Got a follow up email today (pasted below). Payment per view/click. Ultra-micro stock anyone?
--------------------------- Yahoo! taps into Connect by Getty Images
Dear Getty Images Contributor
We introduced our API product, Connect by Getty Images to you last week and explained that the ways customers can use Connect are as varied as customers themselves. We are thrilled to announce the soft-launch of an exciting new Connect deal between Getty Images and Yahoo! that will for the first time, create incremental revenue each time your image is viewed and clicked on a page that contains advertising. We want to explain how Yahoo! is adding value to their search platform by embedding our content, metadata and search functionality into Yahoo! search thanks to Connect, and how Getty Images and its contributors are now poised to benefit from Yahoo!s significant traffic.

Just got this email from Getty. I'm no longer a Getty contributor since I'm no longer exclusive, but they keep sending me the emails. I can't log in to see any more about the new program and I've removed the links in case the links are unique to me.
Sounds to me like they are embedding their search directly into customer specific applications so customers could search for images from within that application directly rather then through a browser.
Note the phrase I've highlighted which scares the crap out of me since any time Getty introduces a new licensing model contributor's get screwed. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Introducing Connect by Getty Images
Dear Getty Images Contributor
We wanted to be sure you know about an important and exciting new addition to our business offerings.
Connect by Getty Images is a new tool set that enables customers to use our content as part of new businesses that they are building, primarily online, where traditional license models simply do not work. The term Connect is an umbrella term for our Application Programming Interface (API) solution. This solution embeds Getty Images content, metadata and search functionality directly inside customers publishing tools, products and services, often completing the workflows that are key to our customers businesses. The number of ways customers can potentially apply this functionality is as varied as their businesses are.
Theres a lot more information and news about Connect on our Contributors Community site at xxx and in the Community Forum on the site at xxx
If you havent checked in to the Community site in a while this is a great time to do it, for updates about Connect as well as all of the latest news and image needs!
Cheers,
Getty Images Contributor Relations

Thanks for undertaking this! Great to see laid out this way. Would be helpful to see if EL can be purchased for a subscription price. Would also love to see the minimum publicly noted potential price for an EL.
I recall that PhotoDune has low priced ELs which is why I've been avoiding them. Or am I confusing them with somebody else?

I've heard it from a diamond videographer that attends video conferences or at least did, with IS HQ. He also met with IS senior staff on a few occasions. It is definitely true . I don't believe every rumour I hear, but that source is solid, he's one of the big guys, he knew KKT etc (I just remember that name from senior staff)
Fairy nuff, then.
----------------------------------------------- I can confirm this as well. They also have (or had) inspectors who just work on new applications and other types of special inspection kinds of niches. I guess it is to avoid having to train everyone on everything.

This story just does not add up for me.
Who is going to shell out a whole lot of cash for Getty and its debt? KKR? Private equity firm selling to another private equity firm for what purpose? To consolidate FT and Getty?!? That's why KKR way overpaid for FT, so they could overpay for Getty too? Does KKR have that much better insight into the microstock business to figure out how to make that much more money then H&F could?
An IPO? Investors will be lining up to buy a company with a crappy balance sheet? So they could pay down some of the debt from the IPO but really how much could they get from an IPO? Investors are going to look at what Getty was before H&F purchased them and what they are now, and say not much difference other then more debt and a weak economy.
The timing on this rumor is suspicious to me on the heels of the SS and FT announcements. What I wonder is if H&F/Getty are spreading this rumor, trying to muddy the waters in the microstock market. Maybe hoping to make it more expensive for KKR/FT to buy up other micros or to depress the value of a SS IPO? Should I take off the tinfoil hat now?

At first I thought they were wallartcanvasprints.com who is an Istock partner, but the name is obviously different. Wonder if they are under a similar deal? They don't seem to have many images overall, so I can't imagine they are getting this directly from the API.
Weird.

If anyone has a specific question (since this is addressed to me) instead of posting as a thread on here and the CanStockPhoto forum, we're happy to answer directly through a support ticket - to avoid causing any undue confusion and misinformation.
I answered this directly on the CanStockPhoto discussion forum here, for anyone who is interested.
Regarding adding keywords, we have certain suggested keywords that are displayed with all our images so that they can be found better in web searches. This does not affect your CanStockPhoto search results, and helps drive more sales to your images. We know what we're doing here, and I can't imagine anyone will find a problem in helping drive you more sales.
Regarding removing of keywords - we do not make a habit of ever removing keywords. Generally if a keyword is removed, it's the inspectors doing it as a favor instead of rejecting the images. In the CanStockPhoto forum you included one of your images as an example. I'll re-post what I said there, for everyone's benefit given this is publicly posted here as well:
----- shed; storage shed; building; door; one door; handle; roof; door handle; siding; shingles; light; pole; lightpole; electrical; constructed; industrial; room for your text; copy space; wood; gray; green; brown; tan; rocks; grass; gold; wood pole; conduit; wooden; stained
This is actually a perfect example of containing keywords which are not relevant.

There should be little doubt that no buyer searching "electrical" will be expecting to find this image. This hurts legitimately related electrical images, and looks poor to anyone doing an "electrical" search. The same goes for someone searching "door handle", "gold", "light", or several of the other keywords included in the image.
Again, keywords should describe what is only physically and prominently visible in the image. None of the above keywords describe anything that is prominent in the image.
Furthermore, you included "copy space" and "room for your text" - but in fact there is no copy space available in the image, as it's tightly cropped around the shed. Copy space means there is room to add text that does not interfere with the main subject of the image. If you had an area of blue sky visible above the roof, then "copy space" would be appropriate, as a buyer could add text to the image without covering the main (and only) focus of the image, the shed.
Including vaguely related keywords will only hurt your images overall ranking, it's sales, and the results of many other legitimate searches. We generally recommend 5 to 15 focused keywords per image.
Duncan
-------------------------------------------- Duncan, Thanks for the information. Can you explain how vaguely related keywords will hurt my images overall ranking? Is there a penalty for people looking at an image and not buying it? There has been speculation in the microstock world that some sites penalize images with lots of keywords, or with many views and few sales. If Canstock uses some system like that, it would be great to know so I could edit my keywords accordingly. Thanks

I sure hope Duncan has a dam good reasonable explanation as to why CanStockPhoto is removing my keywords and inserting their crappy ones that no buyer in their right mind is going to search for??
I and CanStockPhoto are loosing sales due to missing and totally irrelevant keywords being inserted without my knowledge!
I am allowed 50 keywords which many of my images have on them and CanStockPhoto is removing my keywords and inserting theirs!
Anyone care to explain?
---------------------------------------- What words of yours did they remove?

I used Carbonite for a while, but grew to hate them because they choke off your uploading at some point. I too now use Backblaze which I love. Totally automated.
I also back up to external hard drives stored in a media storage fire safe as well as on DVDs stored off site. Nothing is 100% certain as a backup, so having multiple systems works well for me.

I have to say, this whole "partner" thing sort of eludes me. Who is going to buy images from this junky site, which looks like an auto-generated "content farm" full of malware, instead of at one of the known, reputable sites - where prices are already so low that experienced photographers no longer even bother to upload the shots they took 5 years ago? If the "partners" are selling images at prices even lower than the established sites that feed them, why are the established sites undercutting themselves? None of this makes sense - to me, anyway.
When checking out gograph.com just completely ignore the front page for now - there's a method to the madness, but rest assured the actual front page will not look like that. There's been no marketing to date that I'm aware of, so at the moment it's just us on the site. But regarding prices, you'll notice gograph.com is priced significantly above CanStockPhoto's - not lower than. CanStockPhoto has our own market niche, so distribution agreements (i.e. w/Fotosearch) are very useful for getting into different markets & demographics.
Okay I'm logging off for the night. I'd just noticed the thread and thought I'd help clarify any confusion. Have a great weekend everyone -
Thank you for stopping by and helping to explain things. It's very helpful.

What are the names of the two new Fotolia partners?
BTW, the blog post for Fotolia's partnership with Moo is gone, so maybe they are no longer partners?
Sorry, just saw your post today. It was Visible Spectrum and VisualBee. I list what changes I made at the very end of the first post when I make an update. Seems likely about Fotolia/Moo. I'll remove the link

A Twitter post from six hours ago says there were 30 layoffs. I don't know how big the company is, how many they employ. Is that a lot?
I can't find that twitter post, might have been deleted.
--------------------------- last time I counted, which was more than a year ago, I found about 90 admin badges. That of course did not count many back office people (accounting, sales, legal, HR) who don't typically post much, so the number would be somewhat higher. I would guess 150 or so total employees not counting inspectors.

Looks like the Getty smoke and mirrors machine has at least one last gasp before they have to come clean that the net profit is falling. Layoffs only help the bottom line for so long.

Sad news for those affected. Hopefully they've had enough warning to sock away some cash and at least get their resume updated.
