Dissolve / Re: Dissolve lowering price on my footage
« on: March 06, 2018, 15:01 »
I'm not on Dissolve, but I'm trying to imaging the resources they're spending on this initiative. One, or possibly several, people... cross referencing every clip and every author... to see which items need their price changed. I'm sure they could spend that time and money on something more useful!

Totally agree. It shows they're not truly professional if they resort to this kind of tactic

Agree that Dissolve chose the wrong strategy. They seemed to have penalized contributors that are with Storyblocks. If you have content with SB they'll drop your clips to $49, the same price they an be purchased on SB. The difference in commission is $44.8 from SB compared to $14.7 from Dissolve. That was never going to go down well with contributors. I still get sales from them but haven't added to my collection for a few years, why should I, they don't offer any incentive and don't really have a valid explanation for their strategy. Since many contributors would avoid them for this reason, I'd imagine their collection is tiny compared to P5/SS and probably smaller than SB.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: I am Quiting motion elements
« on: February 19, 2018, 03:09 »
I am surprised someone made an actual sale at Motion Elements

How accurate is SS reporting? Is it possible they don't report all sales?

181
I am currently crying. I've had zero sales today.

How many GB of files were you trying to upload?

Probably close to 2TB, which would take a year to upload on my NZ connection

Maybe uploading when you get back home?

New Zealand is way too slow for that.

I found the solution. My first hotel was a dud but the second had very fast wifi, as did my third and final super budget hotel. By default any Hong Kong accommodation should have very quick internet but it's not something you can know until you check in. Therefore until you get to know a goto hotel for subsequent visits, it's just trial and error. After 10 days and round the clock uploading, I got all my work done.

Alamy.com / Re: Success stories on Alamy - the $100,000+ club
« on: January 28, 2018, 01:07 »
When I went non-exclusive nearly three years ago I started to upload to Alamy with some enthusiasm.  However I found sales very slow and the upload process tedious.  After about a year I gave up and considered the effort not worth it.  If it is indeed possible to make reasonable money at Alamy perhaps I should try again, but I must admit I am feeling somewhat reluctant.

Alamy is a grind to say the least. The only way to do well is to be very astute with what you upload. Too many contributors are uploading LCV images and way too many similars. Check out the portfolios of the 100k club, they are the masters.

I've always found the gross total that Alamy and the forum under 'how was your month' to be both misleading and deluded. Evey other agency I know of present figures in net amount.

Last year I had a BYE on Alamy which was surprising and welcome. Despite my BYE being worse than my WYE at Getty RM (not Istock), I'm now uploading to Alamy and not Getty, since there are a lot of things not to like about Getty, first and foremost their need for total exclusivity, meaning you lose all control of your photos.

Overall Alamy is a good agency. They should get real and present in NET figures, plus cull millions of similar's and obviously bad photos. Otherwise it looks too much like a dumping ground for any photographer instead of the best editorial agency in the business.

See: http://www.microstockgroup.com/software/crushftp-ftp-in-the-cloud/msg505287/

Thanks, I'll certainly look into this, sounds promising. I also appreciate the other replies too. FTP files while sleeping may be is obvious but still good advice. My first hotel has such slow uploading I gave up. Found a cafe with fast internet but don't want to spend too much time in a cafe. So I guess the real question is how can you make sure your budget hotel has super fast internet before booking. I'd suggest it's pot luck and just to book for a couple of days. Move if it's slow and hope the next one is better. In KL and Singapore I found and stick to budget accommodation with fast internet I know of.

Software / Re: CrushFTP - FTP in the cloud
« on: January 25, 2018, 17:57 »
Hi,

I've seen a couple of posts from artists asking how to distribute their files with a slow internet etc. and I though I'd share my system.

I am not affiliated with 'CrushFTP' in any way. I just use it.

CrushFTP - http://www.crushftp.com/ is a cloud based ftp application. It runs on almost any operating system. I have it installed on a $5 per month CentOS 6 i386 droplet from Vultr: https://www.vultr.com

You can create a 'User Watch Folder' that has a script to distribute all files in that folder to each agencie's ftp. Upload your files once to CrushFTP and it will do the rest.

If you are uncomfortable setting the software up on a cloud server the people at CrushFTP will install it for you for a small fee ($50).

I upload a 4K video file once and then automatically distribute it to all agencies with no problems.

'hope that helps.

« on: January 24, 2018, 08:17 »
I'm sure this is difficult for all travel videographers. I could keep up when it was HD files but with 4K it's hard to stay up to date.

I have found KL and Singapore to be good places for fast uploading. Now I'm in Hong Kong for the first time with a substantial amount of 4K to upload. So far the speeds I've encountered aren't great. Anyone have any suggestions? I understand if this is a closely guarded secret as it seems to be one of the more challenging aspects of the job.

Canon need to go into damage control and up their game very quickly because Sony, Panasonic and others are moving in on their market share big time

« on: November 12, 2017, 02:02 »
I see ZERO improvement. If anything it's a step backwards since it would've wasted a lot of money to develop. Where is the ability to choose footage thumbnails which all other agencies have? (actually Fotolia don't either)  What was the point in the one on one sessions with certain contributors two years ago if you didn't take anything on board that they said could improve things.

In terms of upload and submission of footage my ranking is

1st VB
2nd FOTOLIA
3rd P5
distant 4th SS

hello, i wanna put my 100.000 stock portfolio on shutterstock but i have no clue how to handle this. The keywords are included but I really dont can categorize each picture and the upload whould take weeks :/

There are no shortcuts. Stock is a graft game. It will take you several months or even years of hard work.

One more question about the Alamy payment - my cleared balance got back to 0 (they promised to pay on July 3). However the money is not on my Paypal yet - does it take a while to appear on the Paypal?
Thank you

Just be patient, it will arrive, it make take as long as at least another week. I just forget about it because it always arrives.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Getting payed for comments?
« on: June 24, 2017, 19:20 »
There is a group of people in this forum, who comment every topic every blessed day. Why would anybody spent this much time for nothing, especially those who continuously talk about their dropping sales.

Let them have their fun, and while they are spending time on the forum they aren't creating competing content, which is good for the rest of us

Interestingly, I know of NO photographer who spends 24 hours a day creating imagery.  And I know of no photographer whose life does not involve other elements that satisfy their inherent need/want for other self fulfilling stimulus.  Just saying.

Well said, I agree

I just had a sale clear a few days ago that was from April 2016! May have been the same buyer.

If you want an honest comparison to your work, type in 'plane taking off at airport' into Shutterstock search and look at the clips that come up. Compare your clips to the best clips of the first page of your search. That is your competition, so unless you can match that standard or do better, probably not worth uploading. You have to be honest with your work and compare it to the best. These clips should never have passed QC.

198
If youre going to lie, learn how to lie better. If you exaggerate to an acceptable amount, people will believe you. If you exaggerate to an impossible amount, then people can laugh with you.

With contributors like Raw Pixel and African Studio, 35,000 is easily achievable.

I would have thought 35,000 +/- 5000 was an obvious piss take, (the same as my best ever day $25 from 2500 which I pretended to be chuffed about). When I was asked the inevitable probing 'wow, what are you shooting' question I was going to answer 'monarch butterflies'. Of course the gullible people out there would have just started shooting and uploading millions of monarch butterfly photos in anticipation of downloads and $.

199
Don't be righteous and think your way is the only way and everything else is wrong.

I really don't think there's a massive argument for lying being an acceptable alternative option. If it was a joke, then making stuff up isn't so bad, but the basis of the joke would be that people have visibility of your stats, which we don't. As a result, there's no reason for anybody not to take your statement at face value.

You can't just 'make stuff up'! How about this example...

Your stats show that you got 10 extended licenses in one week, totalling $5,000, plus your normal sales:

Pkphotos: Hey, my stats said I'd got $5K in EL's but I've just got my payment and they're nowhere to be seen.
SS Support: Yeah, we made it up! We were just having some fun with you.
Pkphotos: Well that's ridiculous, you can't do that! You're purposefully lying... you wouldn't catch me lying.
SS Support: Don't be righteous and think your way is the only way and everything else is wrong.
Pkphotos: Now you put it that way... you're right, I have seen the error of my ways! Haha SS, you guys are great!

A far fetched example and waste of your time coming up with and typing out that scenario. Obviously a forum where people are exchanging ideas cannot be compared to a company reporting financial results. I'd call that being very straight laced and melodramatic.

You call it lying, I call it taking to piss out of the thread. Humour is allowed on the forum I think.

Here is how this kind of thread works -
Q: How many downloads do you get a month
Q: Wow that's impressive how much does that equal in $ per month?
Q: Wow, what are you shooting? (So I can look it up, copy it and flood the market, instead of coming up with my own ideas).

If you think everyone on this forum posts 100% accurate financial information you may want to ask yourself if you really think that's the case.

200
I made a typo, I meant 35000 +/- 34800

People are too obsessed with figures on this forum. Any shrewd contributor having good success would keep that info to themselves and talk about everything apart from finances.
But you've made the most explicit posts about your income in the past as evidenced by the quote catching you out in your lie. Far more precise than the approximate numbers everyone else has given.

I was just having a laugh with overly earnest contributors who are infatuated with finances. You shoot yourself in the foot if you share all of your info.

Your actions have just devalued all of your posts - past, present and future.  It hurts this forum when people can't be trusted. Rather than posting mis-information you should have either stayed out or posted 'none of your business'.

The majority of my posts are sincere. No need to be so earnest. Telling people 'it's none of your business' may be your way of communicating, others like to have a little fun. Don't be righteous and think your way is the only way and everything else is wrong.
