Adobe Stock / Puzzled by video rejection
« on: September 01, 2018, 07:13 »
I have a very small portfolio on Adobe Stock consisting of a mix of photos and videos. ive noticed that generally, the reviewers are more strict with photos compared to videos. Ive had a fair few photos rejected there but Ive never had a video rejected until now.

It's a 4k time lapse video and it's supposedly been rejected due to a technical issue. "Unfortunately, during our review we found that it contains one or more technical issues, such as unintentional shaking, empty black or white frame, compression and/or audio issues."

My video doesn't really contain any of those issues as far as I'm aware. And it was accepted on Pond 5. And a HD version of the clip was accepted on SS.

Interestingly, I used to have a different copy of the same video on AS in the not too distant past. I use Shotcut software these days for rendering stock videos and I used the prores codec for that particular 4k time lapse video which was subsequently accepted by AS. Later, I found out that Shotcut uses a fake / non-genuine prores codec which can cause issues during editing on Mac computers. So I removed that video from AS and the other stock agencies. Not long ago, I exported the same video again but this time, used the h264 codec and this is the copy that was rejected.

I do find it kind of ironic that AS accepted a video with a fake codec but rejected another copy of the same video that had a genuine codec.

General - Stock Video / Re: portolio size vs sales
« on: August 27, 2018, 08:17 »
When I had about 35 videos on SS, I made 3 sales (all HD.)

However, I have heard of people with hundreds of videos in their ports on SS who complained of having no sales.

Pond5 / Files not visible on some pages
« on: August 26, 2018, 10:37 »
Something really weird is going on at Pond 5 at the moment. Don't suppose anyone else is experiencing this? When I go to my uploads, there's nothing there. No video files are visible. It also says "Viewing 0." However, when I go to Recent Uploads, I do see some of my latest uploads there but only five of them. When I upload more files, it always remains at five. The oldest one disappears and the latest file appears at the top.

Dreamstime.com / Photo, Illustrations and video requests forum
« on: August 24, 2018, 21:19 »
Would anyone agree that the Photo, Illustrations and video requests sub forum on DT has the most off topic posts in all of the message boards on that site? Obviously, this sub forum serves a useful purpose but I always find it strange why so many people treat it as a dumping ground for all sorts of topics and general gossip. There are people who ask to have their work critiqued there and also people who ask random questions about the site. It's got to be the most abused sub forum on all of DT. It's gotten better lately, but I recall there was a time when about a third of the posts on there were off topic.

Microstock Services / Re: Is Stocksubmitter safe?
« on: August 24, 2018, 08:18 »
I notice for Pond 5, there's an option within Stocksubmitter to recode videos to Photojpeg if necessary. Would it be worth it? Does SS do a decent job of the conversion? Some of my videos do have the h264 codec but I doubt the bitrate of these clips would be high enough for an uncompressed codec like Photojpeg.

Okay I temporarily disabled Avast and was able to get Stocksubmitter started. Then a pop up message appeared that said: "Please avoid submitting more than 10 - 20 products per day to CreativeMarket as it may result in your account on CreativeMarket being banned!"

What on earth is CreativeMarket?

I started another update but I'm getting another one of those weird messages. It says:

"FirstChanceException: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
Trace0: - Intel32
System.Net.Sockets.Socket.EndReceiver (System.IAsyncResult)"

I wouldn't have a clue what this means.

Update was not successful because Avast interrupted it. You should restart the software for it to update without errors.

Sounds like those updates may have been potentially harmful.

Microstock Services / Is Stocksubmitter safe?
« on: August 24, 2018, 03:14 »
This afternoon, I installed Stocksubmitter (having never used it before.) Several minutes later, I attempted to open the program but was informed that it had to do some updates. I saw a progress bar advancing across the screen, indicating the progress of the updates. All of a sudden, my Avast Antivirus software called out: "Threat Detected!" and prompted me to run a scan (which I did.) Meanwhile, all these messages started appearing on the screen containing unusual text. And it looked like the updates weren't successful anyway.

I'm actually reluctant to start up Stocksubmitter again unless someone can confirm that it's safe?

If you go to the support centre link on the DaVinci site there is a Latest Downloads section on the front page. Scroll down the list of bulletins to see links to earlier versions of all their software and updates.

Ah thankyou. It's quite an extensive list. I see various versions of Resolve 15, 14, 12, 11 and 10. I was hoping for a version that was compatible with Windows 7 and 32bit system (that's what my pc runs.) I did some googling and found out that generally, you need 8GB of RAM minimum to run Resolve. I only have 4GB of RAM. And if I recall from memory, the family member's laptop that's running 64bit has a similar amount of RAM. So looks like no Davinci Resolve for me....at least for now. Though in the future that may change if I upgrade my pc or get another computer that's higher spec.

511
Remember too that 15 is not supported on Windows7.

Uh oh. I didn't realise this. Are there any older versions of Resolve available for download that I can run with Windows 7?

512
Thanks for the reply. Yea I think I'll download it again. Good point about the hardware specs. Originally, I tried to install Resolve on my pc but discovered it can only be installed on 64bit Windows (my pc runs 32.) At least the laptop runs 64bit.

513
I'm in the process of trying to install Davinci Resolve on a laptop running Windows 7. Ive downloaded the initial software program from the Blackmagic website. There's a file (though not an .exe file) located in the Downloads folder with the Davinci Resolve name. Though when I double-click on it, it won't open. And nothing happens when I right-click on it and select 'Open'. Any idea why it's refusing to open?

Adobe Stock / Re: Dead, dead, dead
« on: August 17, 2018, 04:10 »
I find it really hard to build a decent sized portfolio on Adobe Stock. For one thing, they don't accept editorial and I shoot a heck of a lot of editorial. So there are a lot of photos I have that I cannot submit. And when I do submit photos, about half of them cannot go through due to some weird technical issue that nobody has a solution for. If I try and resubmit, they will still not go through. And with the images that do make it through, there is a very tough review process which rejects a fair few of my images. Though a fair few of my images are also accepted as well.

I don't get heaps of regular sales on AS but considering the tiny size of my portfolio on there, I'm actually surprised by the number of sales I do get. My portfolio on Dreamstime is over 3x larger than my port on AS and yet my sales on AS are a lot more 'regular' compared to DT. If ya had a large portfolio on AS, I think there'd be pretty good potential.

VideoBlocks / Re: Commission cut
« on: August 16, 2018, 04:09 »
Their prices are now comparable to Shutterstock and they're paying a higher commission.

Comparable to Shutterstock? I'd say a heck of a lot better than SS. On average, my HD sales at SS have been around $17 - $22. And these days, people are getting a lot of $1.50 sales for HD and 4k clips through SS. I think VB blows SS out of the water when it comes to stock footage earnings.

General - Stock Video / Re: Footage with sound or without
« on: August 16, 2018, 01:21 »
I hardly ever submit videos with sound. I don't have a good quality external mic / audio recorder anyway. So I don't have much choice but to submit silent videos.

By the way, if you want to be grammatically correct in your written text, 'footage' is an uncountable noun. Therefore, there is no such word as 'footages.' You can use the word 'videos' or 'clips' instead for the plural.

Sorry - I'm training to be a teacher in TESOL - that's why the mini grammar lesson slipped out.

My main question is which one is the most international one? ntsc or pal? 24 or 30 fps?

Just to be clear - PAL is 25fps and not 24. Though I guess you know this by now from all the other contributors' replies. I generally stick to shooting in 25fps because I live in a PAL country (Australia.) Though not too long ago, I acquired a GitUp action camera for my quadcopter which only offers 30fps as a standard frame rate. So looks like I'll be forced to use 30fps for aerial footage. Some say there's less chance of flicker when filming at 25fps under fluorescent lighting but I believe your choice of shutter speed will also help significantly under those conditions, regardless of what frame rate your recording at.

Years ago, I used to shoot on motion picture film on a semi-regular basis. When shooting on super 8, I'd switch between 18fps and 24fps. When shooting on 16mm, I'd use 24fps exclusively. By the way, my Canon 1014E super 8 camera has a 54fps setting for beautifully smooth slow motion.

General - Stock Video / Re: No video sales for a while...
« on: August 15, 2018, 21:11 »
Yea 50 videos is really small. I have an even smaller video portfolio with about 35 clips. Out of those 35 videos, I have sold 3 which I think is a respectable ratio. Of course I plan to upload much, much more.

519
Interesting strategy. I have MPEG Streamclip but it won't work anymore. Ive heard of other people experiencing the same issue. I re-downloaded it from the website but that didn't make any difference. So yea MPEG Streamclip is no longer an option.

520
For anyone who's familiar with Adobe Premier Elements, does it offer the Photojpeg codec and can you use this codec within a MOV export? Hopefully, you can select progressive as well rather than being forced to use interlaced.

Ive just found out that Shotcut doesn't offer Photojpeg, despite the large number of codecs that you can choose from there.

I don't suppose Resolve offers Photojpeg?

General - Stock Video / Re: Video codecs (boring, I know)
« on: June 21, 2018, 04:06 »
Ive had a hard time too figuring out which codec would be the most suitable. And I'm a Windows user also. I had just about made up my mind to use photojpeg because it offers clients more flexibility in colour grading. However, just like prores, it's likely to create huge video files. Last time I tried to upload a large 4k video to different sites, it took two whole days which is ridiculous. And constant breakdowns and restarts. I don't want to repeat that painful process again. Looks like I'll be forced to use h264 instead unfortunately.

522
Okay Ive managed to get Dropbox working by testing it with a word document. Though despite the instructions I found online, I can't create folders within the Dropbox website (though I can upload files.) Unfortunately, I don't think this system will be sufficient for sending my videos to stock sites. When I read about and tried Dropbox ages ago, I had this vague recollection that you create a folder on your desktop and transfer files there that you want to share. Essentially, those files in your desktop would be accessible to other people on different compuers that have your permission to view them.

What I did just now with Dropbox is very different to what I remember it to be. Following the instructions I found recently, I had to upload a file to the Dropbox website which relies on my internet speed. If I try that with a large video file, it's going to be no better than uploading directly to an individual stock site which may take one or two days. Even with a word document, the process of sharing seemed sluggish and slow.

So I have a dilemma.

VideoBlocks / Video review taking ages
« on: June 14, 2018, 20:57 »
I submitted a video to Videoblocks on 2 June 2018 and it still hasn't been reviewed. Are these long delays normal? There was another video I uploaded before that which only took a few days to get reviewed and accepted. That clip was using the h264 codec and the one that's currently in Limbo uses Prores but I doubt the codec has anything to do with review times.

General - Stock Video / Is this workflow okay?
« on: June 14, 2018, 07:19 »
Ive got a whole bunch of clips that Ive trimmed and colour graded in Sony Movie Studio that I'd like to submit as stock. I can export them from SMS as MP4s and bring them into Shotcut where I can convert them to MOVs with the Prores codec, ready for submitting.

The thing is when I export them from Sony Movie Studio initially, Ive no idea what codec they have (it doesn't actually specify.) So I don't know if they're being compressed in some harmful way before they make their way over to Shotcut. Would it be preferable to bring the original camera files directly into Shotcut and do my trimming and colour grading there and then export as MOVs with Prores codec?

Though I don't want to spend the time trimming and colour grading the same clips all over again with different software. I'm pretty much happy with their current look!

I'm more used to editing with Sony Movie Studio as Ive been using that software for much longer - the last few years in fact. I initially downloaded Shotcut to use as a video converter.

I don't suppose Davinci Resolve offers Prores as an option?
