Hi all,

I've been given access to try out this neat piece of software and published my thoughts.

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2022/08/30/dall-e-2-glimpse-into-the-future-of-artificial-intelligence-image-creation/

Also, here's me riding a bike with my camera as created by DALL-E 2.

SS is using AI to review images and has been doing so for about 3 years.

230
My average return per download has been dropping steadily for the past 4 years.

Earned $1,450 for this book cover (Paris background only) - various RM licenses

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is Stock Photography Dead?
« on: August 06, 2022, 06:13 »
Interesting topic, Raul, thanks for posting. Imo, it's far from dead, at least for those who are in the top 5%.

For instance, Kaspars Grinvalds, a lifestyle photographer, is pulling in $4k/month with his port of 9,622 images on SS and similar amounts in AS, iStock etc.

Link to his SS port: https://www.shutterstock.com/g/grinvalds

But boy does he work hard and his concepts are trendy and well-executed.

I interviewed him for my blog a few months back and would be interesting to catch up with him in a few years to see if his earnings have decreased substantially.

As for the rest of us mere mortals, including myself, it's difficult as we're shooting more generic stuff which perhaps doesn't rank so well. I'm relying on "old" pics that have maintained a high ranking. The new stuff just seems to be buried in the SEs and doesn't help that when they do sell it's for small amounts, including at Alamy.

For newbies, no chance, take literally any traditional job and will pay more per hour. Or you've tapped into a niche that few others can compete.

Dear Microstock Colleagues,

Happy to share with you my July 2022 earnings report.

Hope you had a good month.

Irony of microstock is that having invested $500 on a tilt-shift lens, a $90 sale at SS just popped in for this distorted junk shot that I uploaded in 2017! Stupid buyers!

237
I'm seeing a 35% drop 2022 vs 2019 on average download commissions at SS.

Note: Also includes video sales.

238
Looks interesting. But is this effect not something you can create in photoshop?

Maybe it is a stupid question, architecture is not my forte.

Not a stupid question at all.

With all the perspective adjustments and then twisting and distortion adjustments (and final cropping) the pixels get stretched which often leads to a loss of quality in the final image. There's also the time it takes to make all these adjustments, imagine a shoot you have 50 images and you have to go one by one. To get a final product that is close to the final version at 24mm is pretty cool. 19mm would have been better but the least expensive lens I saw for that price was $2k and beyond my budget.

As for the tilt-shift effect, sure you can try to create on PS/LR but also not the same as the blurs may be too obvious as digital.

Hey all, quick update here on my stock business! Ive recently invested on a tilt-shift lens, more precisely a Samyang 24mm f3.5 T-S Lens Tilt & Shift ED AS UMC Manual Focus Nikon Fit and in this blog post Ill outline why I thought it was a good decision and perhaps its a niche piece of gear that youll also consider investing.

General Stock Discussion / Re: This month's sales
« on: July 01, 2022, 05:25 »

241
Hi,

I'm trying them out and uploaded just 97 images in the past 2 months (little bit every week). These are my earnings, which I suppose for the small size of my port is OK.

Volumes are strong, although as you can see the average price is pretty low. I'll keep uploading when I feel like digging through microstock archives.

Anybody else have any experiences?

242
Alamy is still worth it imo, even if they're promoting subscriptions. At least the pricing points are something I can live with, just hope they won't drop any further.

244
Old thread but good concept, Alex. I hope you don't mind but it gave me food for thought. Here is my prediction for 2031:

Only one stock agency called, ShutterGettyStock, but it has 3 divisions:

Division 1: The Free Library. Contains 70% of all the original stock assets plus fresh content. Includes photos, videos and audio. All assets can be used without restriction and downloaded for free, but both the buyer and the contributor pay a nominal annual membership to join. (why would a contributor pay a membership fee? I have no idea, but some do)

Division 2: Royalty Free Licenses. Includes photography, video and audio assets, all priced the same. No subscriptions. Standard royalty-fee licenses. All assets cost 75 cents each to download and contributor receives 15%. (this is the division that most of the remaining contributors upload to. Review standards are high, and rejected content go to the Free Library, providing the contributor pays the annual library membership fee)

Division 3. Premium Division. Highly curated assets, including photography, video and audio. Royalty Free and Rights Managed Licenses. Contributors have to apply to join. Extremely high standard reviews. Pricing ranges from $250 to thousands of dollars per download, depending on asset type, license, usage, extra seats, etc. Contributors receive 20% to 40% depending on what level they are on. (Well, the agency has to make its money somehow ;))

Note: The subscription model is now completely gone. The agency decided it didn't work and caused too many problems and the downfall of all the other agencies.

Interesting, at least it keeps things simple. As for my my 2cents...

You mentioned we'll soon receive 15% of 75cents = 11cents

Inflation is now at 10% and if it keeps going at this rate in 9 more years 11cents = 2cents

Division 3 sounds interesting but I probably won't qualify. By then there will be no such thing as a "photographer", will just be programmers making fancy CGI and creating sim-like models in different settings.

At least my 2031 EU-certified drone will be super awesome, probably 2 hour battery life and easily shooting 16K clips. Too bad authorities will only allow me to fly a maximum of 30 metres altitude and 100 metres radius, even after passing numerous certifications and administration hoops. If I try to go above 30 metres it will alert the authorities and will be automatically penalized some DJI token funds.

The future looks bright! :D

Here's a fun post I just put together strolling down memory lane on top-5 "Exciting News" announcements:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2022/06/16/top-5-agency-exciting-news-announcements/

246
Out of traditional stock agencies, Alamy, have always been very cordial to me.

I still have a love/hate relationship with them though! This month is more hate as I'm "owning the blank page" with 0 earnings.

247
My fault for publishing before the end of the month as two Arcangel book cover sales came in :) Finally the hard work is paying off. Just hope sales can be more consistent.

Here's one book cover published in Greece with the image I uploaded (left) and final version. The other sale was in Hungary and haven't located the cover but will keep looking.

As for prices, you'll find out at the June's report!

248
Dear Stock Colleagues,

Welcome to the May 2022 detailed monthly report where, as usual, Ill focus on all my stock earnings for the month. Overall, its been a busy May particularly with loads of drone content produced and knowledge acquired which I'm happy to share.
