wind me up but I attract them with targeted hash tags so I can in turn pimp my snaps to them.

I can see the old retail loss leader sales hook at work here with OLD being the operative word. This is the equivalent of my local supermarket proffering free bits of cheese and pineapple on a stick or slices of stale pork pie on a plate as a means of drumming up more business. Rubbish.

"Exciting News" usually means I have to put on my wellington boots and grab a shovel and wade through a festering swamp of BS to discover which bit (if any) is exciting and for whom. All whilst keeping an eye out for the metaphorical crocodiles trying to eat my income as well as my arse.

Off Topic / Improving Stock Photography Concepts

This might cheer a few of us up. Man photobombs stock photos....In actual fact, the "bombed" images are pretty good concepts in themselves.

There isn't going to be a revolution, neither will there be a mass deletion day and SS are not going to change their minds and hand Rex features their business back.

Not dying, just not anywhere near competing on % annual growth with the rest of the top 4.

As for the site revamp, I neither like it or dislike it, which is probably even worse.

I predict Laurin will ask SS for a raise in 2015. Oh, you already have.

They made her look like Shrek's sister.

I'm all for a raise* and I don't need to be convinced that SS can afford it. Problem is, any raise would no doubt beget demands for another and another and the cost would ultimately be met by the buyers not the shareholders. Whoever heard of a shareholder agreeing to a lower dividend just to keep suppliers/buyers or employees happy? Given that, I'd be interested to hear from anyone how an agency might reset buyer expectations in a market we helped the agencies create.

*At the very least a level or two above .38 cents to strive for.

I wouldn't worry about it - DT regularly competes with IS to win the trophy for Slowest Review Team on Earth.

In defense of IS though, at least they understand that an image containing some of the same elements or props is not similar if the concept is different. DT can't seem to grasp that and are the poorer for it.

Been that way for most months since January 2014 for me

General Stock Discussion / Re: How many downloads per month?
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:12 »
Well you can look at successful ports on some agencies and arrive at a largely inaccurate number based on total downloads over time.

But at this stage your focus should be on putting up quality work as often as possible whilst doing the legwork yourself on the market and the business. This isn't an easy way to make money if that's what you're thinking - but you can make money. Unfortunately you now have serious, focused and motivated competition and the learning curve is vertical*

* But that's what makes it so much fun for many of us

163
I predict that I will be none the wiser after reading all the predictions.

Personally, I can only act on my own successes and failures since everything else is outside of my control. Also, the only information I have that I can guarantee has been doggedly accumulated and is authentic and accurate is on my laptop. We have very little to go on since the agencies (probably for competitive reasons) are extremely stingy and poorly organised when it comes to providing their contributors with any data or trends or customer feedback that will help us make business decisions....I predict that won't change.

As for resolutions, I plan to diversify more fully this year and join the footage brigade and will also work harder to improve my limited success in illustration by learning Adobe.

164
I wish other buyers were as informative and forthcoming with their buying habits and needs. Who knows - we might be able to work together to grow the business at agencies were the owners clearly have no idea.

Thank you. Useful stuff.

What were the predictions for 2014 and did any of those come to fruition?

Substantial YOY growth but then again I finally decided to pull my finger out in mid 2013 and up the work rate/mix the content.

Yet to do a full analysis - thanks to my GF's secret recipe "punch" served at New Year my head still feels like a tub full of hot lard.... and someone is pulling on my eyeballs with tiny grappling hooks

Three items that seem to have fallen out of their luggage in their rush to catch the gravy train:

1) Serving the Customer
2) Nurturing the Supplier
3) Trusting the Product

You could probably say that about the many western companies presently being eaten alive by Asian, African and South American entrepreneurs.

Had a batch accepted within half an hour yesterday. Not many people uploading I suppose. Some say uploading at this time of year is BAD - but I still believe that what overrides when.

171
I've contacted all three of my buyers but they are on holiday in North Korea and have no internet access.

Nice gesture though.

172
Personally, I've got nothing for you or for anyone else coming into this business (or any other business in fact) with no clue whatsoever and hoping someone will provide them with a short cut to success. The competition is too fierce these days to mitigate such generosity. Harsh but there it is.

But their language has always been strangely Sovietesque - like trying to understand Kremlin reports of factory machine parts output during the Brezhnev era :)

Subscribe For Victory!

You're right though. Anyway, maybe I'm thick but I lost sight of their strategy a long time ago. If they think this will do much harm to Shutterstock they ought to read Moby Dick and find out what happened to the Pequod.

Shutterstock.com / Re: What's the best day to upload to SS?
« on: December 15, 2014, 13:55 »
I upload almost every day on the basis I have no idea what the best day is and if I throw enough crap  out there someone is bound to buy some of it. Like throwing mackerel to performing seals.

175
I take everyone's claims - poor, spectacular or otherwise, with a pinch of salt and take action on the numbers I see in front of me.
