I read about the better beamer.  Was looking into it as well.  The initial investment just keeps on growing (and I realize that this lens won't be much good for stock so the return on it financially might not be very good - however its a personal choice)

General Stock Discussion / Time to spend cash
« on: April 23, 2008, 12:39 »
So, its that time of year for me to go out and spend some serious cash on equipment I probably should be getting, but here is the initial list that I am going to order:

Canon Telephoto EF 500mm f/4.0L IS (Image Stabilizer) USM Autofocus Lens

Wimberley Gimbal Type Tripod Head II - with Arca Swiss-Type Quick Release Base
(Requires Plate)

Wimberley P40 Arca-Type Quick Release Plate for Telephoto Lenses - 5.9" (150mm)

Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Autofocus Lens

Hoya 58mm Ultraviolet UV(0) Haze Multi-Coated Glass Filter

Canon EF 1.4x II Extender

Canon 2x II Extender EF - Autofocus

Case Logic SLRC-4 SLR/Computer Backpack - for Photo or Digital SLR Outfit with a 15.4"
Laptop Computer, plus accessories

Now, I have to ask those who use such materials whether they believe that the Canon 2x II is worth it.  As well, I currently own a 100-400L but is the 500mm that much better for wildlife and sports

The 500mm will obviously be limited for stock and such but my passion is wildlife - especially birds - so thats why I want it.

I also own a 30D so I will lose autofocus with that lens (planning on a 5D MK II upgrade)

I'm thinking of dropping the 50mm f/1.4 and the 2x until then

Any suggestions?

For the dollar they want to pay, I can tell them where to go.

Pay 50 bucks or something for an extended license, and you can have that raw file - :)

I'm not in a very good mood today lol

Sure:

the first three are winners - two of which I've already stated I strongly disagree with

Just peruse through and I believe most will disagree with the picks

I don't know who votes on these things but seriously, only the bike rider should have gotten a top-three for this sports theme.  And the ratings for others were terrible - there's a photo of a kid playing hockey that looks dark and the composition is also nothing exciting, yet it got a higher rating than mine from what I can see (also hockey - but has action and such)

Am I bitter?  Kind of.  Why?  Not because I thought I should win, but because this particular contest had so much potential (and some people did have great shots) to bring out great sports shots but instead was brought to some stupid poses and terrible sports ideas (two of which won)

That is my rant - if I offended on of the two people who won that didn't take the bike photo, sorry, but I'm calling it like I see it, so too bad

who is this guy?  seriously

It's the latest version of LO syndrome.  Not wasting my time...

Just a thought though, I'm not creative with names, but can't someone who's trying to come up with a stock site come up with a decent name.  "MOSTPHOTOS"?!  I'm boycotting because of the name  ;)

Classy guys, but seriously people - look - just take a look when someone says "NEW STOCK PHOTO SITE"

If guys with class and what seemed to be a good idea couldn't make it work for most, why would you submit to a site just pops up saying "we're awesome, we pay you 70% of Zero"

Wake-up call for those who are always positive about rando-startups.

I feel sorry for Bryan, he did a good job of communicating with us and put together what seems to be a good site.

I have 108 credits if anyone is close.  If someone wants to "buy" an extended license of my pics, I'll be pretty happy too :)

Thanks Bryan for all your efforts.  Good luck in the future --hopefully you read this

This is the reason why I do not join sites that are not established and not backed by huge corporations that are proven.  I still haven't joined Snapvillage because they don't have FTP that I can see.

I make enough money between SS, IS, DT, FT, BS that I don't need to waste time looking for pennies at third-rate websites.

LO is joining that, the fact they lowered the payout to $25 is really nice though, so now I may get a payout a year (only had one payout ever at $115)

Stick to what works, the effort it takes to track all these sites isn't worth it 90% of the time.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia rejects for similar photograph
« on: April 06, 2008, 12:17 »
Fotolia review is crap.  Period.  They don't explain anything and when you e-mail them for an answer, they give you more censored generic crap.  Pardon my language.  I am just enraged with that site because it used to be my 3rd best earning site, now its falling out of the top 5.

Crap.  Again, I'm a bit angrier than normal.  But still - stupid rejections happen all the time there.

Maybe its me though - maybe for 2 years I've been producing technically inferior photos that reviewers at iStock and Shutterstock just don't see.

Hoo-ra for better agencies.

That is my rant.

600mm f/4 IS :)

Don't be cheap when it comes to lenses.  LIke you said, you will get it back.  The 17-40 f/4 is fantastic, and its not that expensive.  And you really don't need IS anyways.

PS - beware of 14 dollar batteries.  Might not be a good idea

Computer Hardware / Re: How to speed up Photosohop
« on: March 28, 2008, 10:34 »
I built a computer specifically for that - kept freezing at first because stupid BIOS was set to look for SLI and all my memory slots are filled with RAM.

Duocore 2.33 GHz 1333 MHz FSB
4GB of RAM DDR2 800
Was using Vista, now back to XP for reliability
Photoshop CS3
Bridge CS3
XFXforce 680i SLI LT motherboard
GeForce 8500GT
DVI for the monitor
3 hdd's - 160 for programs and the operating system, 300 and 400 GB for the storage of files.  Works like a dream now that I ironed out the bugs.

Very good machine. A hardcore one :)

Its great. No problems anymore.  Only cost 1000 dollars cdn

NOthing has changed.  Woke up this morning to find 28 out of 30 rejected for "Composition" and "Poor lighting" meanwhile I have other photos with similar "composition" that are getting downloads daily and I have photos of a goalie playing hockey in which I can't control the lighting and the lighting is perfectly fine.  Here is an example at DT:

http://www.dreamstime.com/hockey-goaltender-image4079577

EDIT:

Its stupid crap like this that makes me want to go exclusive at IS.  In the end I hope that these companies get what they deserve for hiring idiots or trying to save money by using machines.  That said, I know that SS has been good in the past so I hope they return to that level - but given the recent events, it just seems to get worse.

522
Lack of controls over reviewers are really annoying for everyone.  Thats why if I feel a photo is good enough I will reupload it until it gets through and it usually does (especially if other sites accept it first try).

Worked a bunch of times and now I have great sellers because of it

General Stock Discussion / Re: Canon XT vs. Canon XTi.
« on: March 25, 2008, 08:19 »
Used an XT for over a year.  Then jumped to 30D and now moving towards MKiii, but XT is a good camera at ISO 200 and lower if you don't have the money to spend.  Just be prepared that sometimes you will need to spend time to fix certain areas of photos.

Not everyone can afford Nikon D3's like Rinder, but you can improve photoshop skills to compensate a little.

« on: March 25, 2008, 08:16 »
Yap and I'd wish you would have kept it private for a while like all other people did here.  ;D

Well said, when I got my email I was impressed that it was personally written and as a result I've uploaded there.

It would seem now that anybody can contribute, I just hope they maintain the site on a professional level, they've started out well and have a good marketing strategy and background.

For anybody that has joined as a result of seeing this thread I implore you to maintain a level of professionalism on this site, don't turn the forum into something like LO or FP which now come over as sites for amateur snappers, that will kill Yaymicro and we'll all lose out on any potential sales.

You know what kills Yaymicro?  "Yaymicro" - Thats just as bad a name as "Snapvillage" and/or "LuckyOliver".

80/20 rule.  80% of your revenue will come from 20% of the sites (if not now, but eventually) - your time to upload to the remaining 80% isn't worth that 20% -

Adobe Stock / Re: Just not worth the effort (for me, anyways)

Got a few responses back from my questions and they don't answer questions very well, if at all.  They just paste their generic crap (same answer in two different responses) and don't give a crap about what you are saying.

So...I will stop uploading, leave whatever files I have and that will be my way of telling them where to go - I'd rather not deal with robots :)
