The 2013 Microstock Industry Survey is now live.  It shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes if you have your numbers ready.  You can find it here

If you enjoyed the previous years results, please share it around (last year we had 750+ respondents).  It would be great if as many people as possible can take part so we can get the most accurate results possible.

The survey follows a nearly identical flow to previous years (with a few tweaks thanks to comments) as it is nice to compare results from year to year and I feel it asks the basic questions we are wondering without taking too long to answer.

For interest, here is last year's infographic and full results

As a thank you to everyone who responds there will be a random give-away again.  There are a number of prizes up for grabs.  There will be one winner for each prize.  Winners will be drawn randomly (using a random number generator).  Prizes cannot be exchanged for cash.

StockPerformer has offered a one year Eagle and one year Sparrow membership ($400 and $125 value)
ProImageExperts has offered a $500 image editing package and a $400 image editing package (2 winners)
MicrostockSubmitter has offered a 6 month unlimited subscriptions ($250 value)
MicrostockGroup will give a GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition ($399 value)

The giveaway is now over - winners announced here.

"Most any new phone would be fine for taking pictures."

Yeah, for FB pics  ;)

I do see the cell phones wiping out the low end digital cameras in the near future but not the middle to upper level dSLRs.

Yeah, but the OP is a graphic designer, likely looking for some quick snaps of things to fill in holes while they are comping together a piece or something.  They aren't shooting fighter jets ;)

yep.  most camera phones are getting good.  I am totally happy with the iPhone 5.  The Nokia Lumina seems like a very nice phone camera as well.

In regards to a filter on the front.  I just use the lens hood.  If you are paying that much for a lens, why wreck it with a cheap (or expensive) filter. [...]  You need some pretty bad scratching before it will affect the photo as well.  Stick a small piece from a post it note on your lens and see how much you notice it?  Now do you think you'll see the effects of a tiny scratch?
Is it just me or are those 2 statements kind of contradictory?  :D

how are they contradictory?  Maybe I am blind to my own statement.

24-70 for me too.  I use that lens the most I'd say.  Second in line is the 70-200 which is perhaps my favorite lens.  I would almost recommend that as the first lens but the 24-70 is a bit more versatile. Start with the 24-70 then start saving right away for the 70-200 :)

In regards to a filter on the front.  I just use the lens hood.  If you are paying that much for a lens, why wreck it with a cheap (or expensive) filter.  If the front piece of glass ever does get a very nasty scratch in it, you can always send it away for repair and get the front glass replaced - it's not like you need an entire new lens.  You need some pretty bad scratching before it will affect the photo as well.  Stick a small piece from a post it note on your lens and see how much you notice it?  Now do you think you'll see the effects of a tiny scratch?

I had my 70-200 fall out of my bag once when switching lenses.  It felt from backpack height onto concrete (It didn't have the lens hood on).  It dented the rear metal a bit and damaged the IS but it kept on working.  I ended up having to send it for repair.. but they were able to repair it... an expensive fall but cheaper than replacing the entire lens - they are built very very well.

MicrostockSubmitter / Re: property releases?
« on: January 04, 2014, 16:57 »
After reading abou the importance of property releases, especially since the I stock update, I was wondering where to attach my property releases in StockSubmitter? Is there a tab that I'm not seeing? should I add it with my model releases? I feel like it's going to be very confusing and cause rejection in some agencies

thanks!

When you add a release in the software you specify if it is a model or property release.

Dreamstime.com / Re: 6.93$ for HD Footage what a shame
« on: December 29, 2013, 18:51 »
I have avoided this problem by simply not uploading my video to Dreamstime.  There is no point supporting a start up (in regards to Video, Dreamstime is still a start up) that has lower prices and lower commissions than the industry leader (Pond5).

looks great.  thanks for the tip

I stopped uploading the weekend before christmas and will start uploading agian the first work week in Jan.

Shutterstock (and probably others) rank images by the number of downloads.  New images get a boost so I want my uploads to happen when people are actually purchasing images.

a bit off topic but I am getting quite a few spam registrations on my site these days..

I just don't get it.. Why would anyone want to create a spam account on my site? since the comments are disabled and the only thing a registered user can do is "buy" images?..

Seriously, why register just for the sake of registering?  Am I missing something?

... probably because the spam bots don't know that comments are disable.  They just go through their auto spam process.

what about measuring our thoughts about the contributors relations and reliability of the sites.
It can be done in a polite, and yet still very telling way.

I added a question about an all-round favorite and least favorite site which would encompass this a little.

Something around self-hosting (Symbio or otherwise) and perhaps POD sites e.g. FAA. It seems more and more are earning good money from these sources and so I feel they should be included in the survey if they are replacing dropping sales from agencies. Over coming years we can then see any swing occurring. This information will be vital to an individual's strategy for future years.

yep, added this already (self hosted)

Site Related / Building the 2013 Survey - Any New Questions?
« on: December 20, 2013, 05:34 »
I'm busy getting the survey ready for the 2013 year.  Are there any questions you want asked that weren't asked last year.  I can't promise I'll add them as I want to keep the survey as short as possible (it is already plenty long) but if there is a couple that many people want to see in the survey I'd be happy to add it.  Here are the questions from last year.

If someone makes a suggestion and you like it.. give them a heart and I'll consider those ideas with the most hearts

I don't think you can rename them at all but you can hide them so only the correct one shows up in your list

Symbiostock - Hosting / Re: Where can I host my Symbiostock site?
« on: December 18, 2013, 17:28 »
I'm about to set up a Synology disk station for backup and storage. The unit also has website hosting capabilities, so I want to know if this would be Symbio compatible?

See here for information on how it works:http://www.synology.com/en-global/support/tutorials/480

Thanks

It lists WordPress as one of the tested apps, so that's a start :)

ImageMagick as the image processor isn't listed, but can't see any reason it wouldn't work.

I'd suggest you see if you can find reports of other users successfully operating WordPress sites on this platform (what you wouldn't want is a trail of reports that it sort of works but this or that plugin doesn't). If that looks good, why not give it a try and let us know what happens?

I am installing the system anyway, for backup and storage, so I may as well give it a try. I don't really have much of a clue how to go about tit, but I have nothing to lose by trying. I'll let you know if it works!

For playing around it might work and might be fun but isn't very practical in real world terms.  The benefits you receive from renting space form a web host is
- MUCH BETTER internet line.  Most internet connections don't have a very fast UP connection... down might be fast(ish) but up isn't very fast.  Even if it is fast, it isn't going to compare to what a proper web host would offer.
- Up time - most web hosts would have a 99.9% up time.  What happens when your power goes out, someone unplugs the server to do some vacuuming or it simply just crashes.
- Static IP ... not all ISP give out static ip's.  There are work arounds but they are a big pain.  If you have a dynamic IP address it will be a real head ache trying to host a server from your house
- Shared hosting is actually pretty smart.  A bunch of people are essentially getting together, buying a speedy server (a machine made especially for the task) and splitting the costs.
- +++ a few more arguments I haven't thought of...

Hi everyone, I think it should be a requirement to link to symbiostock.info if one wants to be included in the global search engine, otherwise those websites will only receive and receive and not give anything back to the community. Or, if they choose to "go solo", they shouldn't be added to the global search engine either.

a quick question: I haven't added Dashphoto.eu to my network, yet it appears both on my network page and in my search results. How come?

I think whoever makes site X should be free to run it how they want.
If symbiostock.info wants to run the site in a way that requires people to back-link to them to be listed in the directory, then that is fair and that is their decision.  If they want to just create a directory regardless of backlinks.. that should be OK as well.  Both ways of running the site make sense and neither way is more fair/unfair

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia payout delays?
« on: December 18, 2013, 01:28 »

I'm in dolgachov's camp.  2-3 weeks seems pretty on par.  I got my payment this month on the 14th and requested on the 1st.

So two weeks then.   I wouldn't get concerned until it goes over two weeks.  I request payouts the first and 15th of every month and the payout is always there in time for me to make the next request.  The last time I had to wait over two weeks was more than a year ago.

Seems really odd that different people are waiting different lengths of time ???

I just re-looked at all the payout dates for this year from fotolia.  I had one 3 days wait, a few 8-10 day waits and a handful of 13-16 day waits.

it just looks like they have a coding problem when trying to sync up to LeadPages which looks like what they were using on their landing page.
The site was using ktools (at least it looked very very much like it) - perhaps they updated the software and crashed things?

1. i believe Lisa is stating WE are having an issue, being paid much later then she does. i have no problem with this. seems like you do.

I was just surprised to hear you are typically waiting for payments much longer than other people I've spoken with.  For me it was very untypical to wait longer than two weeks.

Sounds like you are happy with your arrangement though, so who am I to say you shouldn't be?    :)
