Are you sure they are exclusive or is it that their images are in signature collection. I'm only saying as if you were once an exclusive, even when you leave you're files still stay in the signature collection.

I've just been approved as a video contributor (last week) although they did take over a month to reply to my request. I haven't uploaded anything yet (due to time) but they seem very helpful and reply quickly to emails.

They wanted to see how I create my csv files just so things would run along smoothly.

They seem a nice friendly agency.

Thanks for all the responses. As were all creatives it's hard to do the numbers at the end of the year. I know I personally could write down loads more things but I can't or won't as I'm not sure of the system, I find it pretty confusing to be honest.

Qwerty you're probably right, I think I should get an accountant to take a look. I don't even take in account car costs and with my Holiday question I could probably save 1000's each year.

Thanks guys...

Thanks Space for a quick response. Yeah I wouldn't take the pi** I'm just wondering like the house for example. I have a study which I solely use for stock, I have 10 rooms in the house so I divide and subtract all bills by 1/10th against my tax (I think that's right).
Just wondering if you can do the same for holidays some how? There's 5 of us in the family so If I'm out shooting most mornings can I divide the holiday into 1/5th and subtract that?

I know it's a thin line but wondering whats possible?
Nooooooooo don't don't don't divide the bills by 10. Divide by 10 and multiply by .95. And no you don't use the study just for work. It is your spare bedroom or movie room that you almost entirely use for work. Unless uou want to get into all sorts of mess with the tax man, mostly when you come to sell your house.

Ha ha ha! OMG I'd never set anything against our mortgage. I'm talking about household bills only. Heating, Electricity and Fibre Broadband.

205
The OP should research the tax rules in his country when it comes to deducting travel/vacation expenses.  In the US it is fairly clear.
From what I've read from the inland revenue there is no info on this. Thats why I'm asking if anyone else has done it from the UK? Suppose it's like a working holiday? I'll phone them up and get an answer and post the response on here so anyone else in a similar position will know what to do...

OK so I've never done this yet but I've been thinking of it for a while.
When we go on our family annual holiday (normally abroad) I always take my video gear and can shoot up to 500 vids in 2 weeks. (I know it's my holiday time but I'm one of those sad people that just love filming) We normally drive over to France so I can lug around all my kit in the car. My wife and kids are really supportive and take star roles in most of my clips. I love getting up early and investigating the new landscape. Anyway.......
If I'm "working" whilst on holiday, can I put down any expenses against my annual income tax (I'm in the UK)
Has anyone ever done this?
Thanks for any advise

I only do video and I have been around a bit more than a year, portfolio of about 1,100, in the main 5 agencies.
Things for me were going quite well and steadily up until May, when Pond 5 started their membership hell.
After that my sales at P5 disappeared, basically they are giving away very good quality clips almost for free. Also they pushed up in the search engine the members who participated to the thing, so everyone else like me disappeared in the bottom of the ocean.
Little by little sales at other agencies started to drift down as well. Most of the video sales at the moment are in that stupid membership thing and it is getting worse and worse.
I have doubled my portfolio in the last 3 months, but sales are not improving at all.
This membership thing at Pond 5 in my opinion has killed the video market in only a few months.
I really think from now on I will start concentrating on other things and only consider video footage as a spare time hobby that gives me a tiny income. Things were much more promising before the bloody Pond 5 membership started

I feel sorry for you but Pond5 is not the sole market provider. I don't really submit there. I'm mainly on Shutter, and Getty. I have a port of over 5000 vids and making a full time living out of it.
Honestly I'd move on from Pond5 and focus on stronger agencies. Also content is Number 1.
I can't compete with a lot of videographers making extremely professional business shots etc so I've taken a look around me and filmed whats to my disposal. I've found gaps in the market and having great success. It's taken me a while but instead of rushing out and just filming anything that took my fancy I'm now beginning to think what production houses may want. It's difficult I know but once I found a theme I kind of sort of got it.

Don't give up - invest in the bigger agencies.

209
I still get these mixed up. RM (Rights Managed) is for stills and RR (Rights Ready) is for video.

Good luck with it! Sounds like you're investing heavy!

210
Yes RM / RR and RF are 2 completely different contracts. RR on Getty is only series exclusive so if you've filmed a penguin doing a backflip on a diving board, then all of the clips from the same shoot need to be exclusive.

Is it worth while... well that's the million dollar question. To go RR the content needs to be great, not only in technique but also the subject matter. Is it unique? It's got to be something special that not many production houses can buy else where. That's why they are paying way more money for it.

I maybe wrong but I'm pretty sure Getty has the biggest RM / RR library.

211
Holy Cow! Where . are u getting you're hands on all that weed? Is it legal? I'd be worried the police would be knocking at my door :)

212
Sounds like you want to go more into the RM / RR market. RR Getty contract springs to mind, although you will need to be series exclusive. If the content is good enough they have the selling power to make it worth while.

Getty sales have just come in this morning. Still coming in as we speak. A video sale normally brings in around $120 royalty. I think they sell them for around $500+ although you can get a lot smaller royalties too.

My guess is that they are Getty sales? Have you ever been exclusive with them?

Sony FS700 + Odyssey 7Q recorder (RAW 4k)
Panasonic GH4
DJI Ronin
Pilotfly Gimbal
DJI Phantom 3 4K
GoPro Hero 3 Black
Canon 5DmkII
Canon 1DX
Dynamic Perception Motorized Slider with Pan & Tilt
Lots of Lenses, tripods, heads

Hi Forrest - I basically have the same setup as you minus a few dslr's and gimbal.
Do you use the ronin gimbal with the fs700? I'm looking to get one but not sure if the camera is too heavy or long? Where do you place the Odyssey? On the gimbal handles?

I have a motorized slider with a motorized pan and tilt head. Works great with the Fs700 especially in slow motion. I don't use it half as much as I should though as I do very little studio shots and find recording in slow mo perfect for stable hand camera sliding movements.

- back to the question I'd suggest purchasing a proper video camera (not dslr) and invest in a great zoom lens but also having some primes. Also get a video cam with inbuilt ND filters like the fs700. It's so good to have it with a flick of a switch. Massive time saver and perfect for outdoor filming.

regarding the audio I think they are migrating all the files over to Getty so might have something to do with that?

I don't want to make a big deal on this but here you go...

I can't believe anyone would regard anything the Daily Muddle (also the thieves who used one of my RM files over 20 times more than they reported/paid for it after being caught out many times for same in the past) says as remotely accurate. I was just going out to buy eggs when I read this, so here are the eggs I just bought:

The eggs are sold in sixes and twelves, by small, medium, large, XL sizes, battery, barn or free range. 'Twere ever thus.

That's great but where the word Dozen? Or Half Dozen?

so people in the uk are anry because they cant buy a 100w bulb or eggs by the dozen and send a whole country down the hole. i understand what the eu has done for the people in the eu, yes you probably will have to suck up not being able to buy a 5000 watt vacuum cleaner, but voting to leave was silly, to say the least
Just look on amazon uk and there are 100w bulbs for sale.  I have seen them in the high street shops as well.  There was never a time when we couldn't buy eggs by the dozen.  For some reason, the EU gets blamed for everything.

Have a look at eggs next time you're in the shop. It's now by weight and not by the dozen. It's all the small things that begin to add up that grate on people's conscious and subconscious. It's not really about eggs or vacuum cleaners but the fact that the more control you give them the more they take away.

I don't want a European state with a European Super Army.
I believe in Democracy.
I voted out but come on eggs are sold by the dozen, sometimes 10 sold by size I've NEVER seen them sold by weight

Like I said just small things that take away our identity. I can't remember the last time I saw dozen on egg packets? Must be 5 years ago. And how British was that!

http://www.bbc.com/news/10461548

its this misinformation about basically everything  got people to vote out

Maybe the egg debate is a bad example but you can't take away the fact that they tried to impose this!
What next? No coffee before breakfast? No swimming in the sea? Not allowed to breath air?

As a Brit I'm very proud of the events that took place last night. I stayed up all night glued to the TV as all the results started to roll in. The people in the UK want change. We invented parliament and democracy in the modern age and yet the EU is the most antidemocratic system put into place. If Brussels and the EU parliament were more transparent and we could elect it's members then I think us Brits would have probably have voted to remain. The EU was initially setup for a free market but year after year they imposed new laws which didn't relate to each individual country.

Both my grandparents fought in the 2nd world wars for our freedom and democratic society. They would have been proud last night if they were both around. The EU is turning into a machine state and once again it's been up to us Brits to save the day for Europe once again. Other countries will go free soon and each country will get back it's originality and freedom.
75 year old people voting for the future of 16 17 yr olds who couldnt vote and didnt want to leave. absolute discgrace. what is eu was the most searched term on google AFTER the referendum results

That would be all the 16 -17 years old's searching then. I'm a dad of 3 young Children and I'm really happy of the decision as we will grow a stronger country for them instead of the crazy red tape we need to go through now.
It's not as if were going to be vanquished from the face of the earth. We still need Europe and Europe needs us, just not the political machine state it's turned out to be.

Think it's stupid laws like this that really got on peoples nerves from the electorates from the EU who we couldn't and didn't elect for...
We are not allowed to buy bent bananas

We are not allowed to buy 100w bulbs

We are not allowed to make and sell hovercrafts to countries were it could save peoples lives as the EU see's it not as a boat

We are not allowed to buy powerful vacuum cleaners

We can't buy eggs by the dozen (must be via weight)

And the list goes on and on and on and on and .................

The EU brought in good laws too, don't get me wrong but common!!!!! We couldn't take anymore B*llsh*t.

221
The UK imports way more than it exports so the EU will be worrying about our trade going elsewhere instead of Europe. In 10 or 20 years time our children will be thanking us for this decision. I know it will be difficult in the next 5 - 10 years but I'd prefer to be poor living in a democracy rather than rich in a dictatorship.

On the plus side with the low exchange rate I'll be making an extra 150 -200 per month!

222
With the oil industry being so fragile and unpredictable I can't ever see Scotland being independent. If it went independent 2 years ago the EU would be bailing it out today like Greece as oil prices have slumped. You can't keep an economy healthy when it's main asset is oil due to it's unpredictability. I don't think the EU will allow Scotland to be a member due to the reasons above. It's asking for trouble. The people of Scotland aren't thick too and they know this!

General Stock Discussion / Re: PRORES vs H.264 Tested
« on: June 09, 2016, 08:12 »
I was always told that h264 is a great finishing final codec for the end film but ProRes is better if you want to carry on editing and colour grading?

Pond5 is just a tiny drop in the ocean. The market is so much bigger than one small to medium sized catalogue. Pond5 needs to adapt to compete in the larger market, this is just there strategy. It doesn't change a thing unless you are one of the unfortunate people who depend on their income.
