I'm not saying this as fact - just pointing out an observation/trend that is becoming more prevalent.
I've noticed that the downloads don't follow an "ebb and flow" and now go by a weekly trend whereby downloads are torrid for one week (aka best week ever) and then die off 60% the next week, only to go back to best week ever status the week after that.
I have a feeling that the best match is juggling the searches for some topics weekly which is changing the results and screwing with the downloads making them less consistent and its been doing this for quite a while.

I've tried looking but can't really find out any information on this question:
On that stats page at IS, the RC counter updates whenever it wants. Does anyone know what the lag is on the counter? I keep getting increases in credits but my sales of the previous few days don't match those increases.
Thanks for any help,
Joseph

I rarely have my own threads, maybe because I just like reading or because I really don't have any value to add. But this is a question that came to mind:
How would iStock showing their financial statements make you feel?
I'm not saying that they are actually doing as poorly as they say they are - in fact, I don't think they are even close to negative net income, but would them opening up the books (with a reputable Chartered Accounting firm such as Ernst and Young) help you make a better decision?
There are lots of factors here, so obviously this situation needs to be taken lightly. I'm curious to see where the problems lie within their business model.
Thats my take - I won't actually have any reduced income, I might go up a step - however, I think it sucks for everyone else and things should change to a better, more sustainable system.

Not a lot of gear talk here anymore, just mainly random updates about sites with a big of speculation from members of whats going on and so on.
Thought I might mix it up with a conversation about gear.
I'm looking at grabbing myself another 430EX or 580EX II in the near future to pair with my current 430EX and at the same time I want to buy the Flex5 and Mini PocketWizards combo in an effort to essentially become more creative with light.
I'm going with this type of kit because its so very portable and not as large as studio strobes, but at the same time they are powerful enough to do the job most of the time. Also its easy to set up with interiors, which I've been getting many requests to do lately for interior decorators and such.
Another interesting piece is that they have enormous range - which I like in terms of shooting landscapes outside if I want to do something at night or want to try fancy lighting.
Anyone have any experience with these?
Does anyone use them or use the Radio Popper competitor version?
I will probably also grab an umbrella or 2 as well, and a couple of diffusers.

not worth my time and typing
nruboc and disorderly - go away
gostwyck - why do you post in my threads? also go away
lisa - thanks for posting, obviously this community sucks, so any time a thread comes up where it isn't about not getting accepted or how we are getting rid of our images for pennies or ridiculous rejections, it attracts the riff raff of the site. Your post was helpful and its one reason why I'm removing mine. Thanks for actually being helpful.

Just wondering what people think of lightboxes on iStock vs UBB links vs. neither.
Do people believe its worth the effort? A lot of the bigger contributors do take the time to do it, and I have up until now.

So I'm finally exclusive, and so far so good. I'm just announcing that because I will most likely not participate as much in the forums, I'd rather work on my skills and upload more often. Also I'd like to focus more time managing my portfolio, adding UBB links and stuff like that. I will pop in from time to time, just didn't want to alarm anyone that I'm missing not that anyone would notice anyways

Its starting to feel like this place is becoming an Internet Marketplace instead of a place where we can share information on microstock and argue about iStock exclusivity.
I don't want to be peppered with photosecrets stupid teleconferences and I would really like it if Leaf could please make a separate area where we can block it from our accounts for those people who want to peddle their 'services' here.
And if they break the rules, I would want the post deleted immediately and the user banned from the forum.
I'm just suggesting this because I'm very tired of seeing this place become a SecondLife for photographers where its just advertising, not good conversation about the industry - and I'm sure that I'm not the only one.

Hey all,
Leaving in 2 weeks for a 2 week trip through Spain starting in Lisbon.
Just wanted to know if anyone had any favourite places to photograph in:
Lisbon Seville Madrid Mallorca Valencia (will be going to the Arts and Sciences for sure!) and Barcelona for the F1 race
I've looked up all the interesting places online, but would like to hear from anyone who's actually been. Hopefully I can pull together a large portfolio of stock worthy images while I'm there too.

I am trying to prepare myself for exclusivity and I want to disable all my files, but they won't do that in bulk for me? I have over 1200 files on that site and thats ridiculous. They have a horrible interface when it comes to removing old files and no matter how much I argue with them, they don't do anything about it. It makes no sense.
It makes me hate dealing with them after a very good experience during my uploading time there

Hi all, Given that we have such a broad spectrum of talented photographers on this forum as well as some very good tech-savvy people, I'd like to invite you to check out my brand new website (first time I've ever done one) and I'd like for your opinions. Its not very microstock-based, I'd love to keep that a separate part, but its more for quality commercial stuff. www.josephgareri.comLet me know what you think, I'd love to hear it. Thanks, Joseph

Hi all,
I just bought an Epson 3800 and its amazing. Love printing with it. And everything I've done so far has come out spectacularly.
I have used bought and used Ilford's Galerie Gold Fibre Silk and Premium Luster by Epson.
Does anyone have any favourite papers for certain applications?
Landscape?
Portraits?
Just generally good paper?
I really was hoping that Kodak would release some of their Endura Metallic stuff for inkjet, but so far I can't really find it anywhere. Does anyone know if there is an inkjet paper that would mimic the Endura Metallic look?
Thanks

For all you guys to read http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/big-three.shtmlI have a 30D and a 5DII, and I love them both. And I can take photos just as technically good as your D3's, D3x's and A900s. Its time we focused on the photographers skills and maybe the glass in front of these insane machines Happy Holidays

Does anyone know anything at all about the status of the 5D2's and Canadian orders? It seems like we've been shafted as a country.

If my mirror on the 30D is a bit dirty, would that have any negative impact on its autofocus capabilities?
Just wondering because I just noticed a smear on it and it seems to be acting funny lately.
Thanks in advance,
JG

I accidentally ordered this from my distributor instead of a compact flash. I would like to get rid of it since I don't need it and I'm asking $40 USD + shipping (which is exactly what I bought it for)
If anyone is interested please let me know

Taking a break from the Canon vs Nikon argument, I'm going to pose a question: Lee vs Singh-Ray I'll say it up front, I'm leaning towards Singh-Ray. What I'm looking at is getting 2 or 3 of their P-size Neutral density grad (and 1 reverse ND grad) filters for landscape work because I would prefer to do it right in the camera and not have to worry too much about HDRing everything when I go on vacation next year. I would like to bring it home and go nuts on just processing the DNGs and keywording and uploading. However, what should I go for? Lee or Singh Ray? Does anyone use them? And what would you think would be the optimal densities? PS - I'm pre-ordering my MK II tomorrow I am a very happy camper

I would like to buy a good point and shoot for my girlfriend as she's going on exchange to Europe for 6 months and I'm wondering what would be your opinions on what would be a good poind and shoot to buy.
There is a budget, and I don't think that the G10 is in a good range in terms of price.
But I would like the camera to have its own Lithium battery pack - I hate AA batteries
Thats pretty much the only requirement.
I'm a Canon guy, but I'm open to suggestions. As well, if you know anyone who's got an older model thats still new thats awesome too.

Just about to buy myself the Lightroom 2 educational version. Just wanted to know if it allows for commercial work. Does it even matter?
It may be in breach of their 'rules' but if you look at it this way, if lets say I wasn't going to buy the educational version or the full retail because it was too expensive and I go and grab a very good, usable version from a torrent, then they lose out entirely.
That said, I'll be honest and say that I've done that with Photoshop before and I am not pleased with certain aspects such as no available new patches and there's no support for the product either. In the end, Bridge ends up doing funny things and there's nothing I can do about it. I want to buy a program legitimately this time around and take advantage of the educational discount. Does the Lightroom version do anything to the files if the user agreement indeed doesn't allow for commercial work?

On a note of stupidity,
I'd really appreciate if iStock would go about their reviewing with some consistency. They approved a photo I took and Photoshopped a lot to get a very grainy, grungy, gritty look a while back, so I went ahead and did a few more in that way. Now its not good enough and they are 'over-processed' but if anything, they are less processed than the original file accepted.
That original file has 10 or 12 downloads since uploading it and is getting more popular - so the market is there.
I don't get it. I don't think they do either, for other reasons.

Second submission is going in. How long does it usually take for them to have a quick peek and reject/accept?

« on: June 24, 2008, 10:40 »
Just wondering who has had the opportunity to submit to Photoshelter, if anyone has, and their opinions on it. Would like to know the requirements for submission as well before I start to delve further into this particular site
Thanks in advance,
Joseph

I have been submitting for years - I make a fair amount of money and I know what to expect. But this has been the most puzzling rejection simply because its for editorial at SS and, at first, they just reject for no reason.
It said nothing there. Then I re-upped the photos thinking that there was a mistake and rejected by accident and they were rejected again saying to e-mail someone at SS.
So I re-upped again thinking its some reviewer who doesn't have a clue. Get rejections for MODEL RELEASES on editorial? Thats a new one (I also checked the editorial boxes)
So I've finally e-mailed and asked what is going on. Reason I'm confused is that they released their red carpet for editiorial stuff and even though I didn't use that process I have photos for them - yet they get rejected.
By the way, DT has seen no problem with my photos - so i'm not that crazy
Anyone else experiencing this?
