Informing influential photo blogs is a good idea too - places like Photo District News etc. are always looking for ways to generate traffic.

Changing user icons to a common protest version has worked in the past.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Google giving photos away free for commercial use and iStock agrees« on: January 11, 2013, 13:01 »I think that they will simply say that they negotiated a 'special' license with Google, acting as our agent/distributor. The low price of $60 per image was discounted due to the high volume of 6000 image licenses being bought. Total price was $360K with $60K being given to contributors and Getty pocketing the other $300K. I think it was that deliberate and nothing to do with 'promotion' of either Getty or the artists. I think this is the truth of the situation that will be covered in corporate goo when it's served up. 455
iStockPhoto.com / Re: It's not just best match, the whole shebang is going belly up.« on: January 10, 2013, 07:58 »Recent acceptances presumably haven't chosen only 'city' and that hasn't been picked up on acceptance (where is Keywordzilla - one person has 20+ recent images of Singapore badly DAd so all of their images show up in a search for the MMA and for 'Central Scotland'; and older images have fallen foul of theKeywords team adding MMA long after the file was accepted just with 'Metropolitan'. As someone who uploads pictures of Scotland and Singapore, I'm betting that's an incorrect disambiguation of Central or Central Business District or CBD - as the skyscraper downtown area in Singapore is called. Probably not deliberate keyword spamming, just a mistaken ticking. (It wasn't me by the way!) 456
iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock's Alexa Rank continues to drop« on: January 09, 2013, 13:10 »... am already accepted ( but with my portfolio locked) at the main alternative site. So you've been able to upload your portfolio to SS, keyworded and ready to go without activating it, is that right? That's a huge time saver if that's possible for exclusive artists looking to jump from iStock if that's possible. 457
General Stock Discussion / Re: Interiors of churches - PR or editorial?« on: January 05, 2013, 06:58 »
I think it depends on the agency. iStock allows unreleased interiors of public places such as airports or churches providing they're not restricted by that location's photographic policy (like the Vatican).

General Stock Discussion / Getty's photographers are no happier than iStock's« on: December 23, 2012, 05:49 »
Rather disgruntled blog post about search, E+ and falling sales.
I think we're mistaken to blame each other, we need to campaign for more realistic royalty percentages. http://blog.johnlund.com/2012/12/getty-image-search-and-participation.html 460
iStockPhoto.com / Re: E+ Sales on Getty - very nice...« on: December 20, 2012, 12:00 »E+ for whatever reason, is being allowed to dominate the search results on the Getty site. That would be the reason you are doing well there. But believe me, this hardly goes unnoticed by regular Getty contributors who would like to know why this is being allowed. Getty has a lot hungry mouths to feed and most aren't passive bystanders. Getty for whatever reason, is being allowed to dominate the search results on the iStock site. General Photography Discussion / Re: Hand Held - Slowest Settings Possible« on: December 19, 2012, 03:10 »
Joe is right, it's all about the sensor size and pixel density nowadays. I prefer at least 1/250 at the longer end of my 24-70 with a D800 to ensure no visible camera shake. VR is a life saver at longer focal lengths. I too am amazed what a difference a tripod and mirror lock-up makes to the sharpness of a picture, even if it's not always practical.
I would say three times the focal length should be the new rule of thumb with high MP cameras. 462

This blog examines the different way libraries accept, use and interpret keywords, it's a gold mine of information for those of us who are preparing to jump from the sinking iStock ship:

iStockPhoto.com / Re: The Fall Of An Empire« on: December 13, 2012, 16:21 »Yes, you can include it and it works fine, mostly, out of the box. You'll be limited a bit if you can't program a little and have lots of time to fiddle. Also the existing management options and controls can be confusing. The day I have to worry about bandwidth because thousands of people are looking at and buying my images will be a day I don't have to worry about the extra charges! 465
iStockPhoto.com / Re: The Fall Of An Empire« on: December 13, 2012, 15:30 »No business grows forever. Take Tesco for example. Until recently they were so successful that 1 in every 8 spent by UK consumers was spent with them. Where do they go from there? Can they get to 1 in every 1? Of course not. They've tried to expand into the US but had to retreat in embarassing defeat. Just been to Shanghai and shot Chinese consumers pushing Tesco trolleys full to the brim out of Tesco's. There's no stopping them. 466
iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock is making a change to Best Match tonight.« on: December 12, 2012, 07:15 »The whole best match debacle is a red herring. I've been saying this for ages, but it's a simple thing for people to understand and the company can make changes without actually having to pony up any cash so it's very attractive for both sides to focus on it. More buyers and better royalties are what's needed more than anything else. If artists lobbied harder for those things we might be able to make this business sustainable. 467

Same here, fewer sales than before. best match is not the problem, advertising and marketing is.

You can't fault the inspections on iStock, no matter what else is wrong with the site.
I find rapid inspection a bit unnerving for some reason. It's like they're waiting to pounce! 473

73 might be pushing it a bit, but I've just come back from climbing Tharpu Chuli in the Annapurnas and one expedition member was 69 - hard as nails!
He did have to get up for the toilet at night quite a lot though... 474
Microstock GTG / Workshops / Events / Re: Everest Base Camp photography trek Nepal April 2013« on: December 07, 2012, 01:52 »Just a remark, is it worth to sell such specialized images in micros? I'm not sure they're so specialised any more. I sell several a day usually, probably because buyers want pictures of pristine natural environments and snow capped mountains rather than the actual location I expect, but still, they do sell. Outdoor activity images also sell well. 475

Amazingly (or horrifyingly, depending on your point of view) you could blog all the way up. There's phone reception pretty much all along the Khumbu nowadays and massive solar powered cell tower at Gorak Shep above base camp that nobody likes to talk about. Last time I was there, there were yaks sleeping under the solar panels...
