Pond5 has quality control. FAA/Pixels does not.
Imagine all of the "great" stock a buyer will have to sort through when rank amateurs who have been rejected from the micros start putting up photos of their feet and those amazing window seat airplane shots.

My impression of DT is that they have an IT department that needs things to keep themselves busy. So they come up with "cool" new features like sorting the stock by camera model.
Like what customer gives a #%% about that? Did a customer ask for it? Have they ever talked to their customers?

I don't think this is out of desperation. The company is run very efficiently with something like 3 people. Unlike places like CafePress who are having trouble supporting hundreds.

The real value in FAA is in not the same old stock photos everyone else sells. Its the real artwork that has potential to sell on products. And these are not "one off" deals. When you decide to bring out a line of products based on an artist, it requires negotiations over multiple products.
This is why there are agencies that deal specifically with art licensing.

Forgot a couple
To pay for screeners to make sure our work is displayed with similar quality? no To pay for screeners to double check our work for potential problems such as trademarks and copyrights? no

So why exactly are we handing over 40%?

I'll be looking for the exit very shortly. I don't have a lot of images with istock and haven't been uploading to them for at least six months.
The other day I found one of my images on a magazine cover. I look at my earnings on istock and nothing is over a buck and change. A cover on a magazine doesn't rate more than that?
I have a ticket into support but they've already come back with "sorry for the long wait....what was the question again?"

I wondered about that. Haven't had any rejections and Alamy has been getting my edgier rejects from other RM areas.

At what point do these agencies realize that they have enough images and start looking more closely at getting rid of the trash? At least DT has a policy to cull non-sellers after four years.
They can't keep growing at millions upon millions of images. At someone the buyers just can't find anything.

Thing that bothers me is the assignments they run. Although fun for the contributors it seems to me it has people creating RM quality work for RF.

DT told us for years that there was no market for video. Not only do they offer low royalties but they seem to only accept very specific codecs. I tried experimenting with uploading a clip I have on Pond 5 and SS and it didn't work.
Sad thing is they'll get contributors. Too many people these days are willing to work for nothing more than "likes". How does someone feed themselves in a economy based on "likes" once their parents kick them out of the house?

It was so long ago. Wish I could remember the exact method but basically you get the code from FAA under "Behind the scenes" and then "marketing" and then "shopping cart widgets"
...
I was getting used regular sales several times a week. Seemed like I was on gravy train. Now the train is stopped in the station.
BTW - It takes a lot of time, outside marketing and a good amount of quality images to get the ball rolling. Catch 22 is that sales get you higher in the search. You can't rely on FAA to do any marketing for you. People who just post 20 images and sit back and wait for buyers to magically find them are disappointed.

Sales of late seem to have slowed down but I did have 14 sales this month. Some $5 phone cases, some $40 prints.
No doubt Nov and Dec are their biggest months with holiday sales.

After three years or so on DT and over 2,000 images - I saw my sales drop considerably after dropping exclusivity. At least my files have "matured" with time and downloads to that the RPI (other than subs) is actually rather nice. Been seeing 5, 6, 10, 20 credit downloads lately.
Sites like Deposit Photos and Fotolia on the other hand seem to only sell subs.

I tried uploading videos to DT to test the waters and they were considered "invalid" format. These were the same ones that were accepted no problem by Pond5 and SS. I don't think DT knows what its doing with video. They said for years that there was no market for video and now they are trying to play catch up.

They were one of the first with the technology, unfortunately they didn't want to negatively impact their film divisions. That the problem with large dinosaurs. Unable to move quickly, too many internal forces working against change.

The problem with self hosting is .... where are the buyers? The point of giving away a large chunk of sales to the agencies is because they have the buyers.
Same reason when I sell via my Amazon account they nab 15%. Because they bring the buyers.

Consider that print will dwindle and the demand will be for web sized images and you can understand the dismal future.
Buyers barely need to consider quality when they are serving up 1 inch images with text plastered over it.

You don't have to build it from the ground up but it helps to know a few things. Like how easy it is to buy a hard drive and install it yourself - about two minutes.
Or how to order the machine so you don't to throw out memory to add more. On my new machine I priced out a few things and it turned out cheaper for me to add a second SSD drive myself that have it on the configured machine. Also ordered it with less memory then I eventually want but on a single SIMM so three slots are open.

I saw one of these characters down in Florida at a Flea Market. He sits around all day surrounded by a stack of self published books trying to get someone to buy one. (maybe sleeps there too).

Note the computer equipment sans monitor was about $1200. Same with Apple probably be $5000 (ok maybe I exaggerate)

My Christmas present to myself was a image processing beast. Tired of hearing my older computer complain about heavy use of the the CPU by OnOne Perfect Effects 8 and Photoshop.
After comparing Dell and the HP I went for HP. SSD drives to run operating system and apps. Photos stored on external drives. I also got a Asus factory calibrated 24 IPS monitor.
HP ENVY 810qe
• Windows 8.1 64 • 4th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 processor quad-core [3.4GHz, 8MB Shared Cache] • 4GB Nvidia GeForce GT640 [DX11,DVI,DP,HDMI & VGA via adapter] • 8GB DDR3-1600MHz [1 DIMM ]
SLOTS OPEN FOR ADDING MORE RAM
• 128GB Solid state drive • No Secondary HDD
I GOT A 250 GB SSD CHEAPER OFF OF AMAZON THEN HP WOULD HAVE CHARGED.
• Microsoft Office Trial • Security software trial • Blu-ray Reader & SuperMulti DVD burner • 15-in-1 Multi-slot Media Card Reader, 4 USB Ports (Front/Top), Audio [Front 2USB2.0, Top 2USB3.0] • No TV Tuner Card • Integrated Sound, Envy Audio; Beats Audio • HP USB Keyboard and USB Optical Mouse • HP WLAN 802.11 b/g/n Bluetooth(R)(1x1) • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

At some point you'll just have to do your own research and start figuring things out. Asking for too many shortcuts from people who have invested a lot of time and effort learning the ins and out is just going to tick people off.
All the sites have FAQs and there are a couple of books on Amazon that explain everything about the industry for under $20.
