iStockPhoto.com / Re: Clipping paths missing?
« on: May 04, 2011, 13:54 »
Funny IS told you that on the phone - I do remember there being something in the forum that said the clipping path was only available in the largest size (whatever you originally uploaded).

Some sites strip them out (Dreamstime), Some don't (iStock).

I phoned iStock and they assured me that they are included on all sizes there.

@lthn:

The reason you push the Levels all the way, is to check for floating pixels that might not be evident at a normal exposure. You don't actually save that level change, just observe.

Clipping paths are useful at all sizes. Some sites strip them out of lower resolutions, (Dreamstime) others don't (iStock). If you download a photo and make a selection from the clipping path, there will be no floating pixels.

Take your pen tool and carefully outline the edge of your isolation. You've just created a path. Save the path. Convert the path to a selection. Feather the selection 2 or 3 pixels. Go to Layer>New>Layer via Copy. Now you have a clean edge all the way around the isolation. Create a new white layer under your new isolated layer, and merge.

By the way, go back to your Path and convert it to a Clipping Path. Isolated objects with Clipping Paths are much sought after.

I like this.

I used to call myself a photorealistic illustrator back when all my work was acylic paint and colored pencils on illustration board. I shot all the reference photos.
Now it's all digital. The reference photos become part of the illustration with enhancing done with airbrushing and cloning. All of my work is a composite.
I call it Photo-illustration.

Nothing is certain. Companies get bought and sold or go under. Ebb and flow.

Here are the steps: Once you create the path, you must Save Path. (Path 1) Then go to the drop down menu in the Paths palette, and click on Clipping Path. You will notice that the title "Path 1" changes to an outline font.

Yes, I have proof. Some of my sales result from searches the have "clipping path" in them. When I buy from microstock, if given the choice between two similar images I will always choose the one with a clipping path. It's just less work. Besides, if you have already gone to the trouble of creating an isolation with a path, why not include the path? It's not any extra work.

Improper isolation on the box. There are stray pixels all around the edges, but especially at he bottom where the ribbon meets the base. It would never be accepted at iStock.

Here's how you check it: Open a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and move the Brightness slider all the way to the left. Zoom in and you'll see floating pixels.

Seeing a portfolio validates him (or her). It gives some creditability that we are not dealing with some 12 year old locked away in the basement trolling away.

I should have asked to please see a portfolio link. It would have been nicer.

Sorry, but it's hard to take your rant seriously when we don't know who you are. Provide a link to your iStock portfolio. As of now there is no way to even know if you are a real photographer, or just a troublemaker.

Please educate me. What does this mean? I'm watching and I'm selling 4 pics a minute today. A lot of duplicates. How is this bad? I've made $35 and it's only 10:00am.

593
Good for you. I respect your stance. iStock's not the only game in town.

594
You don't have to accept it. Quit. Vote with your feet. Put your money where your mouth is.

I have a portfolio set up with Smugmug and sell directly from there. You have to earn $500 before they pay out. I like the way you can create your own watermark. I don't get much traffic. I wish google would lead image requests there, but I guess everyone is trying to figure out how to get traffic to their website.

I have the same portfolio set up on pBase and do get occasional image searches directed there. I provide a link back to my Smugmug site.

The bottom line is always profit. I belong to the top 8 stock sites. They all turn a profit. Some turn more profit than others. Some are more fair than others. But it's not good business to wish that the least fair go away, on the speculation that I might turn more profit at another site. There will always be a site that is the least fair. If iStock goes away then some other site will be the least fair. So what then? Go after that site?

If you don't like a company's business practices don't work for that company. I recommend that buyers visit the site that earns me the best percentage. I can't support the elimination of of my second biggest earner just because their percentage is low.

598
It does seem kind of hypocritical to bad mouth a company, that you actually promote, by allowing them to sell your photos. If you work for an "evil" company, are you not evil also?

599
Yeah, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

You want to bring down a company that paid you $25,000?
