The good news is that they turned off the cap on my account this month!

I don't know what is going on with Canstock this month but I have sold 3 high priced images this month for $24.90, $19.90 and $9.80 to bring my total earnings to $80. Normally it is $10 to $20 a month. Whatever they are doing - lets hope it continues.

I applied for a payout!

Mmhhh... .Good idea about cashing out regularly! I think they owe me about $180 or so.

Not Stocksy. I do have iStock but I'm waiting for the individual sales to be updated in Microstockr. It didn't even show a bump in June though - and July results are worse.

Yep - it lasted all of one month!

I don't disagree - but there is a difference between who the law says is responsible versus who a slimy lawyer will try to sue. So the most likely ones in danger are the publisher (the buyer), the agency (as they have money) and finally the photographer. But I still believe that if the photographer has not lied about releases, and has taken the photo from a public place in the US, then they are not strictly liable for usage.

OK - I can see the interest for a general photographer, but stock photographers always have to keyword their images and so I can search for an image by searching for that keyword. I also have many more images and they wouldn't fit in the storage of an iPad, but that is another story.

As I say, there is nothing wrong with your offering - I was trying to think how I personally would use it.

Usually the person who uploads the photo.

Do you mean the photographer or the publisher here? The publisher is the one that puts the image out in front of a wide audience in their magazine, website or advert. They are the one that either use the photo in a purely editorial sense or imply some sort of product or commercial validation which would definitely not be appropriate if the building is protected in some way.

As long as the image was taken from a public place and there was no deception about whether a release was available then the photographer is not at risk (I know that in the US anyone can sue anyone else, but in law I don't believe they are at risk)

It looks interesting, but I'm struggling with the relevance for stock photographers. Does it only look at photos that are actually on the iPad, or can you select one photo from somewhere and it goes off to find all similar ones on the internet, like the Google image search?

I think the answer is No, and No!

Software / Re: StockSubmitter Client reviews...
« on: August 05, 2018, 08:44 »
I've written a number of blog posts about Stock Submitter and how I use it (that you can find here: https://www.backyardsilver.com/?s=stock+submitter)

I have used it now for about 2 years and find it essential to support my uploads to about 16 agencies. I don't upload as many as you - more like 100 - 400 a month, but I don't see the issues you are reporting. I also don't do as many model releases either, so that might play into my experience.

Yes, there are issues sometimes with some agencies, but if I come back to those agencies after a few days, I find that the App has been updated and the issue has been fixed. Because it remembers which images have been successfully uploaded, it is easy to just select a bunch and let the system decide which ones need to be uploaded to an agency that was missed before.

I can't imagine how difficult it is to keep an app like this up to date as agencies change their page designs, but I think the developer does a good job at it.

That is the million dollar question....

Great content that meets a buyer's needs. And is lucky enough to be shown to them!

I can guarantee that 90-100% of the capping theorists here are nowhere near $2,500 per month from Shutterstock.  :)

I should have been if I wasn't capped!

Here are my last 12 months worth of Shutterstock earnings to throw into the mix. I'm not saying they are good - they are what they are, but they are pretty variable

My July was quiet, but I still managed to beat the earnings from the previous July. That maintains my record of improving my earnings over the previous year to 14 consecutive months now. How do I do it - read my book  ;D

The full report on July is on my blog as usual.

Have we all really got the spare time to worry about a single image appearing on Google Maps???

Normally when that happens, there is also a pop-up browser window asking you to manually log into the site. Sometimes one of that Captcha things. So the program is waiting for that to occur, I suspect.

You are right about the video bit - I don't think it was ever intended to cope with a walking camera person. The idea of putting your monopod in your belt is interesting but I find that I never take my monopod anywhere. It has just been a waste of money for me. That isn't to say that this device will end up in a drawer sometime in the future, but for steadying photos and static video it could be interesting. Just my thoughts without actually having seen one!

I came across a new product a few days back that looked interesting for travel photographers - Steadify. I talked about it on my blog here: https://www.backyardsilver.com/2018/07/steadify-you-are-the-tripod/ but basically it is a support that fastens to a belt and then has an extending monopod like arm that comes up to support the camera or lens. I've seen nothing other than their publicity information, but it looked interesting.

Anyway, the point of this post - their Kickstarter campaign has just gone live and there are some interesting early bird offers. Here is the link to that campaign:
http://heape.fnd.to/steadify. This is not an affiliate link but the company did provide me with a shortened link so that they know where the interest is coming from.

I'm planning to buy one and test it on my next travel trip.

My first reaction was that I would stop uploading to iStock. Images seem to get into Getty from all sorts of agency agreements anyway!

I have portfolio over 8000+ images, many years of hard work, days and nights, good and bad times. I never ever had 40% of monthly decrese - this month is horrible.
I am selling new content from 2018 only 3-5% :(  So I decide won't supply them longer

If you don't mind me saying, that is exactly what you should not do. Although part of me says that the more experienced contributors leave a site the better for those that remain!

This is just the latest iteration of SS's algorithms. Perhaps they will change next month and favor newer work - who knows. The only answer is to continue to upload to all agencies so that the one that takes the lead for a time has your images.

Steve

322
I've kept quiet for a long time on this debate, but I agree with Zero Talent. No-one is saying that SS don't control sales - of course they want to maximize their revenue and their net income and so they endlessly play with their algorithms to present a set of images to a buyer in response to their search terms that first, try to make sure they buy an image, second, to try to maximize SS's net income and third, present them with a fresh looking collection of images. So they try to manage this all the time.

What is disputed, is that on top of doing this to maximize their profitability and the happiness of the buyer, they also care about the contributor to the extent that they will move that contributor up and down the search results to try to smooth out the income of the contributor over the week or month. I just can't see why this would be important to them, and besides being pretty complex, it doesn't seem to meet a real business goal for SS. It isn't like it is short of contributors or new images that they need to try to keep all contributors happy in some way.

I'm currently solving this issue by exporting from Premiere with an uncompressed codec and then using the free program MPEG Streamclip to take in that intermediate file and export as PhotoJpeg in a MOV container. An extra step, but it works fine.

I'm uploading some 4K files as well - the FTP server is very slow this evening, although the files are slowly being uploaded to Adobe Stock.
