Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: How to fix your Menu
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:43 »
You can just rename your page "Home" to sth. like "Hitvectors by Chico". Not sure, though, if you can leave title empty...

Thanks, Pilens, but what is "sth"?  :o

something  ;D

Glad it worked for you. And now we know we can leave title field empty, indeed. Great.

Related images, cool feature. I like it.  :)

Just wondering...  what "related" exactly means here: I open the image page of "sand dunes in Death Valley" and I see ... a "Jellyfish"! ;D

Mind you, I have only 10 processed images in total. So there isn't much choice for really related images.

Yes, "contact us" without link is much better than e-mail. Hopefully, it'll work without flaws and no buyer will ever need to contact anyone to resolve cart issues, anyway.  :)

380
It will always come up on returning from paypal. I don't think the customer will mind if it doesn't apply to them. Much better than leaving them in confusion.

it's looking cool anyway.. the only thing I don't like is that the email address is exposed.. it's better leaving it at "notify us" I believe.. I prefer not to publish the email.. there is the contact page if they need..

Agree, it looks cool, and agree again, a link to contact page would be better.

OK, here's what I found:

on tab Tweaks
under Server Tweaks
Option Protect Files  must be unchecked. This caused derailing of registration

under Other Tweaks
(same tab)
Option Remove WordPress Login Error Messages, if checked, causes the empty pink box. That one at least is pretty obvious.

I have both options unchecked now and registration seems to work as intended.

However, some links in the password e-mail seem to wrong/misconfigured:

  • The header "Welcome to..." links doesn't work. It points to \[url\]*
  • The Login Page doesn't point to the login page but links to the license agreement page

Can that be customized somewhere in the SY theme?

when something overly funky happens in the world of wordpress (that everyone else isn't experiencing) the first thing they tell you to do is deactivate all plugins and turn them on one-by-one till the problem comes back - then you found the clashing plugin.

Let me experiment a bit and see if the problem exists on my end.

That's good advise. Found that the "Better WP Security" plugin screwed my registration.

My question now is: which of its zillion setting caused my trouble? Or is it the plugin as is, no matter what the setting are? sigh... - I see what I can find and report back.

383
Thats a strange problem nobody has mentioned.

Firstly do you have any plugins installed which might interfere?

Do you have "anyone can register" with default roles being "subscribers" ?

Yes, "anyone can register" with default roles being "subscribers" is set.

Don't know about interfering plugins. I don't see anything suspicious. Do you?

I checked registration and seem to have a problem, too. I can register, but the e-mail with password never arrives. Check spam folder, too. Nothing.

When I try to login using just something as password, I get this (missing text in pink box):

I checked out your site again. Now your translator button works great. I wonder what it was the first time. Maybe a Firefox hickup at my end ? Don't know...

I checked the quality of the German translation: It is not bad. Sure, you still notice it is machine translated but I've seen much worse.

Useful button/function. I want it, too. But I don't want to fool with coding it in every time I update my site. So far I had not much luck with the child theme apart from styles.css. But I am a bloody beginner with wp and php. So that doesn't mean too much.

If there's enough interest maybe Leo could include the button as an option.

Seems an earlier post from me got lost  :o

I was confirming that I found the backup function on my Bluehost cpanel. It creates daily/weekly/monthly backups automatically. You can download the full backup files and you have many options (too many to list) for downloading partial backup. Some of these option are only available after a $12.95/year upgrade. Is it worth the extra $s?

Restore is similar just reverse. Some options for partial restores need that paid upgrade.

Justhost - which I believe is part of the Bluehost family does automatic backups daily, weekly and monthly and you can use these to do a total back up (as I did the other day when I REALLY managed to muck WP and Symbiostock up.  They also charge an annual fee if youwant to be able to retrieve certain files from your backups rather than everything.  If I wanted to back up to my computer/hard disk I imagine like most of you I would need a LOT of time and more hard drives.

Yeah, you are right once there are thousands of images online on my site I don't think I wanna download a full backup every time I do a change either.

I am in Canada, use Firefox, click on the German flag and... nothing happens :(

388
One recent case (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/why-does-a-backup-of-my-site-from-4-11-13-not-have-images) of lost images that have been uploaded and were already processed made me thinking. There wasn't sufficient backup on the side of the host to restore the site and the images. It doesn't matter how it happened, we all know s..t happens. So what should the smart Symbiostock Webmaster  ;D do to be prepared when bad luck strikes?

I will backup my wp database in cpanel and ftp the db file and whole wp root to my computer just before I do major changes. If disaster strikes I'd ftp everything back and restore the dp from file. After that my site would run as before those major changes failed. Right?

What a nice surprise, Leo!  :D Just super  8)!!!

Seems to work perfect resizing my Firefox window. :) Don't have tablet/smartphone to test  :(.

390
Don't know for sure but this might be caused by too restrictive php.ini settings. It has been discussed all over the Symbiostock threads. Search for it and you'll get more tips for settings to try than you'll probably like  ;)

I forgot to say what it was   ::)   A translator - prompted by the different countries that are finding me via google

Hmm, interesting. But how does this work? When I click on a flag nothing happens...

392
Doesn't gumroad.com charge a cut of 5% + $.25 per transaction?

So 100 sales at $.99 earn you $69 and 10 sales at $10 earn you $92.50 after their cut is taken out. ???

I guess, I don't understand "why?" either...  ;D

393

... Time for some wine!

+1

Cheers!

Hope the reinstall works out for you. Some days would turn out being more productive by staying in bed all day napping  ;D It happens, I know...

What exactly did you do to crash your site?

395
That indicates processing your images totally failed. I really wonder if limitations in your ini.php are causing this...

396
No, the images don't go into the database. Just references where to find them.

Hmm, seems your wp reinstall is still acting up. Can you find any thumbs of the processed images in wp media library?

397
I completely understand your frustration.

That sounds weird. Are you sure they aren't talking about just a backup of your wp database? What hosting company are you with?

Did you check if your ini.php settings are what you had before this happened? I mean there must be something wrong with that backup if files are missing. So I guess anything is possible  :(
You might be better off installing your site new from a clean wp installation.

398
So Let's see if I have this right.

I work hard on SEO to get people to my site.  Then when they are there, the search will not allow them to find the images that I hope to sell?

Does anyone see a problem with this?

Are people hand coding search terms?

That might be the current status for searching keyword phrases. And it would be a problem if it persists.

But Leo has this high up on his priority list. So, why not being a little patient while working hard on your site?

399
New feature with FAA: integration of your FAA stuff via iframe. Got the code line from FAA, installed the Wordpress plugin "iframe", created a page "Prints", pasted the code (and had to remodel it bit according to iframe-plugin syntax), added that page to my main menu, and here's the result:

http://www.imagoborealis.com/prints/

Pretty  8), isn't it? - What do you think?

good stuff pilens..

btw, don't get me wrong but your logo makes my eyes hurt  :D

like it's from 1998.. it's just that as a designer I can't stand bad logos.. you don't have to have a logo designed, but you would be better off picking a plain font and just use that..

Thanks cidepix. I understand you want to help. I appreciate that.  8)

Guess I am not much of a designer ???  - Good to know my logo needs work. I'll try again.

I just hope my photography sucks less  ;D

When I heard about this new massive attack this morning  >:( I installed a wordpress security plugin called Better WP Security. It guided me nicely through all the various aspects and think-abouts of general hosting and specific wordpress security. So far it seems to work flawless with wordpress and our beloved SY theme.  8)

Now I hope that's enough of a defense against those hackers  :-\
