« on: August 20, 2008, 03:30 »
I donated several photos, and they got some downloads, while one photo was grabbed 43 times. I did not notice any influence on my regular sales, though. Even the file, which got grabbed 43 time did not sell a single copy!

Shutterstock.com / Re: New Logo?
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:21 »
On SS forums they have a thread about it as well: http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44431
I posted there yesterday that I was not impressed with the new logo, saying that when I logged in on SS the first time this logo was around, I first thought that I by mistake got to the stock site with Dreams in its name. I also said that the new logo does not say anything to me, which concerns either stock or photography or both. Oh, and I did mention that I liked the old logo.

When I checked the forum today, the post was deleted. Oh, well...

However, the point remains - the colour scheme and the roundness are too close to DT's logo

Velkommen til MSGroup :)

Unless you plan on becoming exclusive at IS, I'd say you should try uploading to the Big 6 and a couple of smaller sites as well.

I too experienced a significant slow-down at IS - 23 DL in May, 6 in June, 2 in July, so far 5 in August. At the same time I had 29 sales in three weeks of July at SS (being new there helps, but still...) and so far 10 in August.

I think your current images would do well at other sites. You can upload straight away to 123RF, DT and Fotolia, but SS can be a challange - it took me 4 attempts to get in, others had even more trouble, but it's worth it in the end.

Yaymicro / Re: Cannot make the sales graph at Yay work
« on: August 13, 2008, 05:14 »
Well, I had 2 sales in the whole July at iStock (and 4 in June), but that is no reason to close my account there. I would advise to wait and see until Yay had time to spread its wings.
On the other hand, if you quit your account, I will get less competition... :D

56
I am still uploading to Yay and will be doing so until next spring, at which time I'll evaluate the returns... As of now, I already have 1 in my sales account :)

I had my first Euro at Yay, and on the 1st of August at that! :) So my graph starts looking right ;)

Site Related / Re: RPI for all sites - cast your votes

What about sites, such as Yay and MostPhoto? Should we convert to $ before calculating RPI. If not, the results for sites will be lower than they really are!

« on: August 10, 2008, 02:47 »
...Three weeks later...

The holiday is over and I have returned from 32C on Mallorca to 10C in Oslo. :(

Checking my stats, all sites sold some images, even Yay with 1 sale. Shutterstock did amaze me - with only 28 files in my portfolio I have now had 29 sales!! I am less impressed with .25c / image, which brought me less than a couple of sales at iStock during the same period of time.

I am off uploading the rest of my portfolio to Shutterstock. Is it better to upload all files in one go or send smaller batches over a longer period of time, seeing as people say that SS preferebces new images?

Thanks, I will! I actually couldn't resist and did a last minute upload of about 50 files. We'll see how they fare... :)

Since I had 3 rejected initial batches before and I am going for a three-week holiday tomorrow anyway, I decided to submit my 4th attempt yesterday, so that when it got rejected I would be back from holiday and almost ready to submit the next attempt. :) To my surprise this batch got accepted with 8 images! I would even say 9, as one rejection was for focus on a flat scanned texture. :) Anyway, my protfolio at SS will have to contain 8 files until the end of my holiday, but having such a major acceptence is a very nice thing to take with you on a holiday. :)

63
Thanks, I do that with all the sites :) And as I said in my next to last post, I have become rather fond of 123RF's review process. :)

64
ironarrow, thanks for the comment, but it is a bit too late - as I wrote in my last post, I have finished uploading my complete portfolio to 123RF. :) Oh, some files got accepted after a second chance request.
Another thing. On IS Lupins sold 8 times, Forsythia - 3 times, Chopper - 2, Tallinn panorama - 1 time (on DT within a week of being uploaded), so I can't agree with you agreeing 100% with those rejections. :) In my books, any file that sells is a good file.

A substantial amount of files that have sold at IS and DT have been rejected by FL. For me, FL's sell ratio is the same as for CanStockPhoto - almost non-existent. IS and DT give the best return on ulpoad time. :)

67
After having now uploaded my entire portfolio with 123RF, I tend to agree - they are not as bad as I feared, in fact they are pretty good! :)

Here are my approval ratios from various sites:

MostPhoto - 100% (duh! :))
YayMicro - 99,82% (only 1 rejected)
123FR - 72,07%
CanStockPhoto - 69,12% (before they started to get tough)
iStockPhoto - 61,29% (with resubmits, it's only 42,21%)
DreamsTime - 48,68%
Fotolia - 24,24%

PS: You have here enough info to calculate the total size of my huge protfolio :D

« on: July 15, 2008, 05:03 »
I have recently decided to give FL a second chance and uploaded the remainder of my portfolio there. 178 files were uploaded. They had between 50% and 75% approval ratio at IS, DT, 123RF and CanStockPhoto. Here is the breakdown of FL rejections:

122 - Overabundant photo category
18 - Type of photograph
17 - Quality of the photograph
10 - Technical problems
1 - Similar photograph

10 - Selected

In other words approval ratio of this relatively large and diverse sample group was only 5,61% !!!  >:( My overall current FL Approval ratio (if one can call it that) is 24,59%

My conclusion is that it is a waste of time and bandwidth to upload to FL.

EDIT: Added 2 newly-rejected files to the calculation  :-\

123RF / Re: Potential copyright issue
« on: July 12, 2008, 08:18 »
This is actually a tonemapped HDR image, so the highlights are from a -2EV underexposed image, while the shadows come from a +2EV overexposed one. Without is the windows to the left whoufl have looked comepletely white and the part to the right would have been almost black (that is how the image appears on the "normally" exposed midtones shot.)

Already 1 sub sale and I started uploading less then one week ago. Nice!

71
What I don't like with them is that they show a large-size preview without any watermarks!

BTW, found another iStocker here: http://www.lightgate-imagery.com/Scenica/Running+Ahead.html

Then I should, probably also just accept (without complaining) the 123RF rejection of the following file (wanting a property release), which was accepted at IS and Yay Micro (DT rejected it for lighting, which I disagree with)

123RF / Potential copyright issue
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:02 »
123RF seems to be even more careful than IS. :) These four files were rejected with "Potential copyright issue":

Various permutations of these files were accepted at IS, DT, CanStock, Fotolia and Yay. I can't see what's very copyrightable with a generic tray (the isolated images of chocolates in various geometric configurations were accepted by themselves.)

Oh, and this one owas acepted:

Yaymicro / Re: YAY - How long will you give it?
« on: July 05, 2008, 04:45 »
I am inthe process of uploading my portfolio to them. I think I will give them as long as it takes, based on a simple logic of "if your images are not present at a site, they have no chance of being sold there" . :)

Yay and MostPhoto are two new sites that I joined, mainly because I am tired of American Pesetas and these two pay in hard currency - €uros.

75
That depends on the paper they were printed on. :) Then again, MIZ, I do like your take on my image. Mind if I use your view on sepia images? :)
