A good idea to drum up traffic to the site, but I'm a regular visitor and don't really want/need the reminder.

Would it be possible to include an 'unsubscribe' link on the email and/or provide an unsubscribe option 'Notifications and Email' section of the member profile? Or is this already covered by the 'Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email' option?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Can I reactivate deactivated files?
« on: June 03, 2009, 12:29 »
You can reactivate a disabled file on IS by sending the request to [email protected].
It's not a matter of routine to have this done, so be sure to include a good reason.

There is no way to recover an image on SS after you delete it. The only way to get it back into your portfolio is to resubmit it. The resubmitted image will be rejected unless you include an explanation of why you are resubmitting a deleted image.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: what? third reject from istock
« on: June 01, 2009, 19:45 »
If I was an iStock application inspector I'd have rejected them for the following reasons:

Image 1: Low commercial value. The purpose of your application is to show that you know how to make 'good' commercial imagery, and by 'good' I mean images that have the potential to sell more than a trivial amount. This image does not pass muster in that regard.

Dog: Focus or motion blur issues around the tail. There's also a bit of dirt on his/her ear that should be cloned out.

Jet: Copyright issues - the manufacturer's brand name is clearly visible. For any agency to accept this as a creative image (as opposed to an editorial) is just plain wrong. If it was my image I'd remove the background and landing gear, then stick it in a bright sky to give the impression of flight. But then again what do I know about aircraft imagery?

If you truly have no clue as to why these were rejected and/or consider the rejection reasons to be 'BS', then iStock is definitely not the place for you.

General Stock Discussion / Re: May 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: June 01, 2009, 17:37 »
Based on what you said you've been doing for the past six months I'd guess you're subtly suggesting optimisation of the meta data.  I've thought about this quite a lot over time.  Yuri says it makes a big difference and he does a lot of it, but Andres says it doesn't make any difference and doesn't do any of it. Do you have any insights from your optimisation sabbatical that you'd care to share with us Stephen? Or is it too commercially sensitive to share in such a competitive environment?  ;)

..or am I totally off track?

Sorry, but I've said about as much as I'm comfortable with.

Any other possible theories?

It's pretty plain to me: You've benefited from search engine streamlining/revamping at several key agencies. Your aim should now be to capitalize on your increased exposure. Sure, you could upload more, but that isn't absolutely necessary. So you need to ask yourself - what else can I do?

I can't understand why, but I hit a new record this month and finally met my goal of US$1,000 in a month (more than a year later than my target date). The last time I uploaded was in December, so I'm baffled as to why my sales are still rising.

I think this illustrates two things:
* some vital sales elements are (seemingly) beyond immediate control
* constantly uploading is not necessary to maintain or build sales

As to not understanding how you achieved a record sales month, I think you'd be wise to investigate how and why this happened.

Maybe you can modify one of these to suit your needs  ;)

Believe it or not, I've seen someone modify one of these things using a scrap hotshoe mount and coathanger wire to make an umbrella for the camera. It looked like a nice setup, and I've always wanted to have a go at making one. I think I'd try attaching it to the tripod mount instead of the hotshoe, though.

If you need to ask any of these questions then you need to hire people who know the business because you also have other issues to address.

Good luck.

Yes, and furthermore you should be posing this question to buyers, not suppliers. That being said, image size should be tied to use: XS & S are primarily for websites, M and above primarily for print. If you're averse to asking buyers, a good starting point might be to check the size of ad slots on a few publications/sites and develop your sizing from there. Or just assume that your competitors have already done this research and use one of their models.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Prices dont need to go down
« on: May 24, 2009, 01:34 »
To provide a counterpoint to the 'prices are too low' point of view: I've had the exact opposite experience, when I was informed that although my images were suitable, they could not be used because they weren't available on Shutterstock, and were thus unaffordable. Given the person who told me this and the reason the images were required, I was more than a little surprised.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock Paypal schedule
« on: May 23, 2009, 19:57 »
I know your question has already been answered, but here's a link to the schedule anyways:
http://www.istockphoto.com/docs/PayoutSchedule_2009.pdf

For PayPal you should make your request before 9am MST (= 4pm GST) on Monday to receive it the following Monday. The only exceptions to this in 2009 are Aug 3, Sep 7, and Oct 12, where Monday is a Canadian holiday and you have until 9am on Tuesday to make your request.

I wouldn't say anything to him because in all likelihood there is nothing I could ever say that might cause him pause.

General Photography Discussion / Re: "nobody" keyword?!
« on: May 17, 2009, 15:42 »
And your hamburgers will miss a lot of good sales from buyers looking for images without people.

I don't really think that's true. You might miss a few sales by not using 'nobody', but nothing significant.
A quick look at things on iStock clearly shows that not many buyers use 'Nobody' in their searches - probably because not many contributors use it as a keyword.
To wit: searching for 'hamburger' gives 3014 images; 'hamburger nobody' gives 483.

315
Sorry, Jeff, but I don't feel comfortable posting that info publicly - I'll send you a PM instead.

316
Ditto. If I have a need for it I'll spend. If I don't, I won't.
I've bought a monitor and two external HDs so far this year.

Here's a super-fast way: Just replace xxxx with the image number you want to delete, copy and paste into the address line of your browser, then hit Enter and *poof* it's gone. No fuss, no muss.

http://submit.shutterstock.com/delete.mhtml?id=xxxx&confirm=1&type=photos

A similar technique also works for DT.

I appreciate the responses.......so far those who have seen these conversions fall into two camps: ...

That may very well be, but I'm guessing you're getting these comments on Flickr, which is not a commercial image agency, and the people making the requests are not commercial buyers. Although these might have artistic appeal, I don't think there's a lot of commercial value present.
Still, you'll never know for sure until you try. It won't take much time/effort to upload a few ... go for it!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Mid-month catastrophy
« on: May 15, 2009, 15:36 »
If it's bad now, it's only going to get worse: this is a long weekend in Canada, and next week there's one in the USA.
When I had a regular job I looked forward to long weekends. Now, not so much.

I received my SV and Veer payments today. Payments from SV and Veer are done on the 15th of each month - if you earned enough money (>$10) you should have been paid today.

Note that SV has a 45 day waiting period so that your May 15 payment is from sales in March. Veer doesn't have the waiting period, and your May 15 payment is from sales in April.

Also note that on SV the royalty statement is not updated unless you sell something. The amount shown at the top (e.g. Current month accrued royalty: USD 8.40) never seems to be updated or accurate - you have to click on a month to see your earnings. If a month is missing this means you didn't make a sale that month. This may be the cause of your problems, litifeta.

sharply_done, I think I worded my question wrong.

Once they select some of your images and you are represented by Getty. Will you have an active account with them that allows you to upload more imges straight to them?

Maybe this is better formulated...

I understood your question the first time, and the answer is still the same. The Getty Flickr Collection is by invitation only. Getty selects the images from your Flickr portfolio, which you then submit for review. Apart from the bonus five images jeffclow just mentioned, you cannot make additional submissions. So no, you cannot upload more images straight to them.

322
Out of curiosity: Are you only able to send them the pics they chose from Flickr also for the future? Or can you upload to them more, once they want some of your Flickr stuff?

It's by invitation only, and you have to list an image there exclusively for two years. You can list images as RF or RM.

I would say it was related to number of downloads. I was going up for more than month:

Yes, but after the first month there's a noticeable change in the slope of your line. If DLs influenced the honeymoon, mine would have been over almost immediately - I had >1400 in my first month on SS. It took me two more months to get that number past 2000 DLs/month.

I had thought the honeymoon on SS was for new images, not new contributors.  Maybe I am wrong?  I haven't been a new contributor there since March 2005.

There's long been speculation that new contributors are somehow favored. This is a completely different thing than new images.

324
My charts show higher-than-normal sales for about my first month there (Jan 07). Maybe the honeymoon lasts 30 days? It's anybody's guess, really.

It's a fair guess that most people would be open to joining some sort of microstock association (e.g. microstock.org - click on it and look at the photo for a prophetic chuckle). From my point of view it would be an extremely good idea for leaf to purchase that domain name, then revamp this place into the forum for the organization.

What's turned me off so far is that certain people seem to be under the impression that they can (almost) single-handedly whip up some sort of commercial website, or that they can successfully enter the marketplace with an absolute minimum of venture capital. I'm also put off that the people with the most to say on this are also the ones who hardly sell anything - they seem to blame their lack of income on 'unfair commissions' rather than their inability to make and market commercial imagery.

As to what's missing, I think that to be perhaps one of the earliest goals any organization needs to set: a mission statement.
