I guess from the fact you are on this forum you are still supporting the Microstock middlemen?

I have a few hundred on Alamy and GL. I get a sale once in a blue moon, but at least they pay a few dollars and I don't feel like a total sap. I get the frustration. And I know some people still manage to make significant money from microstock. They must be churning out very salable shots at a high rate, things that can sell so many times that they make it on volume. I don't know how to do that. If you have a formula that works, great. But seriously - won't you have to work harder every year, for less return? Is that a career path that anyone wants to be on? I suppose it can still work as a part-time thing IF you can find that niche that brings in enough to be worthwhile.

"the clueless photographers were presumably not trying to pay their bills with their photography"
I don't know why you assume that Douglas.....

Seems like a safe bet to me. Well, maybe some of them are dreaming, or imagining, that they might one day make a living from photography. They'll find out that it doesn't matter how many times you give your stuff away in hopes of being "noticed" - while the middleman makes money from it.

Good article. It's sort of like the ethical treatment of animals: growing public awareness is steadily reducing the opportunities for commercial exploitation. Operations like 500px don't like big bright lights shone on them.
There will always be plenty of people desperate for 'exposure' and some sort of validation. But I think crowdsourcing - as a business model - peaked quite a while ago. And the same for it's corollary on the contributor side: "I want my work to be available from as many sources as possible". All that does in the long run is is force you to spend more and more time uploading, for a steadily reducing total return.

I got out of IS long ago, and recently ended it at DT and SS. But I still have a few hundred at Alamy and I'm sticking with them because when I do get a sale, I make a few dollars. I just wish I could get one more often - like maybe once a month :-) As it is now, I just have no motivation to do microstock. But who knows - maybe in the future Alamy comes out on top, as badly run companies like SS start to fade, and sales increase.
With IS I felt like every change they made had exactly one purpose: increase their profits. And if contributors had to jump through even more hoops, that didn't matter. With Alamy it seems like at least some of their effort is going into streamlining things for contributors. The amount of money anyone is likely to from a photo is now so small that unless uploading is just drop-dead simple, why even bother?

No worries, I'm in for the long haul. I just closed my accounts at SS and DT, because I was getting nothing but subscription sales and didn't want to support that 'business model' any longer. But I'm sticking with GL.

I think some of the guys who used to post every day about the brilliance of "Jon" at SS finally decided to move to a warmer climate.

SS responded promptly to my support request, paid me my balance and closed my account.
I deactivated all my files at DT, then sent an email asking how I would close the account. They responded by closing it, bang. Now I don't know if or when I'll get the roughly $150 they owe me. I'll post the outcome eventually.

I used iMacros to record one complete select/disable/back cycle, ran it in looping mode and it took care of all of them.

I thought they had some kind of formula where you could only disable a certain percentage at one time. Maybe it has changed since I disabled all of mine. Here's a thread where we talked about it 3 years ago... http://microstockgroup.com/dreamstime-com/how-can-i-delete-my-account-(dreamstime)/ Ron said it was 30% of your portfolio, that sounds like what I remember. Hopefully they got rid of that silly rule.
The rule is still there but it depends on how old the images are. I haven't uploaded in over a year so I could disable 100%. Which I just did.

I just disabled all sales types on SS, and disabled all my photos on DT (I used a macro recorder). They both owe me a few dollars for sales in December, and who knows when I'll get it; DT plays some nasty games.
But I've seen my last subscription sale; never again will these people sell one of my photos for dollars, and pay me pennies.

Getting out of DT has always been a royal pain. Besides the 6 month lock-in, there's no way to disable multiple files. Does anyone know of something like a Greasemonkey script that will disable everything?
UPDATE: I'm doing it with iMacros.

GL is on the chopping block for me. The ONLY site where I didn't get a sale in over a month with 6k images. Actually haven't had a sale there in over 3 months. Buh bye!
I last had a sale a few months ago. I'm leaving my (tiny) portfolio there for now because a sale nets a few dollars, and they have new ownership. Maybe something will happen.

Who's had any luck selling prints on Redbubble? I'm not interested in t-shirts or coffee mugs, just wall art.
I've never really tried to get going there, because they don't read IPTC and pounding in all the keywords seemed like too much work for tiny returns. But with FAA steadily morphing into Zazzle, and Crated going nowhere, I'm looking for any alternatives.

It's January 1, and like I said, I'm ending it at DT and SS.
In December, I made much less on both sites than ever before; that's no surprise because I haven't submitted anything in a long time. What's more interesting is that on SS my December sales were 95% subs; and on DT that number was 100%. The few dollars I still make mean nothing compared to the anger I feel every time I think about how these companies are ripping me off. If you disagree, and still feel it's worthwhile, I get that. But personally I no longer want to support what I see as increasingly slimy, deceptive and poorly run businesses.
I just checked the SS and DT sites, and as expected, there's no simple way to just close your account and delete all your work. Instead you get a lot of weasel-words about 'deactivating' images, and at the end, a demand to "contact us" if you really just want to close. So I sent messages to support on both sites, requesting closure. I wonder how long this will end up taking.

I hope they will launch sciety 7 soon, with improved sales performance and a faster upload process.
Like I said earlier, we all had high hopes for Crated.com. They started out doing just about everything right; but the sales never showed up. Now they're sliding downhill, their standards have collapsed and they're flooded with junk. Wish I knew the inside story there.

I suspect a lot of their sales are to contributors themselves - people buying their own images on coffee cups and bags - and also to their friends and relatives. That might be why the upload process is impossibly slow; they really don't care about supporting people with a lot of images that will make only a very few sales over time.

There's a POD forum here on MSG where discussions like this usually happen.
FAA is the big one, I sell a few there. I have zero promotion of my own, any sales I get are though keyword search on the FAA site. FAA has serious problems and shortcomings, but IHMO all the other PODs are worse. FAA at least reads IPTC on upload and lets you set your own markup.
I tried Society6 but the upload process was so tedious and slow (they don't read IPTC), I decided not to bother. To make any sales on a POD you need hundreds of photos, and the time it would take to upload those numbers on S6 is just out of the question.
Many of us had high hopes for Crated.com but it seems to have gone nowhere. I never sell anything there, others do report a sale now and then.
You'll probably here from others in this thread with more optimistic views :-)

Apparently it showed up suddenly, with everyone "opted in" by default - there was a bit of kickback, and the default was changed to "opted out".
thanks. Back on computer. Didn't get an email bout this Acanvas deal - usually I get an email when FAA introduces some new 'product'. Did others get an informatory email? If not, as the original default was to be opted in, were they trying to sneak it past us?
Googling aCanvas UK gives me no results, so that's something else my US-sparse portfolio won't do well in. No-brainer for me.
I didn't get an email, I don't think anyone did. Next time we logged on we saw the announcement and found out we'd been opted in. So yes, it was announced but clearly the hope was that people wouldn't pay much attention and just stay 'in' by default. I expect only more of this sort of stuff from FAA and I'm actually sort of surprised we can still opt out. I'm really, really hoping for a serious competitor in 2017 because if FAA finally just morphs into Zazzle, I have no place to go. I have everything on Crated.com but never sell anything there.

I expected maybe a couple of "don't let the door hit you on the way out" posts but really, all these different opinions I'm seeing are fascinating.

Dropped Fotolia, Photodune and IS long ago. Oh and 500px, of course.
A recent thread here on MSG helped me decide to drop DT and SS. It made me aware that microstocks are licensing photos to people who just resell them as 'art' on Amazon. These days, my efforts go into prints, mainly through FAA. If I lose just one or two print sales to some sleazeball on Amazon, I lose more than I'd make on DT all year. So it's an easy decision at this point.

It's almost hard to believe this announcement is serious; it reads like an Onion story. Let's get real - $0.00005 per minute is indistinguishable from zero. In the very unlikely event that someone likes your image so much they keep it up on the display for an entire month, the contributor gets the staggering sum of $2.16.
It's not hard to imagine Sean Broihier (the guy behind FAA) laughing to himself as he wrote "That number looks very low, but it adds up quickly."
One very enthusiastic guy just posted on the FAA forum: "The payout rate is 7.2 cents per day. [...] This is a substantial payout. Sean did an excellent job negotiating for us. I think this is a great opportunity. " A contributor who left negative comments in response was warned, by an admin, to stop posting in the thread; they only want positive reaction.
Broihier is getting paid for "content" by the company selling these display panels, but we'll never know how much. He's offering his contributors basically nothing. So let's call this what it is: sucker bait.

I haven't submitted anything to microstock in a long time and will probably never do so again. With about 300 old images online, my expectations are pretty low these days. But I'm thinking about starting the new year by cleaning house.
In the last couple of months DT has completely dried up; I barely made enough in December to pay for a latte. Time to end it.
For SS it's been a year of out-of-control spamming, junk portfolios getting side-loaded without inspection (like those 30,000 photos of pot), crazy rejections wasting everyone's time, and steadily declining sales for individual contributors. I've been waiting for them to make some "exciting announcement" about a new giveaway or royalty cut, but at this point they're in such chaos they probably wouldn't even announce it. So I'll dump them too.
I was ready to give up on Alamy after months without a sale, but got one a few days ago that netted me $10. I really have nothing against them, so I'll leave my stuff there.
The wild card, once again, is GL stock images. I thought the new ownership might take it somewhere, and I got a couple of sales after the transition, but it went cold. Unsure about this one.
Bottom line, I'm dropping SS and DT on New Year's Day.

Funny how often this comes up...
I'm moving off of LR and will be needing a new way to edit keywords and other metadata. I've searched in the past and have always been surprised to find nothing really good for this purpose. The basic requirements never change: browse the images, view/edit/copy/paste metadata between them. If the program were really good, it would let me do things on groups, like add a single new keyword to a bunch of photos.
What I don't want is something like Irfanview - dated, clunky and hopelessly overgrown with features I don't need.
Something lightweight and focused on metadata and keywords.....?

No doubt it's allowed in a legal sense. And that all agencies are the same in this regard.
This makes make feel good about the fact that I stopped submitting to microstocks almost 2 years ago. Since then, I've tried to do photos I actually feel good about, and sell prints on a POD. I'm a small player with no advertising or promotion, but even so I now make a lot more that way than I do on the micros. And my print sales are increasing, while microstock is sinking.
So most of my best photos aren't on microsotock anyway, and won't be. And like I said, I'm thinking it's about time to pull the plug on these so-called "agencies" which, IMHO, are the furthest thing from being your "agent".
I've been waiting for the next 'exciting announcement' from SS so I could be dramatic about closing my account in response. But maybe it would just be a good way to start the new year.
