Having given the matter further thought, I don't agree this can be reduced to the basic statement that we were overpaid and therefore should be expected to hand the money back - especially in the absence of any transaction detail behind the numbers. This is not like being overpaid by your employer or your bank. As businesses we produce, incurring costs as a result, which are covered by our income in the form of royalties from our agent. If the agent overpays us there is a case for "recoupment." However, in the interim our businesses have also incurred costs in monitoring the situation, adjusting our tax returns, setting money aside, requesting further information etc, etc.
Therefore, as with most errors in business relationships it is not unreasonable to expect some degree of mutual write off of said expenses in the interest of continued good relations. It happens every day.

I'm pleased that after removing all my best images, I don't earn much with istock now and the amount they're taking back isn't too big. Can't imagine how bad this must be for the big earners there. I wonder how much they will be taking back from Yuri? They should at least give people some compensation for their enormous blunder but that's not how they operate.
Compensation? It would be a nice gesture to say forget about 25-50% of the commission grab for those who are over and above writing off the sub $10 - by way of saying "we cocked up, sorry, so we will take a larger share of the burden". Unfortunately, the bean counters who make these decisions are the sort of people who would stop standing still in the middle of the Pamplona Bull Run to pick up an old penny.

I always thought they couldn't fix all the bugs they are aware of because the computer code was fiendishly complicated, but if the GM can be aware of the Valentine's picture issue and can't be bothered to pick up a phone and tell someone to drop an Easter picture and text into that slot, then maybe the problem is ineffectual leadership and a command structure that is so rigid and moribund that it is incapable of even deciding to wipe its own bottom when the need arises.
In the western economy companies I've worked for or with, it is not considered wise to tell other departments or employees they are useless or what to do on their manor. Mostly this is not about company policy or even good diplomacy but down to the fear that if you do say something the problem ends up in your in tray. Too often senior managers use words like "empowering" their people to do their jobs properly when what they really need is the hairdryer treatment and a swift kick up the arse as they leave the room.

I think the thing to be constructively asking for is a better system of reporting from now on. That makes much more sense than people venting. A constructive conversation is better than an angry stand off.
Sounds reasonable and no less than what we should expect. I'm also accepting of the belief this whole debacle is the result of complete incompetence as opposed to piracy. I'm also not that vexed over the amount since I was expecting it, or thereabouts based on past earnings and had made some provision. What continues to churn my milk is the total absence of an apology - or anyone other than the forum monkeys bothering to communicate the way forward with the contributor base.

I was going to hammer my keyboard to smithereens with a strong retort this morning but what is the point - when it is seemingly beneath their top suits to even put their name on the smarmy email they sent out, let alone a sincere and well deserved apology.
I imagine if this were shareholders being nailed for a dividend "irregularity" it would be on Bloomberg by now.

"In Due Course" they said on the forum - which I'm reliably informed is their new mission statement, having received the most votes after a three day workshop attended by their most talented people.
Other suggestions from an intense brainstorming focus group that were not deemed as "impactful" or "sustainable" included "all in good time" and "as and when."

You either deal with the market as it is or you go and do something else. Whining about the good old days or blathering on about a business model you do not like or cannot change is a waste of energy.
Besides which, the majority don't care since they probably have day jobs or enjoy additional revenue streams from other ventures they are constantly moving to and from - as they grow or decline.

I'm very pleased that nobody has said "woot!"....which they used to say at that other place all the time.
All I need now to make my joy complete is for Laurin to pipe up over on SS with "how about a raise?"

Marketing hype is always a pathetic read and exploitative no matter what anyone says.
Besides, the whole idea has been nicked from documentary/art photographers....Rineke Dijkstra, Nan Goldin and Alec Soth amongst many others.

Has anyone heard anything regarding the clawbacks? I hate to have an umbrella of debt floating over me for a duration that IS decides is in their best interest and for an unknown amount.
No mate. Their accountant is in hospital after licking his pencil once too often.

Looking at the latest images it seems that DT has relaxed their similars policy. Have you tried submitting multiple takes from your photo sessions lately? http://www.dreamstime.com/new-stock-photos-images
Thanks for the tip.... just took a peek and after looking at three pages of bugs either dead or having sex, plus various images of squished animals I'm prepared to take my hat off to the reviewers.

I'd like to increase downloads but DT won't let me. As a consequence of their arbitrary "similars" policy and the latest one "Image subject is too specific or niche-oriented" my port there has about 45% fewer images than at SS/IS and others.
Earnings have increased YOY but significantly less so than elsewhere, putting DT in 5th place on my income scale and in danger of losing that position. But that's my story and it seems everyone has a different take. I will continue to submit as and when - but they have ceased to be a priority in my workflow.

Hmmm. A few sentences later your man is agreeing with the suggestion that SS should "tighten up on similars" thereby wiping out 50% of his own port.
Nothing personal but I read his posts for amusement....not business insight

Storyboard ideas and setups in thumbnail sketches in a notebook - that way you always have a stock of ideas to be getting on with, especially useful to fall back on when your creativity is at a low ebb.

Hi!
$ has been losing recently to EURO and other European currencies. A question to fellow European contributors - How do you handle this problem? Do you exchange your dollars on Paypal as soon as a payment arrives, or do you wait for better times to make an exchange (then your are not only a stock photographer but also a broker ! ) ?
Not to mention that Paypal steals takes 2,5% from the currency exchange....
Michal
.... Much safer than leaving it with Paypal and any interest accrued is all mine.
Thats interesting. My bank account was emptied last week. 830 euros stolen in fraudulent payments. Probably because of the Adobe fiasco. If I had left my earnings on my PP account, I still would have the money
Yikes. Three years ago my Paypal account was emptied of $600 in fraudulent payments to some chap in Taiwan....Keeping your lolly in an old sock under the mattress might be the safest option after all. PS. To their credit Paypal acted swiftly and I was reimbursed

It looks like a practical option for street/event work but for me it falls into the "nice to have" rather than "must have" category where my expenditure is concerned.
I wish you luck though....and I do think you have a potential market in those urban tykes like my niece, who yomp all over London using DSLRs and CSCs for street work.

I transfer the payment to my bank account asap. Much safer than leaving it with Paypal and any interest accrued is all mine. Minor fluctuations in currency are unavoidable and since I'm not dealing with five figure numbers just yet I'm not that worried. It will all be in Yen soon the way things are going.

Because "tack sharp" is a selling point to your client whereas "by the way, some of my work may not be sharp at 100%" is definitely not.
As soon as you allow any hint of downside into your product, even if in your opinion the client doesn't really need that feature, you are opening the door for the next guy who will use it to close the sale. The same rules apply to photography as apply to widgets and thingamajigs.

The figure is still a grease spot on a global digital scale and whether it hurts your bottom line depends on what you continue to shoot IMO. To put it in context see how many images there are behind these keywords:
Woman Headset - 400k Apple Isolated - 1.3m Beautiful Woman Portrait - 2m green grass blue sky - 2.67m
If you're still knocking out any of the above (and there are some ports chock full of this stuff) it might account for your current perturbation.

I see demand growing as the use of mobile devices accelerates and even the smallest of companies/organizations understand the need to establish a marketing presence in that arena - using imagery that gets the message across without volumes of text.
BTW I got this from my 18 year old niece and her peers. I'm sure you've all seen it for yourselves - they get all their news/gossip/culture and even education from mobile devices and they practically live on them and by them.
Also, 'tis about time the agencies got off their arses and broke the emerging markets - they can't all be getting their stuff via domestic outlets or piracy surely.
