Illustration - General / Re: Best selling VECTOR sites?

^^  :o
Real classy... calling out anothers work. But the jokes on you.
If you actually had any eye for talent, you would be able to clearly tell that helix7's stuff that you posted is far superior than the shown items in your library. 8 years as a reviewer and you still cant tell quality?

Its ok, some people are slow learners and dont know that they dont know. ;)

Software - General / Re: Chrome
« on: June 19, 2011, 17:25 »
ive switched to chrome recently because firefox kept crashing on me and i got fed up with it. So far no complaints here. I like the fact i just type in anything i want to search right on the address bar.

So a couple of weeks into it with Zazzle I've got just 1 sale, a small button that netted me $0.15. So I'm still very skeptical that I can make any decent amount of money with the site, but I'll give it time. Based on low numbers of views, though, and just a single small sale, I'm not inclined to put too much time into this.

man i so wanted to hear a success story from you. no traffic is what stopped me from investing more time into my shop 2 years ago. I was hoping it was different this time around with the possibility of many more buyers. I think in order to succeed you have to drive most of the traffic yourself which seems pretty hard to do.

your screename is offensive ;D hahah kidding.
on the other hand, if my screen name was American, it would offend people in here  ;)

Kidding aside, I saw Jackass 3d a couple of months ago and altho i was laughing my ass off at times, some scenes really wanted to make me throw up. There is a limit to me what should be shown and what shouldnt. After a certain point, it doesnt do the mind any good to have certain things swirling around and rotting inside it. Just my point of view.

Just imagine if there might be intelligence somewhere else that had a head start of lets say 500 million years. What part of the evolutionary ladder would they be at right now?

Judging by the way our society's heading I'm thinking somewhere in the basement?

Are we assuming intelligent life will behave/evolve the same way as us?

anyone know anyone that works at google??? I know the employees can devote one day a week to a project they choose to work on. Someone whisper into their ears about creating  something that will benefit the artists and provide an alternative to the agencies! Those geeks can think something up!!!

I think actually some illustrators at iStock who are doing very well as exclusives would get disappointed as non-exclusives. Some of the illustrations I see are made in a special iStock-"style" that is unique to the site, but those blue flames could easily drown and never make it when uploaded to the other sites, especially this late. At Fotolia for instance, it appears they're not giving any attention to new uploads at the moment.

One of the reasons i hesitate to drop the crown is placement of my bestsellers. These vector files generate anywhere from $1k-$2k a year each for me. I expect them to keep generating for me for at least another 2 more years with minimal loss. Competition seems pretty fierce elsewhere and Im almost afraid they will get lost in the mix. If these files stopped generating for me, the decision would be so much easier.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Google Images Drag and Drop

im just curious if google stores the image you drag to the search area somewhere. I would hope not but worry that it is being added to their database somehow.

"believe silly ufo"

I tend to think we're not the only life forms on one planet in this vast universe. religion aside, if there are millions of years since time began, we as a race barely scratch the surface when it comes to being in existence. Just imagine if there might be intelligence somewhere else that had a head start of lets say 500 million years. What part of the evolutionary ladder would they be at right now? Considering the vast amount of change within our last hundred years, its kind of scary to think what will be possible in the next 100 years for us.

Edited to say that i believe that there are a lot of bogus and silly ufo sightings that are clearly fake...

thanks for the post! this is really cool...

hey... you are fast to predict :)

im not predicting.. im observing  ;)

I really should have clarified that the majority of my portfolio is vectors. So all these collections are taking more slots up in the front pages and i see less and less vectors on it.
Im sure someone is going to jump in here and say there are tons of vectors up in front of searches but these vectors are super sellers and they defy the normal best match in my view.

I don't think there is a "normal" to the best match. :)

The new normal to the best match is more money for getty.

388
I'm sure there are quite a lot of exclusives that are doing really well.  If you have a portfolio that works with istock, it's an option.  Mine has always done much better on the other sites.

I don't think there would still be so many exclusives if they really thought they were losing out.  It's also going to be really hard to submit a portfolio from scratch with the big independent sites.  They reject much more than they used to.

I would really like to hear stories of anyone doing better after sept 2010. Even with vetta heavy portfolios which translates to less downloads per file.

My point is that majority of contributors lose out no matter what with every new collection added. lets say my portfolio as a whole gets 100 views a day. vetta photo collection comes in. now i only get 90 views a day. then agency comes in... 80 views a day. vetta vectors, vetta video, editorial... all getty content being moved over... now i get maybe 60 views a day. add in buyer loss and there you go with everyone complaining about less downloads and only the relative noobs in the game hooraying for their double digit download numbers a month.

It just seems like that has been the case with me anyways. Add to that the discontented buyers leaving with every new "collection" stuffed at the front. It really seems like Getty content before istock content now.

While i tend to agree her work really isnt micro, there is a huge benefit for her work to be displayed on istock. My portfolio on istock generates a lot of custom work and i bet she is doing quite well on commissioned work alone from her works being showcased there. I would call a lot of her images art  because of all the planning and effort put in after the shutter clicked. Plus, it really helps to be beautiful in this image conscious world.

Not to sound too negative but I feel all these fair companies have one thing in common. lack of buyers.

I'm still a skeptic. I have a hard time believing that I can make any money selling print-on-demand iphone cases and buttons. But I'm willing to give it a try. A real try this time and not just the couple of stamp designs I had up there before.

Here we go... http://www.zazzle.com/emberstock

We'll see what happens...

good stuff... keep us posted. i think your swirls will sell.

394
Thanks!  I think your style is suited to Zazzle very much... now you just have to select which of your stuff, and create new stuff, that appeals to consumers (its a totally different market than microstock), and once you have a pulse on that, your sales take off.

Alright, you've talked me into it. I'm putting a few designs up there in iPhone and iPad products. We'll see what happens.

This has seriously intrigued me to... it looks like i have to log onto my zazzle account i opened up 3 yrs ago. I think the potential is there for the ipads and the iphones

So I have a question for the ones who voted that shutterstock was right to terminate the account:
Why did you vote so?

contributors are like cockaroaches.  ;) too * many. if u have to use a filter, its a pretty good indicator your not even worth a second look to an agency that is predominantly subscriptions based.

396
$5 bet that the RC targets will be lowered  ;D

they will spin the message into them being the nice guys and want to give back more money to the contributors without having to admit the blatant fact that the company is selling less files due to less buyers this year than previous.

If they dont lower RC targets, they would be acting like the istock we all come to know as of late.

GLStock / Re: GraphicLeftovers - any good news?
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:03 »
I think GL is one of the best looking sites out there.

Thank you. But just wait, more things are coming. That's all I'm saying. My lips are now sealed  ;)

One new thing that came was that they deleted some 400+ of my images (out of 500+) with this mail:

"We continue here at Graphic Leftovers with our site grooming which is designed to clear the image database of intellectual property issues. Images may be removed from your portfolio that range in subject from vehicles to consumer electronics to recognizable persons.
Because of the changing landscape of intellectual property issues, we need to do our best to assure Creative Content that is "Safe" for Buyers to use for any purpose including their advertising work. Redundant content or content which we feel does not meet today's competitive quality standards will also be removed.
We are sorry to say but many images were deleted due to the following:
1. Out of focus, dirt on surfaces, dirty or dented backgrounds
2. Poor photoshop editing - isolations
3. Poor lighting
4. Photos of hotels and other properties we cannot take
5. Poor photo images with high grain, out of focus or lighting issues
6. Simple or low commercial value images
In the future, please submit only your best work".

Me, stupid: I was sure I have to submit only my worst.
Never submitted copyrighted images (or they reject it first time I submit). And, like I've said to them, if I submitted OOF, poor edited, poor lighted images, why did they accept them?
Other thing I'd like is a little education and a little less arrogance: you know, things like "Hello", "Regards" and stuff like that.
I'd really, really like that sites like this one, who have the presumption to be fair with the contributors, would consider contributors collaborators and not annoying botherers.

Looks like they are finally tightening up control of intellectual property and copyrighted works. I mentioned this last year how they had so many files with copyright infrigement issues that i couldnt take this site seriously. Maybe they are starting to get real buyer traffic. I also mentioned that Graphicleftovers as a company name makes me feel like im shopping in the bargain bin/the throw away aisle/hobby central...

Bigstock.com / Re: Vector files at BigStock too dark?
« on: May 24, 2011, 22:30 »
wow... BS makes them look so bad... you should bring this matter up with BS

On another note, nice job on those illustrations. I couldnt help compare your dls and view count you got from istock on that file as oppose to GL which goes to show the difference in the amount of buyers on each site. If you had gotten dls from GL, is there a big price difference from your take?

Shutterstock.com / Re: shutterstock account terminated
« on: May 19, 2011, 11:56 »
look at it from an agency point of view. how much value does this portfolio bring to the agency. I am betting any mediocre portfolio these days would be terminated in an instant due to oversupply.
So for all the hobbyists out there. dont take shortcuts. hard work pays off

Everybody should be treated the same when it comes to legal issues.

i bolded it for emphasis. reality doesnt work like that. ideally yes, everybody should be treated the same. Just like all babies should be cute.

I thoughtt SS has the right to terminate anyones contract if they feel theres a breach of contract. i dont think theres any legal issue here.
