123RF / Re: How is your sales?
« on: March 26, 2013, 09:43 »
I continued to upload with a "wait and see" attitude
but made a pact with myself that if they're going to
pay me cr@p they better approve everything I throw
at them - the bad along with the good.

Upon my first rejection three weeks ago I stopped
uploading and I'm slowly in the process of dismantling
my portfolio.

You've got to ask yourself - how much value is there
in your body of work? And the amount of time you
invest in creating, setting up and presenting your
creative work? Do you really want to take an opportunity
away from another agency that will pay you far more
for your work?

Now i have 717pics and so far 3 sales this month.

You're describing my February to a "T". 4 sales with approx. 750 images. I actually wrote DT Support to ask them if there could be a problem with their "sales tabulation system". They assured me everything was fine.

March is better. Nothing to write home about but at least back to regular daily sales.

Uploaded to istock on 03/24/2006. May be the first time it ever sold.

And where was it located when the image sold? I had a recent sale with DP that I uploaded about 1.5 years ago. First sale and buried 28 pages in the DP dogpile. That
one sale has moved the image to page 5.  ;D

I have been wondering if anyone has done a chart of Micro sales vs the stock market ( dow jones)  It would be interesting to see if there is any type of relationship....

Reminds me of Vancouver, Canada. When China's economy booms so does Vancouver's real estate market. And when China's economy is on the down turn....Vancouver's real estate stagnates. I'm sure there's a correlation with the world economy and the Microstock industry.

Unpublished works Never Published, Never Registered Works

1) Life of the author + 70 years
2) Works from authors who died before 1943

3) Unpublished anonymous and pseudonymous works, and works made for hire (corporate authorship) = 120 years from date of creation
or
4) Unpublished works when the death date of the author is not known = 120 years from date of creation

And does this include photographs and film?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Very happy with SS
« on: March 06, 2013, 07:21 »
On my side it is apprx:
DT 1
SS 15
actually DT still tops my "# of uploads" but SS tops my earnings.
happy too.

What does your DT portfolio comprise of Vannphoto? Because my sales mirror JPSDK's. SS outsold DT by a margin of 25 to 1 in February. I'm mainly unique subject matter and landscape.

« on: March 01, 2013, 14:15 »
I find the number of views varies drastically from image to image when compared to the number of sales.

Me too but more views tells me the subject matter interests buyers.

If I get 500 views in a short period of time of a 747 landing but few purchases it tells me the subject is sought after which will motivate me to go out and get more creative/wait for better lighting etc.

View statistics is not updated - ever

My apologies for sounding like a broken record but I've got to get this off my chest.

NUMBER of VIEWS is information essential to a contributor and even more so with an agency like Pond5.

If I have 100 views and 1 sale within a given period of time, isn't it telling me that I could try lowering the price of the clip to gain more sales? In other words, I drop my price by $10 and in the next equal period of time I have 250 views and 10 sales it's telling me that I increased traffic thereby adding sales by dropping the price a certain percentage.

The more information you have for each clip, the more effective you can be determining the true value and popularity of your clip. Some of you seem perfectly comfortable with Pie in the Sky Pricing but how do you know you've created optimum pricing?

No. of views: who cares.

Me. Number of views tells me I'm using the correct search words and the agency is significant enough to attract a large number of buyers. And like I said, why feature it if it's inaccurate? It's got to be a deterrent to contributors who, unlike you, have had limited success selling on P5 and are under the assumption that no one looks at their clips.

I have, for example, several sold files but 0 views.

Interesting. Thanks. But why bother featuring views if it isn't an accurate stat? Odd. And your sales. Are they bargain basement prices? $10 a clip or do you have a wide range?

The continious sellers are listed in income order: Pond5, Shutterstock, iStockphoto, ClipCanvas and coming up a poor last is Revostock.

You're going to have to explain how in earth you're doing so well with Pond5....20 clips since mid October and not even a view!! let alone a sale!! My best is SS followed by IStock. Pond5 is a total waste of time as far as I'm concerned. Good for you but its beyond me how P5 could be a best seller. No audience. No sales.

DP is my top seller. :)

So what? At $.30 a pop I'd have to sell 50x as much as I sell with SS to earn the same income. My sales volume with DP is in the middle of the pack but my earnings month after month are dead last.

Canon / Re: Repair or replace?
« on: February 08, 2013, 11:28 »
Just out of curiosity, do you have any idea how many shots have been taken with your T2i? Even a rough guess-timate? My T3i is about 18 months old with approximately 15,000 images taken. I've heard that the Rebel series is good for approx. 100,000 snaps before you can start expecting repairs. Anybody have any comments?

A little awkward initially but only because its new. I had a terrible time trying to delete submitted images with the old system (yes....even I've had second thoughts about certain submissions). Just tried with the new system and it works quickly and efficiently and with multiple submissions.  ;D

Getty, perhaps.

If you want to create a professional copy purchase a camera table and shoot the images with a decent digital camera. Canon T3i/4i for example.

I actually prefer it now that I have worked out how to do it.  Very easy for bulk editing.

Great. I'm glad you're happy but in a democracy the majority rules. If 50.1% of DPs contributors agrees with you then fine. We all accept the changes and continue on. But if you're in the minority the changes should not have taken place.

The issue is, and we all witness it everyday in the forums, is that the companies hold ALL the power yet contributors are an integral part of their business. We are rarely, if ever, consulted yet the very existence of the microstock industry depends on talented, creative professionals.

This is a classic example of how and why Unions are formed. It's just a matter of time before microstock contributors will organize and work as one powerful, cohesive unit.

Your voice is silent. Our voices are loud.

Just tried it and it hangs when you click the "submit" button.

It begs the question: Why fix something when it ain't broke? I thought DP had the smoothest, easiest, fastest submission system.

DP. Why not conduct a poll before you make changes. Ask your contributors if they're happy with the process and if 50.1% tell you it needs improvement, then go to work.
I'll bet 95% would've told you they loved the old system.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Staying Power
« on: January 26, 2013, 17:08 »
Interesting. Thanks. But I'm not convinced the article is related to the growing problems we, as contributors, are facing.

In my country, Canada, two cable companies gobbled up the entire cable business: Shaw in western Canada and Bell in Eastern Canada. And frankly, I wish SS and IS would do the same in the MS world.

Currently there are far too many middle tier and bottom dwelling MS businesses that we, as contributors, have helped to create. Companies, like 123RF who feel the only way they can distinguish themselves from others and stay competitive in the MS world is by dropping their prices, allowing companies to freely distribute OUR images, and so on. A practice, if successful, that will mean lower and lower commissions for the contributors because its going to encourage others to do the same.

Tried FTPing a video clip yesterday (750mb) and it simply didn't register on my SS site. I use WinSCP and up till now have never had a problem. I'm trying a smaller clip this morning and keeping my fingers crossed.

DP are my "volume dealers". They accept 95% of my submissions. The only way you're going to make decent payout frequency with middle tier agencies is with high volume.

DP is far more lenient than DT or 123RF. I have twice as many images thus I make twice as much coin. I've always felt rejections have a positive side in that it makes you try harder and improve your skills. Shutterstock and IStock keep me striving which serves DP with on-going improved submissions.

72
My experience is that 123 and DP dont care about a release for interiors for editorial and they accepted my shots, and Shutterstock does care and they rejected.

Yes. My experience as well. Which I found odd considering if you submit a shot of a barren field with an outhouse barely visible in the far lefthand corner, 123RF will reject it unless you include a signed property release. Any image I've submitted with farm buildings has been rejected yet they accepted a collection of shots depicting the inside of a Lutheran Church in North America. No releases. Nadda.

No, just a common bike!

I found this on Shutterstock's website and I think it clears things up. I'm assuming the reason I'm not taxed with IStock is because they're based in Calgary. Here's the link for anyone interested:

That's strange.  I've never had money withheld for footage sales with SS.

Thanks sharpshot. I'll ask them to elaborate. I couldn't find anything dealing with the subject on their forums so I appreciate your response. Happy New Year! :D
