I can't imagine any reason they would do this.  Walmart doesn't get together with Target and Kmart to pay suppliers, ya know?

Next time Sjlocke comes up and tells you to read a library before you start on stock, kindly remind him about Amanda and Yuri.
Both of them started with a cheap, point and shoot camera, did not have a clue about photography and had to google basic principles like 'blur' or 'out of focus' in order to understand rejections' reasons.
Today Yuri is a millionaire and Amanda is doing pretty well herself.
Actually, they're both doing (a lot ) better than Sjlocke, regardless of the numbers of photography books read.

Thanks Anna, for singling me out from the rest of the majority who said the OP should learn the basics of how to work a camera before worrying about submitting, as well as the rest of your snarky comments.  Nice.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Bidding for photography job
« on: January 13, 2009, 18:03 »
I've never bid on a job, but from what I've read, I would charge $75 an hour, and something like $250 to release the rights to the images.

Microstock imposes certain rules which will not allow to produce mind blowing photography, therefore you can't possibly expect high returns unless there are dodgy dealings going on. Which I think there are, anyway.

Mind-blowing photography != high returns (necessarily)

I refer to this metric as lifetime earnings but I think it's a great way to think about images in your portfolio. Another metric that I think would be useful is grouping a shoot together and looking at the lifetime earnings for the shoot and time to breakeven on a particular shoot as well.

Abso-smurf-ly!  Would be great.

You cannot license celebrity or any other people type images without a model release on iStock.

When shooting microstock should I be using Manual, Shutter Priority, or Aperture Priority?

The situation tells you how you should shoot it.  Nothing to do with microstock.

White balance, aperture, etc. - this is all really basic camera stuff.  Step back from worrying about stock and go take a class or read a book.

This might be of interest to the thread:

A decent list with some thoughts on timing.

Should be of great use to anyone competing with the author of the article ;) ( ie. selling stock ) .

Simplified Rights Managed, sort of.

It is not against Istock exclusive policy to contribute images to other Traditional agencies just not other microsites, it is not even against Alamy terms to put the same RF Miro images on thier site and similars as RM, but is not welcomed by other and could lead to crediting back a sale.
David :)

It is absolutely against iStock exclusive policy to contribute images to other agencies, traditional or otherwise, if you are licensing RF.  There is no question about that.

7237
You may not be allowed to sell your Fotolia account to someone, but you can sure as heck deactivate the account, sell the imagery to someone else, and they can then upload it as the copyright holder.

Ok, you've got a slightly out of focus isolated pair of apples.  The second might be a bit sharper.

There ya go.

I agree.  Editorial should be "what is there", not "I took the time to stop and ask permission".  Buyers using editorial inappropriately is another matter.

Sounds ridiculous to me.  If it's a real event or news story, and not just a grab you really should have gotten a release for, then it seems silly.

Newbie Discussion / Re: New to stock photography........pls help
« on: January 07, 2009, 13:22 »
Hello everyone this is my 1st topic here.
I want to do that so called "stock photography" :)

do you have any tips to share withme?
what site should I work with?
can I upload the same photos on different sites?
how many photo should I upload?
what type of photos do these sites need?
how much do you make from stock photography

C'mon, you need to work a bit harder than that to earn the serious knowledge of those here.  What research have you done into your questions so far, and what were the answers you found?  Did you google a bit?  Search the forums?  Do you have a camera?

Also, as an iStock exclusive, what does LS do, that DeepMeta doesn't show in its stats section?  What I would like is a way to see trends, ie., my series on X is down overall for Y period.  So I know to research why.  Like green or red arrows by images.  I would also like to know how much X series or image has made for Y period.

I am not at liberty to discuss my ban from istock. If i can post again on istock next month i shall still post on this forum as the thought of annoying two groups of people at the same time stimulates me no end!

Well, make sure you clean up afterwards...

I would have expected it to pick up a bit more by now, but maybe the late holiday last week has affected things...

They are separate programs.

By the way, I learned 3d with Inifi-D on a PowerMac, circa 1994.  I switched when we got a new home computer, since the rest of the family had Windows.  At Disney, we used Alias/Maya on SGI Unix stations, and then to HP Linux machines.  I know Dreamworks has a huge deal with HP as well.  We used Macs for the productions manager to run tracking software and such.

7249
I am perfectly happy with my HP laptop running Vista, with a 17" screen and the Adobe Suite.  Everything runs fine, nothing crashes, and it was cheaper than a Mac, plus I didn't need to repurchase or find all my existing software for a different system.

I would just stick with what you currently have.

Time to cull your apostrophes.

Heh-heh.

With the new relevancy factor in the best match sort, it doesn't really matter.  Unpurchased files should slide to the back of appropriate keyword searches anyways.
