I got the "welcome to Veer" email as well.  Would be cool to see the marketplace succeed.

252
Take a look at Zenfolio as well.  I have the pro account there and it's loaded with features.

253
I'm trying to update my SS stats with Cushystock and it doesn't seem to work, but then Cushystock is buggy anyway.

254
SS in my experience is definitely one that needs to be continually fed in order to keep  steady earnings there.  I'm not producing a heck of alot of stock imagery these days (8-10 images/ week) and it seems like SS needs about 20 or so quality images/ week in order to maintain decent sales.

A great budget two lens combo that's great for stock (I used to use this combo):

Sigma 17-70mm (around 350.00 US).  Good minimum focus distance too.
Tamron 55-200mm F4.5.6 (175.00 US).  A great little gem that takes excellent images.

Well for one I have better equipment because of microstock because I've earned enough money to finally get a decent DSLR and lenses.  I'd say "better" on the technical end since I pay more attention to making sure my images are clean, sharp and well composed.  On another hand though I'd say I'm a "different" photographer because of stock and have even changed my outdoor pursuit habits as a result.
For example, I used to go on hikes just for the sake of going on hikes, but now I choose hikes and other destinations at least in part by their "stock value".
I used to do more fine art orientated photography, but now not so much anymore because stock pays better.

Roughly a 10% drop in sales for me over last month, which was my BME.  The drop comes primarily from IS; all other sites are pretty much that same for me compared to last month. Dreamstime however gave me a BME and doubled my income there compared to last month.

 Here is my breakdown:

IS:   47%
DT:  22.5%
SS:  16.5%
StockXpert: 9.5%
BigStock: 4%

Ah yet another reason (as though I needed one) not to live in the U.S.!

I think I would go to Canada though it might be too cold for my hubby in the winter...
All depends on where in Canada you are talking about.  The west coast where I live has a similar climate to that of Seattle.

Off Topic / Re: human swine gave us swine flu

At least all the swine flu misconceptions are keeping the price of pork down. I think I'm gonna have some BBQ pork tenderloin tonight for supper!

Photo Critique / Re: How are these landscapes?
« on: May 02, 2009, 12:06 »
I shoot mostly landscapes too and get alot of landscape rejections.  I would think however that your Mt. Ranier shot would sell to some degree, but again, microstock in general doesn't place a high priority on such images unless it conveys some kind of concept.  Now if you had a tent in there or a young hiking couple holding hands and enjoying the scenery it would be more marketable as a stock image.
In my nature and landscape stock photography I try to get some sort of a human element into the image.
Sometimes I'll even do a dayhike and carry along a tent and a few camping props to quickly set up, take a few shots, and then pack up again.
Don't take rejections personally as they're reviewing purely on the basis of a "will it sell here?" mentality.

Image requirements:

What are the technical requirements for submitting to Veer Marketplace?
Our technical requirements for JPEG photos or illustration:
- minimum pixels = 1200 x 1600 (approximately 4 x 5 at 300 ppi)
- preferred pixels = 1920 x 2560 or larger (the larger the better!)
- maximum file size = 20 megabytes (compressed file size)
- sRGB or Adobe RGB 1998 color profile
- JPEG format saved at highest quality (lowest compression level)
- Balanced highlights and shadows (RGB shadows no lower than 5, highlights should not be higher than 250)
- No interpolations

Minimum payout is $100.00
I didn't see anything about a minimum amount of time that a submitted image had to remain on the site like what DT and BigStock have

Is there a reverse mount adapter for extreme macros?

Microstock Services / Re: Managing images on multiple sites
« on: April 27, 2009, 21:58 »
I made the mistake of buying Cushystock, but at least it has a useful keyword generator.  What I've been doing now is in the Lightroom Library module I go to the "Label" line and add in abbreviations of where the given image has been uploaded, so a label for an image might look something like "SS DT StockXpert IS" and so on.
That way I can tell through Lightroom what images have been submitted where.

Software - General / Re: Problems with CushyStock

Sounds like you have similar problems to what I'm experiencing as I have the same build.  It's not even worth using Cushystock until the problems are fixed.

Software - General / Problems with CushyStock
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:57 »
I recently purchased the latest version of CushyStock and am having problem after problem with the software.  I scan my working folders but then they don't show up and just ask for me to scan them again, Shutterstock is the only port that with import into cushystock; IS, DT and StockXpert won't import at all.
I did a full re-install after it crashed with the first install and subsequently refused to reload.
At least the Cushy wizard seems to work and the keyword generator is great.
I emailed Cushy admin and they just suggested to do a reinstall, which I've done, but the current installation is worse than the former.
Anybody else have trouble like this with Cushy Stock?

General Stock Discussion / Re: March 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: April 03, 2009, 13:53 »
Perhaps percentages coupled with images portfolio size is more helpful:

Istock: 58% (far and away BME)  143 active images
SS: 18%  464 images
StockXpert: 13% 593 images
DT: 9% 385 images
BigStock 1% 90 images

123RF / Re: Sales and reviews
« on: March 31, 2009, 23:22 »
I haven't had alot of success with 123RF, but then perhaps I never gave them a fair shake (only about a 50 image test port). I currently have 4 agencies that are paying me enough to make it worth my while, so I don't know if I'd want to add a 5th.  Funny how others say that sites like StockXpert aren't doing well for them, but for me it does alright (600 image port for me over there).  IT all seems relative to your port content.

General - Top Sites / Re: Big 4?
« on: March 28, 2009, 20:43 »
My big 4 are Istock (around 60% of my total sales revenue), then SS, StockXpert and DT; although SS is declining as I don't have alot of images in my port anymore to submit there.  I've managed one payout from BigStock, but sales there are slooooow.

I started out with Olympus as well (E-500) then moved to an E-510.  Last year I sold my Olympus stuff and went with the Sony A350.  Now I also bought a Sony A700 and use the A350 as a backup or whenever I want something with a live view and tilting screen.
I particularly love the Sony's for all that nice Minolta AF glass still out there at great prices.

271
IS will be far and away my BME,  StockXpert has been faithfully steady for me this year.  I haven't uploaded anything to SS over the past few weeks, so sales there have tanked for me.

272
You can also do an HDR blend out of a single image, which is a technique I employ more often than doing multiple exposures.
My general method is to take a single RAW image and generate 3 images; one underexposed by a stop, the original exposure, and one overexposed by a stop and toss the three into my Dynamic Photo HDR software.  That's what I did with the above semi image as well as this one which will be hitting flame status on Istock soon:

iStockPhoto.com / Re: BDE at Istock
« on: March 20, 2009, 12:26 »
Yes I know I already meet the criteria, but with my submissions to DT, I have to wait 6 months before deleting those images, so I'm making the end of September my target should Istock continue to be in the 50% or more range of total income generation for me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Got Flames?
« on: March 19, 2009, 22:32 »
My only official flamer and seems to be popular around this time of year.  Last year it got me close to flame status and this year when easter started getting close, sales picked up again.

This next one isn't at flame status just yet, but I'm sure it will as it's been getting almost daily sales for the past few months:

I suppose it's a good seller as it's just as much or moreso a conceptual shot as it is a shot of the sport of orienteering.  I ran this image through HDR software to get the look I wanted before submitting it.

iStockPhoto.com / BDE at Istock
« on: March 19, 2009, 22:26 »
Today I made $16.68; mostly off two images.  Sales for me at Istock have been steadily climbing since November and are now at the point where it makes over 50% of my total sales.  Not sure what's going on over there, but if it continues, i may look at becoming exclusive in September.
Thanks Istock!
