Dreamstime.com / Re: DT Performance
« on: February 24, 2007, 03:52 »
Hi!

I think that DPI is also an indicator of the size of a site's user base. My DPI is 5+ and SS, 4+ on IS, but only 0.2+ on DT and FT. All four portfolios are the same age and have the same content.

Very nice! And it _nicely_ points out how you _can_ use DPI for comparison: By comparing portfolios of the same age. If you compare portfolios of the same age, DPI can indeed be a very useful measurement.
Provided you upload photos to the various sites at the same(or similar) time, then it is a good comparison.

THe metric I use is US$ per photo per month. (monthly income/ number of photos).  THis way I can compare month by month across sites and with the same site.  It is fairly constant.  This however favous sites that reject lower selling shots and only accept higher selling shots  so sites like featurepics that accept everything are at a disadvantage.  Thinking out loud now, on that basis, $ per month is a better indicator.  Which is the simplist but cant be compared against others.

I dont think they hand selected the photo (well at least not the photog).

This guy has only 23 photos up and 0 DL :o :o :o.  I bet this will go up as designers go for the buyers prize.

You guys perhaps interpreted my post to mean you were a poor photographer?
I guess we interpreted what * wind" means (having neveer heard of it before).

As per my post above, due to the unknown time factor, I dont think DPI is a helpful measure.  it needs some time element to it such as IS DL/month (which is on a per image basis).  So maybe a "DPI for the past month"???

In my opinion, if your DPI is below 3.5, then your * wind" and need to explore
why it's so low.
No wonder you have been banded from this site once already.

DPI is a fucntion of time you have been on the site.  Lets take the extreme example of 1 image in the portfolio.  I I uplaoded it 3 years ago, I would expect it to be a lot higher than 5,  if I downloaded it yesterday, I would be lucky to have even one. You have been on the site for 2.5 years which means that some of your photos have 2.5 years expsoure where the 13 you uploaded this month only have 1 months exposure.  You cant even compare people with similar join dates.  One person could dump in 1000 photos in their first month whereas the second could upload the 1000 over the course of a year or two.

no full size sensor, no sense in an upgrade

Ummmm.... what does the size of the sensor have to do with it?

lens conversion. costs heaps to get wide angles

Lens conversion - makes long lens longer  ;D ;D

123rf has kicked them out of my top 6 and I think BS is doing better too.

With the Getty/Corbis merger (if it goes ahead) I think their future is a bit uncertain.

The thing with Flickr is that is pretty hard to underprice a micro site.  So why go to Flickr which haven't been quality controled/ various sizes/no model release, noise when you can go to SS, IS ... and get for $1.

Does anyone here think that the live preview function will be useful?
For sports phototags that have a remote set up (ie. behind the goal) it will also help them set up (rather than take photo and check) (At the world cup, they have about 20 cameras on tiny 5 inch tripods, all remote controlled.

Also for Jornos taking above the head shots.

For Macro as noted. Plus tripod shots where view finder isn't accessable.

I think you can zoom in on the live preview.

I agree about the weather sealing. While Canon as well as Nikon make good, weather sealed bodies,
Unfortunately only in Canons 1D series.  As Ametures have to stay inside when it rains.

one up for the 4/3 guys I guess.

The difference between 10 and 12MP is totally unimportant.
is the difference between 8mp and 10mp also unimportant?  If so, what didn't the have before: speed, quality or resolution?

And for travelling, I have the Olympus E-1. Compact, solid, weather sealed body and lenses, excellent image quality and very good ergonomics (much better than Canon in that respect).
I dont think this was out when I "invested" in canon.

Since when has "the stig" been into photography:

Google searches often come up with LO links in the first page now - that is building traffic by itself.
Are people who search Google actually looking to BUY photos though?

Agree it is the easist to upload to if you have all the IPTC done.

If canon now has 4 stop IS technology (in there 70-200 f4L IS), why arn't they rolling this out across the board.

Note: I want the 100-400 L so was hoping they would upgrade the IS to 4 stop (from 2) and upgrade the weather proofing (to lose its name "the dust pump").

photographers will no longer need to trade off resolution, image quality, and speed against each other.
Are they saying that 10mp is enough?  isn't the 5D 12mp?  therefore aren't you trading off the 12mp of the 5D for the speed of the 1D.  I thought they were going to bring out a 22mp one as well.

Agree this looks like a well rounded camera and very tempting.  I just want it in a smaller lighter body since my main use is travel.

What . have they been doing the last 6 months.

One camera, one lens (which replaces a lens that is already extremely high rated with no new features) and a new flash.

Maybe everything else is so good it cant be improved  ;D ???

368
no IS?  Is this any different to the existing lens of similar spec?

General Macrostock / Re: Getty and Jupiter Merging?
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:46 »
Was thinking of this overnight.  If the merger goes ahead.  Getty will slowly kill it off.  You cant have premium (istock) and other (StockXpert) at the same price point especially when one gives them 80% and the other only 50%.  They cant even merge as the photos wont be upto the image standard of istock.

StockXpert is dead within 2 years if this goes ahead.

What is with the live view.  Would have though that was more of a consumer rather than pro feature.  Can see plenty of applications for pros though.

Will be interesting to see what happens to the 30D successor.

371
To some extent but you cant get infinite DoF and when you are that close, the DoF gets narrower, even if you use a very low apeture (high number).

Leaf,

Just updated my McAffee and there is a new site advisor.

This site comes up orange (warning).  You might want to address.  I think they give you the chance to comment but probably best to not have an orange light for newbies to the site.

They might be buying them in a corporate raider capacity: buy the company, take any pieces that they can use (e.g., technology), and then kill the competition.
More likely to run the libraries with their existing staff.  Expect to see a few staff layoffs, get rid of corporate head office will show efficiencies.

Given that they would be paying goodwill for the name, they are unlikely to kill it off, just run it side by side.

374
Ok - agree in part but in this situation, SS should at least tell snem who it was that bought the image.  This could eliminate the person or identify who Snem should contact.

If the agencies dont provide any information, we cant even start to pursue.

375
I shoot raw.  If nothing else, I can convert in DPP to have the exact out of the camera look, but with the option now or in the future to do more.
