General Stock Discussion / Re: Featurepics. Opinions please.....
« on: September 07, 2007, 17:33 »

Some people do better there but I think they have their own websites and send clients to FP with links.  If I had time, I would set up my own site and do that but at the moment there is too much to do.

I never considered that.   Maybe I should.  thanks, ss.   8)-tom

BigStock usually my 3rd or 4th seller (swapping out with DT).  Only outdone by IS and SS.  For 2007, lightyears  ahead of  LO, FT, FP and others.

I like BigStock and continue to upload there.    8)-tom

Went with FP in Jan 2007...  uploaded only pix that were highest sellers with SS, DT, BigStock and now IS.  Used the same keywords.  Kept the portfolio small, didn't want to invest a mega-amount of time uploading... Started out with $3... later dropped to a dollar, then to 25 cents, just to see if anyone would bite.   Nada.    By July,  I had minimal views (3 dozen or less),  no sales.       So, at the end of July I deleted all my pix.  My account is still open, maybe I'll try again in the future with some fresh work.   In the meantime, it's one less site I have to check.

I know, perhaps not the clearest thinking... but....   I figured, I  should've sold ... one?   Then again, the views weren't there, even at 25 cents...

and that's my experience, Hatman! No Ciderella story for this kid.

Just because a company is a non-profit does not mean it doesn't make money.  As a matter of fact, non-profits are some of the largest companies in the world.

Even smaller organizations have revenues in the millions.

Amen!!  I deal with this nonsense in my 'day job'...  people looking at the multi-billion the company I work for makes ..and they, always looking for handouts..    Outfits that very well may be  'non-profit',  yet rake in millions in operating capital..     Always remember, that 'non-profit'  is   AFTER  taking care of all the operating expenses..  like  heavy 2 and 3 digit salaries,  palacial offices, company car fleets and more!    LOL

Free is only my favorite price...   when I'm buying something!!  LOL   8)-tom

Never.... seen it like this.   I usually have less than 24 hours review...  even down to  the first pic in a batch is reviewed while I'm still uploading others.   Really slow... maybe it is the height of vacation season at  StockXpert.??    8)-tom

Well I don't have an mega-portfolio yet like most of you, so every pic counts right now...
I can foresee a time when I will eliminate some of my earlier work, as they too are just  'photos'  as someone mentioned. Heck, now, some of that stuff is even embarrassing...   LOL :D...   on the other hand, the reviewer on duty the day I uploaded it must have thought it was okay....?  LOL

None-the-less,  I am continually surprised  how often a pic that I uploaded 8 months to a year ago... that never sold...  suddenly sells and then, will sell 3 or 4 times more in the immediate future.  In that,  I am hesitant to delete 'non-sellers'.    8)-tom

iStockPhoto.com / Re: The curse of overfiltering
« on: September 05, 2007, 16:40 »
We found this file over filtered from its original appearance/quality.'

'This file contains artifacting when viewed at full size. This technical issue is commonly created by the quality settings in-camera or in post-processing.'

The only reasons I get rejection at IS!  ... personally, Leaf, your 'edited' pic of the climber is the one that catches my eye.  The other, while a good capture,  I'd pass right over in a search.  The rich colors and balance makes me stop to look.
I don't use any noise reduction software! Yet I get bagged for it.  I do balance color and contrast.  On some landscape shots, I will do a very minimal color saturation, but not much. Just a tweak if... it needs it.

I agree with Lizards comment.  I shoot a lot of landscape/travel/nature pix.  When I first entered this biz,  it sure looked to me like the  'over-enhanced/over processed'  pix were the ones that sold the most.  Especially the unatural skies that have been gradiated from dark blue to almost black at the top. Waterfalls/streams/rapids where the water was blurred to enhance the sense of motion...when all the rocks have the same size/shape/texture, motion in rapid over them that was clearly cloned or copy/pasted.  etc...  Even completly fake water reflections to the point of it being obviously 'shopped'..  (I'm not talking about true shots, there are some out there that came out of the camera, I'm talking about those that are obviously PS'd)

Personally,  I don't understand the point of 'designer options'.  In Leaf's shot for perfect example.  I'd buy the processed shot.  I would probably not buy the unprocessed shot.  In a scan of thumbnails in a lightbox of climbers on a rockface... I wouldn't stop on the unprocessed shot, I'd focus in on those that stood out.

I always felt the color rich photos were the best.  Hey... the sun doesn't always cooperate... .nature isn't always that color intense,  sharp,  or contrasted.  Sometimes it needs a little help.   And all this tweaking has been going on since the day film was invented.  It's just easier to do it in the computer than it used to be in the darkroom or lab.

However..... I'm going back to my original files and trying some of the good advice given above.  IS seems to be  the site where I'll be making the biggest bang for the buck money-wise.  I need to grow my porfolio there ... hence, please them more. 8)-tom

Adobe Stock / Re: Something Fishy Going On....
« on: September 03, 2007, 22:05 »
Coincidence or not?

Sole reason I bailed out of FT was something 'fishy'.

Every time I would build up some credits in sales... they would all disappear as purchases that I had supposedly made.

Never made a purchase at all.  This happened to me 3 times.  After exchanging emails back and forth with Chad B.  and a phone call to FT... all my credits were given back.  But with no explanation as to how someone was purchasing photos with my money on my account.   I yanked all my pix off FT except for one.  It sits there selling once in awhile along with my miniscule credits. I'm waiting to see if it happens again.

Off the wall comment time....

I'm just surfing thru the latest posts... and I have to say...  I really enjoy the heck out of this site!!!   I have learned so much in my first year here!! I think it's great how everyone here is so quick to help out the newbies.. and give so freely of advice to even the 'oldies' if they should have questions on a topic they don't fully understand!

When I first got into this crazy game I figured it would be a real cut-throat, competitive madness.  I don't know about the rest of the photog world, but here on MSG,  it turned out to be just the opposite...

Just a great bunch of people here!  And I'm happy to be in the middle of them, a member of the MSG family.    Thanks, Leaf!

Okay,   my dumb comment is over, sorry, I just had a sentimental moment....   LOL   ..  now back to business..     8)-tom

Hi,

We are newbie and before we introduce ourselfs - please excuse our bad english. We are  brazilian  and german and living in France. So we are always struggling with the languages.

Welcome to the gang!!!   Your english is just fine...  it sure is a lot better than my french/german...  So I am happy you are willing to use english.

My russian is a bit rusty....    but I'll give it a try...

also beware of the difference between the american english meaning of a word vs the british english meaning.  ie. potato chip vs crisp, elevator vs lift.  wikipedia has a good write up on some of the differences to help you.

LOL  ..I was just  joking about this on another thread.... even though we both speak "english"....   the lingua franca of the U.S. and U.K. is not always interchangable or understandable...  and can sometimes lead to humorous results...  LOL  8)-tom

A friend told me of an English guy he met in a trip to the USA, they were somewhere in the middle of nowhere and sat for lunch, when the waitress came and the Englishman placed his order, she laughed and said "Your English is so funny", to which he replied "I speak English, you speak funny".

Yes I know there might be still some spelling mistakes..

Freeze...   I didn't know for months after I became a member of MSG that english wasn't your prime language...   and I only found out in a thread one day when you mentioned you were from Germany...
Your english is as good as the average American's... in fact, let's be serious...   it's probably better than most Americans in this day and age...   LOL LOL       btw,  I'm American...  I speak with them every day, so I know... LOL

Great website....!!  It's bookmarked on my machine!   Looking forward to  it's growth...  and don't sweat your english, it's perfect!! 8)-tom

p.s.   I am amazed at  the majority of those here where english isn't there prime language.  I lived in Europe for 3 years and did my best to learn the local languages  (italian,  german, greek, spanish,  and a really hard one,  british english, LOL --- what's that old saying,  Britain and America, two countries separated by a common language? I even have a degree in russian )   My point...  any here that feel insecure about their english...... shouldn't...  it has been my experience in my travels around this planet that Americans (U.S.) are the most  bi-lingually ingnorant people in the world.  So... kudos to you non-english folks... and dont worry about the occassional mispelled word....  the average American cant spell either.. that's why we invented spell-check... though we usually neglect to use it..   LOL
My compliments to all non-english speaking members and ....to those few that do struggle with it, you have my respect and admiration for trying your best. I think we get your points.  Keep it up!!!  I'm  thankful I don't have to use my German, Italian, Spanish, Greek... etc...   it sucks!

hope I haven't ticked off any of my fellow americans...   LOL :D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Nikon or Canon?

Hi Tom,

I've had an A620 for almost a year and like it very much.  Of course the XTi/400D I've just bought is much better, but the A620 allowed me some nice pics.  Here are some:

Maybe you've got a faulty camera?

Well I sure can't argue with success!  Nice work!!
I can't honestly say that every shot that came out of the thing was bad....  it seemed hit and miss.  I didnt have a lot of luck with the thing myself...   could be a bum camera....   then again, could be us too?

I should modify my original post on Canon's...  Every Canon I've owned since 1969 has been an SLR. All of those I have been very pleased with.

But  about a year ago I got my wife an A620..  I'm not thrilled with it at all.  The quality of the shot is just not there even though it's more mp than my Rebel... I regret buying it and wish I had just spent a few more bucks and bought her a rebel or xt..
Soon as I get my 5D, I'll pass my Rebel on to her and sell the 620.  Her former pocket camera was a Sony Cybershot... now that little thing took 'kick-butt'  pictures... just too small.   -tom

I still get reviewed in less than 24 hours... and sometimes while I'm still uploading...   I wonder, how large a batch are you folks uploading where it's taking days to review?  I only upload a few ( 3-5 in a batch) at a time. Maybe that has something to do with it???  -tom

Well, Canon have made their official announcements, and mighty impressive it is too, with a whole new range of pocket cameras, lenses and of course the 40D and 22mp monster.

will be a great little camera ..........if you want to shoot license plates from the  space station.......   I agree, it is getting a bit ridiculous.

I've been shooting Canon since 1969 and I've had no problems with a single one I've had. And I can tell you,  I beat the crap out of them. They've been dropped in rivers, dumped in snow, hiked thru dust storms, desert heat, blizzards.... and keep on shooting for me.  On the other hand, I've a lot of friends that are Nikon people and they can tell the same stories (many times they were right alongside me on shoots).  You can't really go wrong with either one.  They're both top of the line!
The point was made, that the glass is just as important, if not more.  And if you have a lot of money invested in the lenses...  why jump ship?
Nikon vs Canon....  six of one, half dozen of the other has been my experience. They are both great  shooters with great lenses and top of the line accessories.

     I'm shopping now for a 5D.

I'm not sure there is anything significant here.
One of the images I uploaded on 26 July (so it was approved and went on sale some time later) has already sold 7 times.

It's all ebb and flow, as they say.

same here....  selling old and new.... I'm not setting the world on fire with sales,  but... as with Bateleur,  from a batch last week, had a pic sell a couple times already...  on the other hand, yes, my older pix continue to sell at a faster rate.    'which way's the wind blowing' may be the answer.   -tom
