The image infringement image is found (iStock exclusive plus image on Foap).. surprise surprise (found by a person on the istock FB board)

This site really does look like a court case ready to happen.  Do you really think the people in this 'commercial' shot are stock models?

Once again!

We contributors have to promote our portfolios on agencies where is the best deal for us...
That must be aggressive campaign!

I think YAYmicro takes the cake on the best referral program.

You get a 20% commission on all sales - forever- generated by your referrals!

Direct Referral
Direct sale is the customers who use your link or bonus code when the register at YAY. You get a 20 % commission on all sales from your referred customers - each time they buy anything at YAY, forever!

2-Tier Referral
Along with giving you a whopping 20 % commission on all direct sales, we'll also give you 5 % commission on all indirect sales, generated by people you refer! This is called 2-tier sale. You'll get an overview of all your referrals at the My Referrals page.

It is a shame Dreamstime is pushing (half) the cost of their referral program onto the photographer.  I feel this should come out of the advertising budget and not out of the contributers commission.

If Dreamstime wasn't it's contributers to advertise for them (with the referral program), they shouldn't punish those who use their links.

I posted this on Lee's blog as well.  I'll wait to see how this all pans out, but if nothing changes I don't see a point in sending photographers (or buyers) to Dreamstime through a referral link.

And.. for those sites who aren't interested in providing a referral program for those of us who advertise their site I don't see a value in providing a link at all.

I always stagger when my models arrive anyhow

LOL  ;D

?? Perhaps that isn't a common use for the word in other parts of the world? ... or just laughing at the double meaning :)

4. To arrange in alternating or overlapping time periods: staggered the nurses' shifts.

I've had that rejection a few times.  Just reupload the image with a note saying you were asked to do so.

So far I haven't worked with Hair & Makeup artists.

I had some enquires of some MUA who wanted to work with me, but it was mostly not the price that stopped me from trying but the time they need.

The last MUA I asked said she would need about 2 hours for 3-4 people to make them ready for a stock shooting. So I would not only have to pay the MUA for her work but also add 2 hours for each model which I need to pay, so the whole shooting would suddenly become much more expensive.

Yeah, it would make the shoot last a bit longer.  30 minutes per models isn't too bad though.. 15 minutes for hair and 15mins for make up.  If they knew they had to work quicker or you didn't need much done they might be able to get it done in 20.  I always stagger when my models arrive anyhow so each model would only have to arrive 30 minutes (at most) earlier which shouldn't be a problem and shouldn't cost anything (or at least not much) more.

I used a laptop for all my stock work until last year.  It just didn't have the same power my new desktop has.  The fans constantly clogged and got hot.  The 17" monitors now seem small.  etc.

I'm constantly impressed at how simple you've kept your production. Not that I agree with all the choices (I would have gone to a desktop long before) .. but still impressive.

2011
I've used a MUA, maybe 3 times.  Of course, I shoot "normal people" in "everyday situations", so it works fine for me.  I think.  I can't see adding another 2 hours, plus numerous MUAs for 10-12 people.

I was hoping you'd see this thread.

Yeah it would really depend on the shoot and how important each individual is.  In your school kids shoot for example, I can't see having a MUA as a worthwhile investment.. at least not on all the kids.  At most on a couple of the girls if you wanted something done with the hair.

I also try to shoot more 'real people' or normal looking people so natural easy makeup is good enough.. but the models did look a lot better after their hair was given a little body and style and some very non-visiable but useful make-up was applied.

Anyhow, did you consider it worthwhile for your 3 shoots?  Or have you stopped having a MUA?

I use a laptop just for surfing while in other parts of the house or while travelling.  When working at my desk anyhow, I have a desktop and wouldn't switch it out.  I have all my images on my computer for easy access which means lots of hard drives, something a laptop couldn't do.  A laptop also can't be as fast, because everything has to happen on one drive.  If you have an SSD then you are limited to hard drive space.  I have an SSD hard drive for programs so things open and run fast, and another SSD drive for caching intensive programs like photoshop and adobe bridge, then have all my other data like picture files, video on several other drives.
Like others have said, it's also much easier to upgrade one piece of the puzzle in a desktop.. and not having a large monitor would also drive me bonkers when actually trying to get some work done.

Leaf, I think it's like that all around Europe. I just remembered something, watching movies and TV shows (new ones) it looks like everybody in the states still has a landline phone and wait for it, an answering machine :o
Is it still really like that in reality? I haven't seen one of those in over 10 if not 15 years and the only one still having a phone at home is my granny, that also has a cell for 10 years or so. I just can't see the logic in someone leaving you a msg on your answering machine if you have a mobile phone and can be reached anytime anyplace. If you don't want to talk to someone you just send a sms

Yeah, I agree with you wut.. I'm sure it's the same is all (or at least most) of Europe. I was just using Norway as an example because that's what I know.

Answering machines.. haha.. yep.  Both my parents have and use an answering machine (although it's built into the phone service).  If you can't reach someone on a cell, you just send a text.

I think prices may have a big thing to do with it.  It is very very cheap (sometimes free) to own a cell in Europe, in Canada any plan will still cost you an arm and a leg.

2014
I have almost always just asked the models to come 'ready to shoot' and have generally had good to great results.  I have talked to other photographers who use MUA all the time and they wouldn't think of shooting without.  On my last shoot, I had a MUA because it was in a hair salon and the shoot 'professional' who was helping us with technical details was there anyhow so she did Make-up and hair and I was able to see first hand that it did really add to the quality of the shoot.. so I'm considering having using a MUA at least sometimes in the future.

So my question, do you have make-up and hair on set when you shoot?  Or do you just let the models do their own thing and hope for the best.

Primarily I'm looking for responses from people who already have a little bit of a production budget on their shoots.. people that are buying props, paying models and finding good locations etc.

2015
The phone culture is crazy different from country to country.  In canada lots of people don't have a cell phone and if they do, they certainly don't carry it with them all the time.  In Norway EVERYONE has a cell phone (at least one), most people under 40 don't have a regular house phone and most kids over the age of 8 have their own phone (many younger as well).. with many of those kids having a smart phone.  You wouldn't see that in Canada.... and least not where I was from.

Digital Releases
We are happy to announce that effective immediately iStock will accept model and property releases generated electronically by approved applications. This means you will be able to capture the necessary release information on an iPhone or Android app and shoot it directly to us with your upload. All digital, no paper.

There are several different digital release applications out there. We will accept Easy Release and VM Release. We strongly advise that our contributors use Easy Release. This app is available on iPhone/iPad and Android and works in all of our supported language. It contains all the information we require so you don't need to add anything.

We still require the same information about the model, as well as signatures and a witness. The difference is that you can now capture this information on a digital application.

We have prepared a FAQ page on digital releases including reference images which you can view here.

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=345451&page=1

I'm a big fan of apps and love using my phone for everything, and see the benefit of having everything electronic... but... there's something about having a piece of paper the models signs that makes me feel a little more 'protected' .. perhaps I'm just old fashioned

I always name my photos (and illustrations) with year-month-day-hour-minute-second then if you want to add something more put it at the end.  That way you can be guaranteed no two files will have the same name and overwrite eachother.

For keeping uploads organized... I have a directory for each site up upload to, then place a shortcut to each image in that directory.  When I upload the file to site X, I delete the shortcut.  That way I know which files still need to be uploaded to which site.

I like that shortcut idea.  But, why delete the shortcut?  Wouldn't that mean the file still needs to be uploaded?

ED:  PS:  Curious because I use the same naming convention except one up numbering following yyyymmdd.

The shortcuts show me which files still need to be uploaded to the site.  When I upload the file then the shortcut is deleted.  If there are no shortcuts in folder X I know that all the photos have been uploaded.

The shortcuts are actually shortcuts to folders with groups of 50 images in them... that way they are easy to move around and organize.

It is critical that you submit to Shutterstock if you want to be successful as a non-exclusive.  If you aren't already accepted as a contributor there,  I'd try and pass the test before giving up istock exclusivity.  If you don't pass, wait on giving up exclusivity until you do.

wow.. looks pretty nice.

It's hard to believe no one had even seen a touch screen device only a few years ago.

I had around 30 images on myLoupe for about 10 years and didn't see any sales.  I realize the amount of images was very low and they weren't that good either... but I decided to just close the account there.  It felt nice to prune down the number of sites I'm selling through and felt like a good time.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: K-Tools Hosting
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:59 »
If you find a good host it really isn't a problem making the move.  I just moved a number of big sites and it will take a while in terms of waiting for the transfer but transferring a big site and a small site require exactly the same steps... the length of wait is the only difference.

Just be sure to use shell access (or similar back door method) to transfer the site directly from one server to another.. don't go from Server A -> your computer -> server B

General Stock Discussion / Re: Microstock Wiki

What a pity. I found it quite helpful to track commission changes and other stuff stock agencies don't want people to remember...

Yeah, it was nice for that.  Perhaps I'll have to figure out another solution.  The files and data are still there, just sitting in the attic.  It was a pain keeping the wiki platform working and spam free.

I signed up there a while ago - haven't entered any competitions though.

You can get image briefs sent by email.

There are a lot of stock relevant briefs though.. so you could treat it a bit like the istock request forum.  Do a shoot or two to fill a brief and if your images aren't selected you can sell them as stock.
