I sell all types of things in FT.  My best-seller is an illustration:

I don't do illustration's....I don't even know how...lol...of course I don't have photoshop either which proubably helps with that doesn't it? I'm stuck with Nikon Capture NX

For me nothing at all. I have no clue what sells there or what they want. Rejection reasons are very mystical, so I don't read them any more. There is also no way to see what images were rejected, at least not for me. I get a cryptic rejection site mail with an image number, not even a thumb or a title.

I agree Flemish...that's why I'm trying to figure them out. Everyone talks about having good sales there.

Looking at my (not too many) sold files, it's a wide variety of pictures. The most pictures sold were with people, followed by nature shots including animals and landscapes. Some isolations are there too, as I don't have many to start with.

My best seller is a shot of canned goods....which now they proubably wouldn't even except because they'd say copyright issues. My people shots I save for the macro stock sites although I may try a few more than what I already have there. As for landscapes they reject mine saying they already have to many...go figure on that one.

I have one photo that sells continually and more than any other at FT
It's a very very simple image but I'm not going to show it.

Best sellers get copied all the time ( please note donding I'm not referring to you or suggesting that you would)
Maybe that's why we see so often in forums " Show me your Best Seller"

takestock I was just wondering what Type of photo sells not what it is. Believe me I wouldn't do something like that and I'm sure you didn't mean it that way.  ;D

The other point I'd like to make is where are the additional customers coming from? Are they bering lured over from other sites that pay more? Are you getting more income from Fotolia but less from elsewhere? Will this trend increase as Fotolia captures more market share? Will other sites have to reduce commissions to stay competitive?

I wonder the same thing also, but I don't do well at Fotolia but I do well at all the other Big 6 so I'm not really seeing the business being shifted over to Fotolia, not yet anyway. I really believe the are hanging themselves with all the rejection's. If they really want the market share I'd think they'd allow themselves to be more open to new ideas. It seems that everyone is doing microstock any more and it will only increase as time goes on and also trends do change. What is a hot ticket today may not be so hot next year so that's what I mean by open to new ideas and not the same ol same ol. You gotta have the inventory to have the sales. I'm not saying they should accept everything out there but for good quality stock photo's that they reject for having no commercial value but do sell on other sites is really kinda stupid on their part in my opinion.

What is your experience with the best TYPE of photo you have sold on Fotolia. I'm curious to know what has been doing well for everyone.

Good point Zeus...I guess what gets me is that not only are the companies feeling this punch from our current economical condition but so are the contributors...proubably more so than the big comapnies because we are just the little fish swiming in the shark infested waters.

Why do you assume that fotolia are hurting financially?

Isn't that the reason they gave for cutting commision's? They weren't making enough to do the marketing? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

Well let's do it in dollars and cents....I made a total of:
March   $1.50 for 4 sales
Febuary $2.08 for 6 sales
January $1.29 for 2 sales
December $2.64 for 2 sales
Hmmm....wonder where all the money is going....I don't make much at all with Fotolia and never have but all the rest of them I do...
I was looking at some of your portfolio's and there are some of you that have great looking one's but as for number of downloads...it doesn't show much...maybe it's their search engine.....or is it that they have totally different type of buyers
Also I think Fotolia wouldn't be hurting so much financially if they'd open their eyes up and really look at their rejections and realize to make money in this business you gotta have inventory just like in any successful retail industry. I really think they need to take some business courses so they learn how to run a successful business.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Automatic rejections for newbees?
« on: April 07, 2009, 09:54 »
Microstock is nothing like your traditional photography. What they look for is the type of photos they can use for advertising and the like. They like alot of isolated images. Don't get to frustrated by the whole process because as many of those here on the forum have been down the same road and one could easily get discouraged. I can't tell you how many times I was ready to give up because of those initial rejections to the Big 6, but I didn't give up. If you submit to the smaller less picky sites don't expect big sales because they don't produce much as far as income is concerned at least they don't for me. They don't have the buyers like the bigger agencies do therefore they don't have the traffic. As far as iStock is concerned they do like a variety of images and they are one of the more pickier sites in alot of ways. Good luck.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Keywords - I feel a rant coming on
« on: April 07, 2009, 09:38 »
My personally thoughts are she is a young woman as well as a child. Sometimes iStock gets funny about their keywords. A while back I had some rejects for the keyword pepper when the shot was of green peppers and as it sounds like the same thing happened to you...they accepted some of them that were keyworded exactly the same way as the one that was rejected.

Mine are just flapping in the wind also...they use to be pretty quick...I'm just thankful I got as many uploaded there as I did before they got so picky...I just joined in the last two weeks and have already been having sales so I hate to see them end up like you know who...:)

Sorry to say "GUYS" but it's hard to offend me...lol...unless you're Fotolia. And no you didn't offend me "Whitechild".
Someone on Fotolia pointed out some problems with some of them..although they weren't rejected because of that..but they said if I had a laptop computor...which I have ...to turn the monitor as far back as I could and I would notice some stray area's of isolation. I only saw it on one of them, but what he said I think is a good tip....so from now on I'll angle my monitor back when I get done isolating to make sure it is looking right.
I've already pretty much decided to leave Fotolia. I know I won't be uploading to them any more. My photos sell on the other Big 6 whereas Fotolia doesn't do me any good but waste my time.

I've decided that I don't need the frustration.....I think I have to wait 90 days to delete the photos that were recently accepted..so in 90 days I'm gonna ask for what they owe me and close the account...Maybe I'll get lucky and I'll sell ONE or TWO more pictures in the mean time.......lol....I really doubt it.

Photo Critique / Re: Is this any good?
« on: April 05, 2009, 12:29 »
It's not a bad photo but, I agree with most of the rest of them..the background is way to busy for the focus to be on the subject...it also bothers me that the bottom of the cup is cropped out and the slant of the photos also bothers me. It looks like it needs to be straightened. I don't know if you can salvage it or not..personally I'd try reshooting it with more focus on the foreground and shooting at a straighter angle. Also watch for all that activity in the background.Good Luck.

Thanks to all for the good advice....and thank you "whitechild" for standing up for me.
Donding - how well are these selling at the sites that accepted them?
The last two were uploaded to all the other sites in September of 2008...The longhorn which is the last one has sold 18 times...I agree with you all on it...I was surprised it has sold that much because out of all of them I feel it is the worst image.
As for the 5th image, the spray paint gun..it was also uploaded in September of 2008 and it has sold 32 times.
The first three just got on the site they are on and pending on the rest of them. The monkey was just uploaded at the end of the month last month. It was taken the same time all the other animal shots were taken.
I was wondering how do you take a shot of a animal..especially wild animals with out traveling to Africa..in a zoo without it looking like they did?? There was one of two Zebra's that was taken the same time as the other ones and Fotolia accepted it.

Tell me your honest opinion on these photos..

These 1st three are still pending on all other stock sites except this one where they were accepted.

These were all rejected by Fotolia...can you see the reason why??

That one made me smile...lol....I withdrew my photos from Crestock within the first month I joined...Fotolia is getting as bad or worse than Crestock and is ending up with the same bad reputation. Fotolia is going to ring it's own neck just like Crestock.  You know what's kinda funny about it all...with the economy the way it is you'd thik they would want to increase their data base.

Yeah they are similiar and different also..I don't think it was meant to be a copy. I personally don't go online to see what is there and what isn't there when I have an idea for a photo. I take it...do the editing..keywording...then post it..

I'm not new to the stock agencies...I've been doing this since 2007..I'm currently on 11 microstock sites including fotolia and two macro stock sites so this isn't new to me...They are the only stock agency that I constantly get rejections from...always 1 or 2 make it through but not the best ones. I've just about decided I'm going to remove myself from their site..they aren't worth the effort of uploading. I think I have to wait 90 days since the last upload. Out of the 15 two were accepted. I'm still waiting on a review of my images and some real reason's from Fotolia forum...so far no response by any one, not even other photographers.

Sorry for replying to my own post so much but I think I figured out how to post the images..at least I hope!!

This one sells all the time on the other big stock agencies

ok I'll stop..there is quite a variety of different type of shots so I don't quite understand their rejections.

Believe whoever is reviewing these images would possibly be harmed very badly...honestly I'd delete my account if I didn't have unpaid cash on there and it's sitting at $47.00. I don't know if you close your account rather they would go ahead and give what they owe you or not...knowing those jerks proubably not..but you know what it is rightfully mine and I don't care what it cost me I'd be taking them to court for it!!!
I'm still trying to figure out how to get the pictures posted on here...any help would be appreciated...  ???

« on: April 04, 2009, 17:33 »
I just posted on the Fotolia forum and hopefully they won't kick me out of there, but I am so totally sick of these rejects. I am beginning to wonder...and so are other members...if there isn't certain photographers that they favor.. depending on their rank on that rediculous rating system. Of course when they reject everything that is being sold on the other big 6 and approving what is sometimes rejected by all of the other ones...of course your rank isn't going to be very high. I use to get almost everything accepted..and I might mention I am much better now than I was two years ago...but now they might accept one or two out of 15. I can't figure out the reason why..."Type of photograph"..any way look at these and tell me what you think.
