Dreamstime.com / Re: Email Alert Keyword
« on: December 05, 2012, 14:38 »
I think we are talking about the option in the profile page to specify a keyword that would get sent via e-mail when there are new matches.  See http://www.dreamstime.com/profile

In March 2011 an admin stated: "If you wish to be notified of all new additions on a certain topic, you insert that specific keyword and you will receive e-mails with newly added files."

Can't say I've tried it...

No complaints here this month on DT...  I wasn't particularly happy with the changes since April, but Oct and Nov have really turned around and seem to be benefiting me.  Too bad we can't just ALL be up !

lol- I will make sure I do the photo session prior to the drinking...

Don't be so hasty - drunk golfers is a wide open area on SS :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: dreamstime image levels
« on: November 01, 2012, 11:29 »
I'm not entirely sure how this works?
I have an image that sold twice on the same day, so surely after the first sale it should have been bumped up into the next level?

I can't find the thread on DT, but I've previously seen this explained by the admins - if a buyer buys an image that causes it to go up a level, the same buyer gets to buy it again for the lower level price.  Another attempt to reduce confusion :)  Makes sense at some level - I'd be annoyed as buyer if I saw an image's pricing and decided to buy the file plus the RAW, but the RAW price jumped up after I bought the jpg.  It would mean buyers could pay quite different amounts if they bought the RAW first, rather than the JPG...

I'm really tempted by the Olympus E-M5! What lenses do you have? Are you able to submit to all major microstock website and Alamy?

"The quality as as good as a Canon 7D or quite as good as 5D Mark II." maybe this is a little bit too much, but anyway I love the body, and I was just concerned about picture quality for microstock.

Have you tried also shooting some videos?

I've used my E-M5 to submit successfully to all the Top Tier and Middle Tier sites (except for Pond5 and Envato) plus Alamy.  DT approval with the E-M5 is 97% this month (70-ish images).  I've got an ISO1600 shot approved (and sold on all three) with this camera at SS, IS and DT.  I don't think this camera would limit anyone from creating images that sell, and is greatly preferable to any compact I've had with me.  The built in image stabilizer is a huge benefit for video with prime lenses (by comparison Canon and Nikon have few image stabilized primes), though I think the video is the weak part of the E-M5 compared to Panasonic's excellent video.  I don't do stock video.  I'm shooting with the Panasonic 14 and 25mm primes (20mm when I travel), and the Oly 45mm and 75mm primes.  If I'm skiing or biking the 14mm or 20mm and the body slip into a pocket.  A small Crumpler bag hold the 14mm plus two larger primes (25mm and 75mm).

In any situation I would never choose the OM-D over a full frame camera with a quality prime from an IQ standpoint, and I cannot honestly say that the E-M5 keeps up with a 5D MkIII or D800 - but it is a lot smaller, and cheaper.  It is almost indistinguishable from a Canon 7D for IQ, for example, but with better dynamic range.  It makes a lot of sense for someone who can't justify the more expensive cameras, and especially for someone wanting to travel light.  If you sell a lot of large file size images then something with more megapixels may make more sense.  My particular images seem to have more appeal to bloggers and other end uses that don't require larger than 16MP.  Of course, for travel and landscape shots you can always stitch...

I find my images sell better when the concept is stronger, not when the IQ is better :)  Since buyers can't even see which camera the image was taken with on most sites I don't know how much it impacts sales to use a smaller camera.  My old shots taken with a Canon G10 can still sell well.

All that said, I do think the OM-D is a little bit finicky compared to the Canon I'm used to.  The dials work great and the super control panel is well done, but overall the dSLR with an LCD is just that much easier to get a quick idea of what your settings are.  Since ISO, shutter and aperture are part of a larger electronic interface I just find they don't jump out at me as much.  I'm used to it and appreciate the other benefits, but I'm not sure the OM-D ergonomics would appeal to everyone.  Definitely something you want to handle before you buy.  I often find that if I've left the camera on AutoISO it doesn't jump out at me the next time I grab the camera.

Dreamstime.com / Re: New Prices. Again.
« on: October 26, 2012, 12:57 »
So late this afternoon I had 5 extra small images from a series  sell at 21 cents royalty each. As far as I can tell that's a new low for DT ( I could find one or two sales for 23 cents or 25 cents earlier, but I didn't look through everything). Percentage increase (to 25%) notwithstanding, the new pricing set a new low for me :(

Last week I had a $0.17 XS sale under the 20% royalty rate for a level 0, so 21c is actually an improvement, as far as Level 0 sales go...

It seems like an OK change, but I think their pricing is so complicated to a buyer that I doubt it will make a huge difference.  Too many changes, too often in the last year to really draw any conclusions on the impact this will have.

At least IS, FT and 123 give you advance notice of a shafting!!

You can't say they didn't give us notice, Serban said "There are more plans scheduled for a great fall..." in his June post (http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_31748.  He didn't say it would be great for contributors! :(

DT also allows images to be re-keyworded without any review so if a non-seller sits for 2-1/2 years then the photog pays to have it re-keyworded it can sit for another 3 years. New keywords don't improve image quality and some older images are just not up to snuff.

Not any more, they removed the re-keyword option in September: http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_32290

Do I have to re-apply as a photo submitter, currently a video submitter.

I did upload my port. I can find no where to set prices for photo or any kind of photo template.

They did have my port. from 123 but I deactivated partner distribution yesterday on 123RF

Thanks,
Don

Shouldn't have to.  I had some videos there from a while back, and was able to upload photos (uploaded 2, both approved)...  They created a separate acct for the 123RF linked images (for me).

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT - Possible Commissions Change?
« on: August 10, 2012, 12:19 »
Only if they stand by the minimum as the lowest royalty so it is 35c and up.  There has to be some room there.  If buyers used to get by with a 25/day sub pack they have to be leaving more subs on the table now that they can get the same image that used to take 3 sub credits for 1...

Canon / Re: EOS M mirrorless camera released
« on: July 23, 2012, 14:19 »
What does this offer beyond the G1X from Canon (for now)?  The 22mm prime is interesting, but not that different from the wide end on the G1X at f/2.8, and the G1X gains IS through the zoom range.  The G1X has a lot more direct control...  The fact that you can put EF lenses on the EOS-M is nice, but it isn't that realistic.  If you are going to bring a bunch of EF lenses how much do you gain from a slightly smaller body?  Canon, Sony, and Nikon are hindered by their excellent full frame glass when it comes to mirrorless - tough to justify making all those lenses again smaller.  If you want proof they won't do it, consider how many EF-S or DX primes they've made for the crop cameras...

LEDs replace the Fluorescent bulb in a typical (older) LCD screen.  So technically it is still an LCD, but just backlit by groups of LEDs rather than one big Fluorescent bulb.  In the price range you are talking I don't think you are going to see much difference other than lower power, but that is benefit enough for me if there are no other disadvantages...  I'd compare the contrast and brightness numbers to be sure.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime Subscription Plans Update
« on: June 27, 2012, 18:14 »
Seems like a commission cut to me?

Payment for all subs will be the same in spite of Level -- in my case that is 35 cents (unless it is PP sale, which is less) no matter the size or how many sales the image has.

And, doesn't that encourage buyers of larger (more popular) images to buy Larger subscription packages?

Perhaps this will push images to higher Levels ... but for what purpose -- more subs?

I can't see that - if anything this reduces the number of subs required for a given number of images.  I don't see any case where this spreads MORE revenue around - unless it somehow gets a lot of new buyers on board.  That seems unlikely, and of no benefit to non-exclusives if those buyers come from other sites...  Given the pricing of a monthly sub package, at least this seems unlikely to push many from credits into subs.  I can't say I did better after the last pricing go 'round, so I'm not too excited about seeing my subs pay less too.  If the last change had added 15% to my revenue I wouldn't mind so much losing 5-10% now...

I doubt that it's that good for buyers if DT changes the rules of the game ten times a year.

This is one change the buyers would be foolish to complain about!  More downloads for less money...

Dreamstime.com / Re: Stop being exclusive
« on: May 12, 2012, 10:39 »
Assuming same port on all the top 4 I'd guess a 3 to 4 times revenue increase over DT exclusivity

Definitely not my experience...  Just to give an example - picking a random person who posts numbers every month: Steve Heap.  We have similar sized portfolios on Dreamstime.  My non-exclusive revenue on DT last month was 8 times his, and MORE than what he earns on SS.  Yet my images on SS are only earning me 1/3 of what I earn on DT still (note that I could only get about 1/2 my portfolio up on SS, but it is the half that counts - but even doubling SS revenue would be less than DT for me).

Obviously it takes time to get established on other sites, and you can't compare portfolios.  But I see a lot of people that state that it is clear cut:  you WILL earn way more being non-exclusive.  They don't know that for any individual portfolio.  All that is clear to me is that there are a lot of people for whom DT makes up a small amount of their earnings.  You cannot extrapolate from that to say that if they were exclusive the whole time they would have left money on the table.  Probably.  Most likely.  But not for sure.  Especially if they focused on what sells on DT.  There are people who sell images that are a good fit for Dreamstime based on image content, keywording and all the rest - for them, that may not translate into stellar sales elsewhere.  My point comparing to Steve is not to suggest that it is a perfect comparison.  Just that you can't look at one's persons numbers and say "he makes 5x more on SS alone, if I go non-exclusive and drop by 50% I'll still end up ahead on SS alone!".  Maybe his content is a better fit for SS than DT.

There are lots of reasons to not be exclusive.  Some (most?) will make more being non-exclusive.  Some need exclusivity to focus their efforts and stick with it.  I would have quit this a long time ago if I hadn't gone exclusive.  Maybe I left money on the table being exclusive, but quitting four years ago because I was only making a few dollars a month would have left tens of thousands of dollars on the table. Going exclusive focused my efforts, and that choice really paid off for me.  I can't imagine starting out with a few images a month on depositphotos these days and getting stoked about the future of microstock :)

Please refrain from telling people going non-exclusive is going to quadruple their income with no experience to back it up...  People can pick apart my portfolio and explain away WHY I didn't see sales elsewhere after the fact, but that just makes the point - there are no guarantees :)  Not everyone will see dramatic gains going non-exclusive - especially if they dramatically outsold other people on DT.

I left being exclusive last Sept. and my revenue has dropped to about 50% of my exclusive revenue.  I have almost 1000 images level 3 or higher, and left about 15% of my portfolio as exclusive - either older images I don't think are worth selling elsewhere now, or some that were my best sellers on DT.  The younger your portfolio, the more I would expect the drop to be.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that there is some kind of guarantee that you'll greatly outsell DT on SS or others after you leave.  I'm not there yet...  I was up year over year in April, but by a small amount.

General Stock Discussion / Re: DT Nightmare
« on: May 01, 2012, 00:49 »
I am seeing much lower volume the last few days.  I was optimistic of the new levels in that I've now got a lot of level 3-5 stuff, but sales need to pick up to take advantage of it.  My April was within a few dollars of March; sales were down noticeably (70% of March) but RPD was up to compensate so my revenue was even.  I agree with LisaFx that it is early in the new scheme.  Fingers are crossed that this is just a slow 4 days for some reason.  A month and we'll have a much better idea of the impact of the pricing changes...

Dreamstime.com / Re: New DT 2012 Pricing Structure
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:24 »
Given that the last couple of weeks had a searching issue for relevancy (defaulted to best seller for a while) and they were playing with the new methods, presumably by doing some of each and comparing, I think that comparing March to April will be totally useless.  Add to that the fact that buyers were likely unaware of pricing changes and I think we'll need a few months to really assess this change in pricing.

One thing no one is mentioning is that subscriptions have remained 'unchanged' - but given the level boost it means that a lot more images will hit the 2x or 3x pricing, which should provide a boost to RPD from subs.

20% royalty (level 0) is a insult.

At least it is one you can avoid - by deleting any image with no sales after two years...

There is such a camera on the market.... Leica M9 :).... maybe the price of the camera answer your question regarding a lightweight full frame camera.

The M9 doesn't have an EVF, does it ?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Number of Keywords on SS
« on: February 23, 2012, 13:49 »
Do you others agree on that? Some say you get punished in search results with 50 keywords...

Hogwash.  Where is the evidence of this?

I tend to agree that you are not punished.  When I do a relevancy search on SS I find the top matches tend to have close to 40-50 keywords so I fail to see any evidence that fewer keywords gets you better placement.  In the other sort orders (popular, new, random) it would seem more is better as well.  Not necessarily the case on other sites, though.

Interesting - I too have been trying to work out the basic criteria they employ for the Relevancy search option. It seems that on SS searches for 'Popular' and 'Relevant' come out pretty much the same ! Elsewhere (e.g. DT) the number of keywords is the defining factor and its difficult to think what else could be used to define 'relevancy'. Anyone got any theories ?

The title doesn't seem to count either - I did a search on 'fun' and none of the most relevant matches included that word in the title...  The only thing I can think of that would make a lot of sense is if they used the stats on which keywords were used to actually buy the image.  That would naturally mean that the number of sales would count, in the sense that images with no sales have no data.
