Shutterstock.com / Re: Rejected for Potentially Offensive
« on: May 17, 2013, 13:41 »
Just want to add that this seems to be a blow against anything original or meaningful in microstock.  Guess we should all stick to the same boring depictions of toothily smiling happy doctors and business people.   ::)

Yeah. Kind of sad. My thoughts exactly. I've especially been inclined towards a "mega" diversity: Not just skin color, but body size and religion. You'll see a series based on Henri Matisse's "Green Line" in my MP portfolio: http://www.mostphotos.com/theblackrhino/portfolio#q=muslim&lang&show=latest

A few years back in the U.S. we had a story going around that a man shot and killed a black youth because he was in a hoodie (oversimplified in the media, of course). So I made this one and a few firms rejected it for being "offensive." http://www.mostphotos.com/2966201/black-man-targeted

Keep in mind the biggest crimes in African-American communities is Black-on-Black crime. So this particular image was very relevant. However, that being said, I cannot say it has sold much.

This image of a woman behind a tall wall with barbed wire was inspired by the separation wall in Israel/Palestine. This too has been rejected by some firms as offensive: http://www.mostphotos.com/1276582/wailing-at-the-other-wall

On the other hand, I don't always seek controversy. I made this drawing of people at the movies. I think I included every ethnic and religious group in the worldincluding a space alien with his environmental suit! http://www.mostphotos.com/1932081/people-at-the-movies  8)

iStuck has rejected all of these images.  >:(

Ha! You got me there!  ;D

The first one represents racial discrimination. My parents were turned away and denied services because of my father's black skin..

Life would have been a whole lot simpler if mankind looked like penguins.  :)

The first one, I don't know what it's supposed to represent.  I don't get the second either.  You can't literally hang yourself as illustrated...  I don't care what the race of the guy is.

The first one represents racial discrimination. My parents were turned away and denied services because of my father's black skin (a United States Air Force chaplin refused to marry them in the 1960s). In the past, I've been turned away from places because of the color of my skin.

The second one is conceptualnot literal. It is a stressed out Arab or African man. Indeed, color of skin really has nothing to do with it. You can hang yourself with stress or worrying things. Hence, the worried man hanging himself. I made a darker skinned man because microstock sites in general lack diverse images.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. This has been quite a learning experience.

SS refused these images because they are "potentially offensive images."

So for those that might be offended by theseor think a buyer might be offendedplease help me understand. I think I know what is potentially offensive. But I am curious. Also, I'd like to know if you think they are worthy cartoons for me to submit. FYI, I'm a man of African descent.  8)

My goal of these is not to offend. Rather, to illustrate intolerance, hatred and the stress of many people around the world. From the Dalits of India to African-descended folk struggling for equality in America.

Adobe Stock / Re: 9 sales from same image at once
« on: May 16, 2013, 18:45 »
I had that happen to me over a year ago with one image there. Nervous buyer, I guess.

Yesterday I had 9 sales of the same image. It sold for 0,27 each and I got 9 e-mails so it sold at the same time. I thought someone must have clicked to many times on the buy button. But today I had the same with another image. Exactly 9 sales all at once for 0,27 each. They do push the images up but this must be a mistake right? Has anyone had this before at Fotolia?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Vector Royalty Rates Increasing
« on: May 16, 2013, 07:59 »
That dumb upload system they have at iStock is a big part of the problem why we can't get 5% of our vector 999 upload slots. I'm glad they'll pay us a little more. It's still not enough. It should be 50/50. Give the exclusives 60%. Just my opinion. I'm sure their rich bosses would hate it.

It's hard to interpret.
A few weeks ago, they made the bizarre and apparently illogical statement that very few vectorians were uploading to their limits, so they were removing the limits. It may be that that didn't bring in many more vectors, as would seem logical - if they weren't loading e.g. 20 a week (or whatever) it's not likely they would upload 999.
So since they clearly want more vectors (maybe as a result of market research), they had to up the payment.

I'm not sure the situation is the same for photos. A lot of indie photographers are able to fill their slots and have backlogs.

I suspect there would be less misunderstandings if they did a "few more minutes of extra cleanup" on the email before sending it. It's obviously "lacking visual impact and therefore not suitable" for us to take time out of the day to read it.  ;) ;)

Day 6 for me. I also included original drawings with the submission. I've been with SS for 3 years. So I'm not a new account.

Did the review time go up at SS this week?
Have some in the queue since Thu (?) last week or so.
Just would like to know if it just me  ;)

Thanks.

Corel Paintshop Pro is highly underrated. If they had a Mac version, I'd use it. I don't think Corel is crap. Also GIMP is highly sophisticated. These things are far from "cr-ap". I've been a big Adobe user since the early 1990s in college through professional work. However, once a person overcomes a slight learning curve, switching to a new application is easy. With a will, it can be done. Also, many 3rd party Photoshop plugins work in stand-alone format (Noise Ninja, etc.). A tweak to workflow and you'll be free of the Adobe handcuffs. After Adobe's jacked-up cloud announcement, I'm ready to make the transition away from themand tell all my customers and students about it. 8)

FYI, for those interested, there is ACDsee for mac. I'm going to experiment with a free trial: http://www.acdsee.com/en/products/acdsee-pro-3-mac

Adobe is playing with fire, a LOT of people will stick with CS6 forever, millions of others will stick to cracked versions.

The switch to the cloud model will be just about pushing small upgrades, maybe they'll integrate some 3rd party addons into PS but it's no big deal, i mean certainly no big deal for us, for designers it's another story they'll be locked forever into the CS Suite and i can't see any decent alternative around, this stuff is jus too complex to even dream about making a competitive product .. i hear people mentioning PixelMator, Corel, Gimp, GimpShop .. can't think a single professional would switch to that cr-ap.

Acdsee Pro 6 is a decent and better alternative to Bridge, but not even in the same league as Lightroom, Photo Mechanic great for news photographers, but for anything else hmmm ?

Wow! A good one. Crappy ending, however. Just for that, I'm not going to share it  :(

Well it had to happen... someone's done one of those Hitler spoof vids on the CC issue. I love these things:)

Adobe is a pack of greedy slobs.

Man, I don't like having to pay a subscription for software - I was on the "every other verision" with my Photoshop purchases.   I currently have PS 5 and was waiting until PS 7 for a possible upgrade.

I may think about changing my workflow.  Lightroom has become almost all of my workflow - as soon as they add perspective corrections to it, I might not need Photoshop for much anymore.

I also have a purchased copy of Illustrator, which I guess is going to be doing the same thing.  Guess that is the last Illustrator copy I will buy for a loooong time, as I am not enough of a vector artist to justify the subscription price.

I see answers there from photographers. And what about vector artists there? anyone has any experience with this site?

See my reply above. Very, very easy submission and average $15/month with 800+ images.

This all reminds me to start uploading to Toonvectors. I was accepted a few months ago.  :o

I just got a 100% rejected batch...is there a new criteria, process or standard for vector art now?

Outrageous.  >:( Resubmit.

Unlike Yaymicro, they don't give you an easy way to respond or give feedback. FT needs to get their act together. We are not their slaves.

375
Submit to as many as you can. I submit to almost 20. However, I'm an illustrator that doesn't have to take time with a bunch of model releases and paying staff/models/studio rental.

Hi, im new in the Stock Photo world, i was acepted as illustrator at SS a few weeks ago after 3 applications :)

I can see that almost everybody upload their work (pictures or illustrations) not only in one site, but also in different sites, but i really dont know if this is good or not, so can anybody tell me if this is the better choise to win more money?

Thank you in advance ;)
