Don't worry what you should do. Contact Shutterstock and they can decide whether they should start a conversation with the copycat. If they feel it is too blatant they will put a stop to it. They will question the other artist and let you know what they decide.
Agreed, I'd just let Shutterstock know about it.

I can't explain the technicalities of how it actually does those thing (I'm guessing it wouldn't be that interesting/ understandable anyhow) but I can vouch for the WooCommerce set of plug-ins. They are very well supported and are generally top notch. The media file download feature isn't new so I'm guessing the have the bugs pretty well worked out of it.

I got a notification email today in a new format. A welcomed change and makes for a nice overview on what needs to be fixed / improved.

I can assure that I wont be any competition, but what are those serious gaps? What subject matter is high in demand and not covered well? I am not asking to give away your secrets but I find it hard to believe that there are high demand subjects which are not covered. Unless it is a inaccessible niche, like diamond cutting, which I doubt will be high in demand either.
There doesn't have to be a high demand, just a little demand. When you are the only person with images you'll get all the sales. Even a very simple subject like a male flipping a pancake, there is only 4 photos of this (flipping an american fluffy pancake) search terms: man flip pancake If you take 15-20 shots on that subject, it isn't going to earn you $10,000 but I'm guessing it would pay back your time and model fee investment + a decent amount on top of that if it was aprt of a larger shoot where you did 10 other similar subjects.

Inspite of the volume a lot of content is still missing. I tried to find images of the local beer and i think only two pictures were apprpriate. Once you drill down to more speliazed and local stuff there are huge gaps in the collection.
Also many subjects need to be reshoot in regular intervals, think of all the business images with brick like mobile phones. Or business meetings with tablets instead of laptops, mobile fitness gadgets etc...
so there is still is hope for us if you dont specialize in sunsets.
Agreed, there are still some serious holes. I also agree with Uncle Pete that some holes just are worth filling, but there are still lots of potential for good images of missing subjects.

I'm afraid to disappoint, but I won't be setting up an agency It is an incredible amount of work and very risky, and not what I dream of doing the next 10-20 years. There are people much better than me which would much better suited for the task. MicrostockGroup is what it is (I feel) because it is a neutral stand-point between all the agencies. If it was an agency or part of an agency then the neutrality would be gone. Just look how emotional every Stocksy thread gets. If I were to set up an agency, I think Stocksy would be exactly what I'd want to set up. No sense reinventing the wheel.

I submitted a red carpet application for a couple of events and was granted access. One event has earned me enough money to have been worthwhile, the other not at all. I think the trick is to pick events that have image use / interest spanning a much broader market than the event itself. You probably aren't going to sell many (if any at all) news images from the event - the majority (or possibly all) of the sales will come from searches done in the following months / year.
Rugby could be a good topic. Good luck.

The discussion of what do I need made me contact and ask them. If there's a free way to take payments, I'd do that. Let me ad, from the other discussion, self hosted or selling on my own. If a site broke even, I'd call that a success. There's always room to improve. If it loses money, I would be unhappy.
Thank you for contacting WooThemes! I am happy to help you out.
So to set something like that up, you're going to need the following:
Self hosted WordPress installation. A theme: http://www.woothemes.com/product-category/themes/ WooCommerce: http://www.woothemes.com/woocommerce/ Photography: http://www.woothemes.com/products/woocommerce-photography/ Payment Gateway to collect payments. We have core WC payment gateways and premium ones.
There it is. I don't know what that means in costs. I already have five websites, (earning nothing) so that's not going to be a new expense.
I'll wait and watch for someone here to test it. I'm not that good at WP and not in a hurry. What I want to put up is not serious. It would be some red/blue 3D, maybe some old B&W shots, just things that interest me and not high on the market demands.
That means that it would cost minimum $79. The woocommerce plug-in is free. They make their money on selling extensions like the photo plugin. The cost breakdown is this Woocommerce - free Theme - free (or cost if you buy one) payment gateway - paypal is free (or cost if you want to accept other payment types) photo plugin - $79 for the first year then $40/year after that to stay updated. Free if you never update.

You often don't see the payment gateway attached to a store.
Paypal payment plug-in is free with woocommerce. I also have braintree payment for processing credit cards.. but on the front end you don't see anything to do with braintree - it's just who handles the credit card transactions on the back end.
agreed though- the plugins do add up.

I haven't tried out this plugin yet, but I'm pretty excited they (woothemes) finally launched their photo plug-in. http://www.woothemes.com/photography/I've used woocommerce a lot and it is very reliable and feature rich (and easy to upgrade - unlike ktools) but things would have to work pretty automagically for the photography plug-in to work for stock photos, but it looks promising so far. If you give it a try - please share your thoughts / experiences.

A while ago I was directly contacted by DT asking my permission to use a certain number of my images in their beta test program. Their email was considerate and polite, and I was given an easy way to opt out - which I did since I didn't particularly like the deal. I understand that the agency might be looking for new sources of revenue and trying new things out, and I also don't have to like everything they are doing, but if they are properly informing me and giving me an easy opt out - I don't see a problem with that. In fact, I don't see a problem with that at all. This is how it should be.
Very good point here. I'm opted out and don't particularly like the deal, but a big applause to Dreamstime for making an easy opt-out before the deal launches.

Thanks leaf ... I am using a Tool, now working, but, when I press the "Start Again" button, opens the Microstockgroup site, not an option for entering the keyword again.
thanks... fixed

Ok, I've got the keyword tool working again http://microstockgroup.com/tools/keyword.phplet me know if you find any bugs - it is successfully (.. i think) using the Shutterstock API so it should be much more robust than before (it won't break) and quicker ... and a lot better adherence to good coding practice.

Are there any other agencies that provide APIs?
I think most of them have an API (at least the larger sites)

Well hopefully this deal is better than it looks. I'm hoping so... but so far it is looking essentially like $2.00 for unlimited uses by google customers (for the next 12 months).. with unknown terms after that.
I've opted out.

Thanks for asking the questions in the DT thread Sean. Maybe I'm just dense, but it still seems we are awaiting a clear straight forward answer of how much we will get paid ($2.00 once / more if they get used/picked in phase 2.. what is phase 2 etc.etc.) and how Google will be able to sell / resell our images :S
