Wow, Lisa, well done

The magnitude of this loss; heck yeah!  Maybe three threads

Cameras / Lenses / Re: I love my RS-4 Camera strap
« on: March 10, 2011, 18:50 »
I agree 100%; if you have never used a RS-4 you are missing the boat; complete change in the way straps are made and the way they work.

For 30 years, my chest and shoulders have been beat to heck by poor camera straps; now carrying a camera is so easy, even with a long tele

Newbie Discussion / Re: Future Business- Tax Concerns

I have been self-employed for 25 years, first 20 as scientist and last five as photographer.  I have used my home as business place and deducted it in the past; I have taken many trips and deducted them; just be fair and reasonable, have documentation for everything and you will have little problems.  A visit by IRS is not end of world, just stressful; provided you have been honest.

123RF / Re: 123RF Serves Termination Notice to Pixmac
« on: March 10, 2011, 17:19 »
I, for one, appreciate that someone has come forward and admitted something wrong was done, it was Pixmac fault and they are willing to own the responsibility for this error.  I got really tired of the "smokin mirror" routine by Zager saying it was a misunderstanding.  "Bullsh*t"

I have made plenty of mistakes in my life; I plan to make a few more.  When I make a mistake, I am honest and admit my mistake and take ownership of that mistake and attempt to make it right.  I don't hide behind legal-mumble-jumble saying I can not comment because of pending legal problems.  The truth will come out, admitting the truth will not hurt any legal case.  You want our images; then show us the respect and stop the "smokin mirrors" routine.  I am willing to trust someone that will be transparent; even if they have made mistakes in the past.  I assume you are human, I expect you to muck-up once in-a-while or have an employee that mucks up.

Remember, these images are our life-blood; they are how we feed ourselves and our family.  If someone steals them, we have lost everything.

To be honest, I tried to get some in but was unable to find the portal to extra uploads.  I tried deepmeta, lightburner and ftp; all failed to show up in my area.

The seasoned self preserving stock pros here who have commented have clearly given off the "Leave it to the big boys and go away and play with your dolls" vibe.

Oh, that was just Rinder spouting off, he was having a bad day or needed a martini, or something;  if  you read his entire post, it is pretty spot on-microstock is a professional business; there are lots of folks that just want to sell a few images to impress their family or friends.

I don't see a problem with the casual user; if my stuff is good enough, it will rise to the top soon enough.  Hopefully I have not starved to death by the time it starts to rise so I can enjoy some of the monetary rewards; if not, then my children will enjoy the rewards of my hard work :o

Then again, I am in a pretty specialized field; not to many casual snappers out here in Tiger country (Far East Russia);  now if the SS reviewers will just understand the lighting is not always perfect in the wild I will be happy.  They want studio lighting out here in the naked outdoors; I am lucky to see an animal once a week, much less have it in perfect light.

put in your photos with CRE and see how well you fare. They are very strict on their photo selections...

heard alot of complaints about Crestock, no problems with their reviews, running at 100%

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: March 10, 2011, 02:41 »
Well, this isn't a buyer bailing, but it sure is a frustrated buyer: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=312262&page=1

to have the largest size checked...in the hopes that someone will make that mistake and resign themselves to the fact that they effed up

Actually, this is a marketing ploy, marketing 101; at fast food restaurants they teach the cashiers
If a customer orders a coke and does not say the size; you ask them "large?", you don't ask them "what size?".  Granted, at IS they are not asking, they have the box checked and expect the buyer to make another choice.

Micromanaging?

More like sledgehammers wielded by the new team who've 'gone native' very quickly.

And what on earth does this mean :- "Perhaps, I'll get enough honest feedback that I will reopen the thread."

I was writing her a sitemail to ask what 'dishonest' feedback may be but didn't bother sending it as having seeen her implementation of changes to the weekly pimping thread she will obviously do what she has in mind regardless of any feedback, 'honest' or otherwise.
There is an old proverb in my country:
"Give a nightstick to a peasant and he is going to think he is a policeman and has to hit somebody"

Good thing you are not from St. Petersburg, Florida (my former and future home).  In St. Pete, "Give a cop a gun and he is going to shoot someone"

Fotolia has been really slow with payments this year. Wonder if it's official policy now.
I didn't receive mine for Feb yet, but I can wait - maybe the stupid Canadian dollar will go down finally... the US/CAD conversion rate is killing me!
Would be fine if prices here would go down too, but they are still higher than in US! Ok I am veering off topic here....

Be happy Elena, the US Dollar to Ruble is not so great either; also off topic

Or in other words - It walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck but to keep the french happy lets call it a cow.

+1  COW ;D  (Mooooo-Qwack)

"French Fries"; "French Toast"

It is possible the French will win a few battles but ultimately; they will lose the war.  In the process, the RF sites will have even more reason to cut our fees just to claim they need money to fight these court battles.

Tom

we really are a pretty good group of people; but our humor and interpersonal relationship skills set is lacking.

seriously, you are entering a mature market filled with many talented photographers; if you want to be among the group-you will need to achieve similar results, especially for the application

When IS introduced the last paycut just a few months ago, I restarted submitting to nearly all (very) minor microstock sites which I abandoned long ago due to lack of sales. Well, now my total % from those sites -excluding the top and middle tiers - is 2%. Not much, but it was 0% before. And it's going slightly up each month, while IS is going slightly down.

Yes, things can happen. And lightburner is making those things easier.

Agreed; starting to get small sales from minor sites and hoping for the eventual shift of customers to one of these partners

Thanks; sometimes it seems more a nightmare but it is one of my choosing; so i guess I can always wake up if I don't like the dream/nightmare

« on: March 08, 2011, 22:14 »
need more details, is this a translucent box with lights directed from outside or is this a white box (cardboard or foamboard) with bounced light from front.  What are you shooting, it is still life, if still, why is flourscent not enough?
