It seems to have worked for DP and has allowed them to build a library of nearly 14m files in four years. And we humans do seem to like going to places that have more stuff for sale.
One of my top 100 images is a background of crumpled, brown parcel paper. Okay, the thing is sharp and evenly lit but its still a sheet of paper. As creative people we are rightly concerned about aesthetics and quality but we/I sometimes overlook utility. 504

Gostwyck: "With their buggy, slow site which takes forever to do anything then price pretty much becomes irrelevant."
A lot of people don't like change, hence they will stay with a more expensive bank or utilities provider to avoid upheaval - or remain patrons of an expensive grocery store just for convenience. However, as I've experienced in the IT industry when price is not a deal breaker, not being valued and having your time wasted most certainly is. Site performance should have been much higher on their To Do List. 505

The discussion of earnings bit could be resolved simply by banning the dozen or so contributors who bleat about the lack of sales and the imminent demise of SS one week and then can't wait to tell everyone how many SODs and ELs and whatnot they've raked in the next.

DT has always showered me with affection one month and given me the cold shoulder the next. As for September, I'm back in their warm embrace and on target for at least my second best month this year.
October will no doubt find me on the doorstep again, in the rain, my clothes flying out the bedroom window. 509

IS/PP have a 30 day window but they're often too feeble to get the window open and sometimes they break it.
They still have 13 sleeps until the end of the month. Have faith. 510

Silly me. I'd hoped the rebrand might include a turbo charged site performance to go with the slick new font - but no.
Someone should have pointed out a new paint job does not make the wheels go faster or provide for a more refined driving experience. 511

I wish them well for everyone's sake.
I've a deep mistrust of rebranding as it often looks like someone decided a t*rd might not look like a t*rd if you present it in a nice box tied off with a pink ribbon. 512

I haven't bumped into any soothsayers recently but since the ides of march my sales have hit BME more than once on three of the top four sites. Which is, coincidently, when I started uploading again after a ten month break. It could be I got swept up in the algorithm changes allegedly rigged to favour all those refugees from IS or is it merely the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune?
Who knows? All I can say is Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt 515

Hit a BME in May/June but sales have dropped to 15% below average in July/August. Feels like strawberries n' cream one quarter but whips and chains the next.

^^^I'd be very tempted to get the Ricoh GR for street/editorial work and on paper the results would be more than sufficient for microstock editorial - but as I said, I personally find it difficult to compose and shoot using an LCD screen.
http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2013/06/07/the-ricoh-gr-camera-review-the-new-large-sensor-gr-arrives/ But unless someone is kind enough to buy the Ricoh for me as a christmas present I can't have it since my next purchase will be a DSLR - the versatility outweighs all other issues for me personally. 520
General - Top Sites / Re: Has anyone seen change in their SS, FT and DT sales since Yuri Arcurs left?« on: September 02, 2013, 10:09 »
Four BME's in a row at SS and FT. Whereas DT is flat and IS have been dumped into 4th place.
I'd be prepared to wager my results are nothing to do with Yuri (or indeed myself*) and arise from a combination of half-witted decisions by some agencies and astute, intelligent moves by others. *Although I have uploaded at a brisk pace in 2013 compared to years 2011/2012 521
iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS Newsletter - A collection of excuses« on: September 02, 2013, 05:18 »
Good grief! There are posts in this thread that are longer than the newsletter! Who would have thought a simple missive would have caused such a furore? The fact is there is a great deal of antipathy towards IS and has been for a couple of years - and it wasn't created on MSG.
I remain convinced IS are trying to turn the business around in some shape or form but can't help feeling they've overcooked the pudding and introduced far too much complexity. Also they have been severely outmanoeuvred by other agencies, especially SS and perhaps even 123rf and DP. They have a future but whatever that future is remains difficult to fathom when they seem unable to communicate it in a coherent manner and even trample all over their contributor base by not not communicating some stuff at all, or saying they will and then failing to do so. I would dearly like to see something from the very top level to engender confidence in this future. 522

My DL number is a BME for 2013 but revenue has dropped like the parachutist who put on the backpack labelled PACKED LUNCH by mistake - For the first time, I could see the PP outstrip my "Main Collection" earnings in August.

General Stock Discussion / Re: any compact camera good enough for stock« on: August 27, 2013, 08:23 »
Having used compact film cameras including the Yashica T5D and a Ricoh GR1V for editorial and street work I quite like the look of the new Ricoh GR. But it doesn't have a viewfinder and I've tried and failed to get along without one. I know they have optional things that look like a jeweller's loupe and sit on top but they look stupid.
For a viewfinder with 100% view and full exposure info in the Ricoh, I would happily sacrifice video and live view which I hardly use. In street/editorial work you either got the shot or you missed it. I tend to work in AP most of the time but will even swith to P mode if things are happening fast and I also like the sound of the "snap focus" mode on the Ricoh. So give me that and I'll use it for fast, unobtrusive street/editorial work, maybe even corporate or private event work - but I can't see myself ever using a compact in the studio or for static stock work - buy a Canon 1100d if you want quality in a small(ish) package. |
