The King of Stock speaketh. Pay attention you dogs.

Mike - I gave you a heart, which should put you into double figures for the year.

Kudos to the agency and the photographer but I think the buyer is a fool too easily parted from his money. I'd fire him.

Another potentially useful thread pertaining to the business reduced to a playground spat.

F's sake.

I have other ventures so microstock is part-time but very profitable at present. My capital expenses on hardware are flat. I shoot everything at home or in the streets of London. The biggest cost is time - or as I often wonder, what could I earn by doing something else.

However, the added value of working for myself and never going back to having some suit I have no respect for telling me what to do......is immeasurable.

I've had a few niggles around acceptance of late but other than that they are still top of the line on  sales and site performance at my end.

The threads you mention seem to be started by and filled by the same people over and over and I find it hard to believe that "thousands" of others just read without posting....if the issues were more universal I'd expect to see a substantial increase in flaming torches and pitchforks.

But in fairness, I don't think SS are that bothered nor do I think that attitude has changed either way since I joined five years ago. Maybe it was different in olden times but that seems to be the case with everything from socks to cars. SS's attitude is much the same as any corporate entity, which was made clear to me at a Fortune 100 company many years ago, when I was told to "forget all that we are in business to serve the customer nonsense...we are in business to increase dividend for the shareholders or we're not in business anymore."

DT have been in 5th place for most of 2014 but still showing slight year on year growth. Largely because (IMO) my port is 50% smaller there, thanks to their pompous, ill considered and unfathomable "similars" policy.

Thankfully, despite the claims that microstock is dead, sales are very robust in the rest of the top and middle tier.

Well and I just got another one today! Here it is:)

"My name is ****, I am currently just a regular 17 year old studying for my a levels.....it would mean a lot if you could help me out and make my dreams come true.

Please could you reply as soon as possible

Many Thanks,
***** "

And here is what I replied:
"Dear ****,
I appreciate your kind words about my photography. However, I do not need "credits" or "advertising" - my business is to sell photos and I am doing quite well.  Surely it would be worth to sacrifice a couple of coffees to make your dreams come true?

Am I mean?

I'd be surprised if the author was in fact 17 and not some fat 52 year old charlatan.

If they are indeed 17 I'd be inclined to point out the majority of us get nothing for nothing in this world and that anyone aspiring to create the "finest" social media website ever really ought to toughen up asap and get a newspaper delivery job or tap their parents for a few quid, rather than writing begging letters.

I am being mean.

You should connect with Beatrix the Yoga spammer. Beatrix might recommend a position whereby those taking salaries yet expecting everyone else to work for bugger all, will somehow end up with their own foot up their arse.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is there a new king?
« on: July 15, 2014, 03:49 »
I'd say the opposite...... I'd love for a better agency to either emerge from the existing ones or be created. It could put pressure on the other places to offer better deals.

That would be nice. Effective competition with a proper business plan and an understanding of the needs and aspirations of their contributors....as opposed to the plethora of bungling opportunists we have seen in recent years and as a counterpoint to the money grubbing tactics we have witnessed of late.

There are still gaps in the market....here's hoping someone out there has the gumption to fill them.

260
I trust people are pushing back through the correct channels - as I have just done for a couple of silly focus rejections.

Until the chap who manages submit@shutterstock is brought before the inner circle and explains his failure to hit query resolution targets is due to rocketing rejection disputes - nothing will change.

I usually have quite good amount of FB deal SOD sales almost everyday. Since 27 June I didn't get a single FB deal SOD sale!
Is there anyone having the same experience or it's just me?

Also stopped dead for me as of 27 June. I haven't seen any announcements about the  FB deal ending.

263
The point that you don't seem to grasp......

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us get it - but you seem intent on hammering away at a bent nail. Presumably with your own head.

Take a step back. Find some equilibrium. Breathe easy. SS is not a perfect marriage for anyone - neither is it to blame for all the crap we have to wade through.

PS. The financial info is useful but personally, I only need to see it once.

Off Topic / Re: Why are we losing so many members?
« on: June 12, 2014, 13:20 »
For me:

1) not enough active contributors - fresh meat is needed
2) the same old faces saying the same old things over and OVER again ad nauseum in the belief we are all stupid or blind
3) too few solutions offered up for far too many problems
4) visibility of any hard data to back up bold statements about the way the business is going
5) animosity towards anyone not compelled to wallow in the collective misery or who actually believes there is still work to do and money to be made
6) The stupid voting system

PS. Really don't understand all the kerfuffle around Yuri. Like him or not, If he succeeds in giving Getty and Istock a well deserved kick up the arse....more power to his right foot as far as I'm concerned.

265
I don't think about iStock anymore I think about Thinkstock - As an indie the PP accounts for 60-70% of my earnings there which means iStock is not much more than an uploading portal.
Initially Getty created Thinkstock as subs site to compete with SS, but it looks like Thinkstock failed to do it.
With the introduction of subs at iStock I guess they will soon close the Thinkstock
and move the subs business back to iStock.

Very possible. Although sometimes its safer to leave well alone. When buyers get disturbed and moved around some of them start to look around :)

Joined them in January this year expecting great things based on their poll results. I've uploaded my port steadily at a rate of 100+ images per month - but my earnings have barely improved on the paltry $22 earned in February. I'm looking at $25-$30 this month with 500 more images online. Rubbish!

I won't be uploading the balance of my port or any new stuff based on these returns.

268
No email for me which is a shame - I would have framed it and put it on the wall next to my one and only sales notification for 2014

What we really need is a greater contribution from the silent majority.

Qui tacet consentire videtur

I am silently disagreeing with you.

My Aunt Florence would always say; if you have nothing to say then you'd better not say it. Odd woman - drank scotch by the bottle and rode a bicycle until she was in her eighties even though she had an artificial left foot.

Conversation with a lawyer:

Me: I was wondering if you wouldn't mind working for free?
Lawyer: You already owe me ten dollars.
Me: What for?
Lawyer: Make that twenty.

but at this rate it's very possible.

it's also known as herd behavior :)

I don't mind being part of the herd. However, I do object to the feeling of being milked without my permission or prior consultation.

Personally, I dropped out of the DPC because I can afford to in the short term. If I were heavily invested in FT I would be more likely to adopt a "wait and see and measure" approach - purely on the basis that a significant number of the predictions about the future of microstock here and elsewhere have proved unfounded as far as my experience goes.

These are seasoned pros being asked to work for free.

Well then they will know that sometimes working for free is normal in the world of photography.

Can you let me have your details please? Next time somebody asks me to work for free I can politely decline and point them in your direction.

Surely you would not rule out ever doing a thing for free ? Suppose you realised that it would be a really good way of getting a foot in the door somewhere you wanted to.

I won't take my clothes off or have sex with anyone to get a foot in the door either.
