I would think the more generic the better. If I could produce a lifestyle shot that would still sell 10 years from now I would be very happy. A designer emailed me once when I first started and said something like: "If you get rid of the jewelry you will have a longer shelf life and reach more buyers". So anything that can date an image might not be such a good thing in the long run. to each his own though.

Or if you only shoot nekkid (Adult) people there won't be a problem either  ;D

But my most recent work heavily involves jewelry. As a matter of fact the gems were the primary purpose of the shoot.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sharpening an image..
« on: February 05, 2009, 16:38 »
Partially depends on what you are shooting with.
My Canon 20 has a very strong AA filter and all images MUST be sharpened.

OTOH, my Canon 5D has a very weak AA filter and seldom requires any sharpening at all. If anything, at times images look a bit too sharp - in the case of people that lack perfect skin  :-\

I find it disturbing. I guess that means it is a very good image.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Why I hate subs
« on: January 16, 2009, 17:45 »
This is the very reason that I closed all my other accounts and became an IS exclusive. I could not stand the idea that a large file could be purchased for pennies.

I may not make as much this way, but I only have to upload to one site.
And when I do sell a large file I get several dollars not 35 cents.

I use a Mac Pro with 4 internal hard drives.
I do not keep any files on the primary drive as I reserve that drive for applications only.

I installed the trial version of Prostock-Master and for the life of me I could not figure out how to get it to see my non-primary hard drives.

Since I don't have the time for steep learning curve software, uninstalled it.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Time to cull your portfolio's..
« on: January 04, 2009, 03:06 »
I have had several old images sell recently that I would not have had a sale for if I had culled them.  8)

IS does cull old non-selling images; it is called the Dollar Bin.
And now with the new three tier system coming out, I think I will take a wait and see attitude.

Could be the majority of so-so stuff winds up in the bottom rung and will sell for peanuts, but at least they will sell.

I will admit that I have a couple of old stinkers in my port, I have been waiting for them to go to the dollar bin for quite some time now.

General Stock Discussion / Re: how do you measure your success ?
« on: January 03, 2009, 18:35 »
I will call it a success when I can comfortably transition out of my day job and shoot for a living.
I don't mean relying on microstock alone, but a combination of Micro/Macro and assignment work.

Anything short of that, just makes it a hobby that pays for itself  ;)

I have mixed feelings about JPG mag going under.
But really, did you ever look through an issue on a news stand or your local bookstore?

The content was mostly aweful  :P
Really, who would spend money on such a publication?
I think it would have failed no matter what the economic situation was.
It just failed FASTER because of the current situation.

iStockPhoto.com / i think i am liking this new best match
« on: December 30, 2008, 20:59 »
My very small portfolio (I have 273 files) usually gets from zero up to a whopping two downloads on any given day.
Today, I had four!

OK Sean, no snickering  :D

Considering this is two days before New Years eve and should be very, very slow I am optimistic that this new algorithm is actually helping the buyers find the files that they are looking for.

Lets all keep our fingers crossed that this is the real deal.

Hmmm,

I just did a sort by best match.
The very first file is one of my best sellers.
Everything else on the first page are my newest files.
Some have sold once and some are so new that they have no sales yet at all.

I don't do vectors, so I cannot comment on them being pushed back.

"ahahah
one more will start to hate me for the example I'm gonna bring today
I used to work for a professional advertising photography studio.  My boss was shooting a beverage commercial  and the graphic designer have used one of the shutterstock cherry picture along with commissioned product shot in final design. Do you think my boss has felt frighten by microstock overtake in the industry because they didn't ask him to shoot simple cherry picture as well. Well no, because he knows he will be all ways called to shoot products and will be paid very well for that. He doesn't dedicate himself for generic shots of object isolated on white. But once again he didn't feel threatened because he knows his price and because he is very professional. So... in-your-face. Do assignments if you want more than peanuts for your shots or don't complain that nobody wants to pay thousands for your "cherries isolated on white" kind of shots."

Ummm,
I guess I should mention that the LCD screen shot was not an 'isolated on white' bunch of fruit  ;)
In reality it was a very professionally shot and edited photo of a beautiful young blond woman having the time of her life.

I made an assumption that the LCD shot was purchased in XXL size so that it would hold its resolution on a huge screen. Maybe I am mistaken about this, since I really don't know what sort of image quality those monster screens require.

Balboa park has many photo op areas.
The gaslamp district at night is busy with youthful nightlife.
The view across the harbor from shelter island is a good bet too.

Who says they're from IS?  ;)

I assume from the wink that you are just kidding.
But truthfully, the images that I was referring to are all from IS exclusives whose work I am quite familiar with  8)

Its a pretty good bet that there are a lot of other images out there that were also from micros. Its just that I am not all
that familiar with everyones work. Waaaaay too many shots out there in circulation for me to memorise everything  ;D

Franky, I stay as far away from 'Lost Wages' Nevada as I possibly can most of the time.  :)

iStockPhoto.com / Las Vegas loves iStock!
« on: December 17, 2008, 22:37 »
Well, after spending just two and a half days in 'Sin City' I can unequivocally state that Las Vegas loves to use IS images.

Yes, that town of wretched excess, unbridled kitsch and glitz galore. A city where a bowl of Vietnamese Pho' soup ($5.00 almost anywhere else) goes for $16.00. This most over-the-top place on the planet has gone 'on the cheap' and plastered microstock all over the place  ;D

I saw at least seven IS shots used throughout the shopping plazas where I was staying. They were printed large as life and plastered on walls. These were fashion and spa type images, as you might imagine.
The real shocker came as I was riding down the strip in a taxi.
There on a giant LCD screen flashed an enormous IS image, soon to be replaced by text exclaiming what a wonderful time I would have at such and such club/lounge and then another image and on and on.
