Just received notification that my application to submit to iStock has been accepted - on the first attempt.
I can honestly say I wouldn't have been able to do it without the advice and assistance provided by members of this forum - both in the forum and by direct correspondence.
My sincere thanks to all.
Ed

Since it's been quiet over the holidays I've clicked their "What's Selling" tab a few times to see what pops up. The images change every day which I thought was great, sales are happening. Then I noticed a few images appearing every other day - great again because this must mean multiple sales of those images....but no, only one sale. So why do these images keep appearing in "What's Selling" when they've only sold once.
And reading back through this thread I have to wonder; what is selling?

I can't be arsed with new start ups right now. All that effort to get work up on the site and very few views never mind downloads, PictureNation,Mostphotos,Cutcaster etc.
Agree wholeheartedly with Mr Locke and Mr Oates.

1) Learn how to create vectors 2) Learn how to create videos/sound samplers 3) Work out how to make money out of citizen journalism
Good luck everyone and Happy New Year.
PS. Thanks to those members who have written to me inside and outside of this forum with advice and words of encouragement. Very much appreciated. I hope we'll meet one day.

This is pure and simple fraud to sell a product - which is why it got clobbered in the UK.
Some people stood up and said the Emporer was stark naked. There will be more.

I needed a very short tripod but all i had were too long. Improvise - a roll of bathroom paper served the purpose. Anybody else got a quick fix when you don't have exactly what you need?
What? For when you don't have a tripod - of for when you don't have any bathroom paper? For a tripod I sometimes use my camera bag, but if I'm shooting wide and low have even used the toe of my boot. A friend uses one of those inflatable pillows for use on long flights...it folds down flat but you have to blow it up for use. Too much of a chore for me.

I've got a portfolio on RedBubble and haven't sold anything. However I have bought three framed prints and a calendar there from artists whose work I really admire. In case you're interested what someone like me buys -
Crikey. You won't be buying any of my stuff then mate. This is way above my skillset and I don't have enough hours in the day to work images to that level.
Thanks for the info though. I have some ideas for tee shirts, with the help of my skater girl niece

Re RedBubble - been with them about 3 months now with 70 images and have had a sorry 7 sales to date, mostly cards a few prints. Have been studying "successful sales" and I reckon 70-75% of sales are graphic work for skateboarders, star wars freaks and manic depressive goths. Mostly tee shirts I'm about twenty years too old to wear.
Photos that do sell are severely manipulated and not my style so I'll be adding stuff as and when I feel like it.
It would be interesting to know who the "million" people a month are on their front page blurb.

I am using keywording page from Yuri so I think I am close to current trends for a subject :-) I am selecting images that are visually similar to mine and then uncheck keywords that are irrelevant from suggested top 50. I tend to have around 30
I use that too but have started to lean more on the ProStockMasters help.
I'm too new at this to offer a definitive answer. I've heard from Admins's at DT that anything more than 15 is a waste and can reduce your placement in a search?
I struggle to find any more than 15-20 keywords in total, whether relevant or conceptual for some images but with others I can't stop writing. I agree with Mr Lock, it depends on the site and the image and whilst I grab all the help I can, it's one of those things that comes with practice. I generally look at other images on stock to see if I'm missing something obvious/useful.

No because someone would have to pay for the clearing house and I can't see that happening. If a number of agencies did get together on this they would find a way to pass the cost onto us the contributor and not the buyer. That's how MS works.

I see a lot of noise and artefacting in the 100% image.
I'm also new to the world of microstock and researched a great deal into quality requirements and camera/lens capabilities. Others may disagree but the general consensus is you will limit your success with anything less than a 10MP DSLR and a quality lens or two. There are images on stock sites taken with non-DSLR cameras but the quality control is now extremely tight for new photographers trying to get into the top sites. It's a cost but you have to invest in the very best you can afford in my experience.

Stop posting these links! I feel so inferior!!
sorry to do this to you - but on those days when I can't see a picture for love nor money I go to this site, put on a sturdy pair of walking shoes and head out into the streets. I don't get a lot of stock work out of it but all work and no play.....sometimes I'll take a DSLR but other times it's an old Fuji F30 or an even older Olympus Stylus Epic. http://www.in-public.com/

There are so many...but lately I've been enjoying work from Kevin Meredith (Lomokev) in the UK He's a Flickr darling and the site links to his folio. Made his name by being voted one of the top LOMO photographers in the world, but uses everything from a pinhole to a 5D. Don't know if he shoots stock but he does shoot for corporate organisations, has a book out and travels the world. http://lomokev.com/

simple question to cutcaster, how long does it take to get approved, its neen a few days for me, and also the FTP does not work...keeps giving me error messages..
My recent experience has been 5-6 days. Although one image was approved in under three hours!!!

The forum is still there if you go through the Sitemap at the bottom of the web page - but that's the only way I can see. Probably why there is very little traffic on it.

I visited the Getty Gallery in London today where they are currently displaying about 50 Flickr photographs. In general they are vastly different from traditional RF concept shots. They remind me more of contemporary art photography by the likes of Alec Soth, Candida Hofer, Stephen Shore etc.
The standard is exceptional - worth seeing if you are in London - East Castle St just off Oxford Circus.

Again, thanks for the feedback everyone. I like the premise of Cutcaster, as do most responders on this thread it seems. I also agree a few sales would be encouraging and would motivate me to upload more and more often.
Perhaps Cutcaster could give us some encouraging percentages around the following:
a) sales growth b) client base c) site visits etc

oh well. I can see my views have jumped a little but I'm wondering, with most of my images priced at $10 plus, whether I ought to go in and drop the lot to around $5 (if I can find a way to do it in bulk).
It's either a pricing problem for potential buyers or there are no potential buyers - and I'm not going to wait around for much longer to find out.
Your feedback has been greatly appreciated.

I've had one of my images up on their front page this week where they have a revolving 5 feature pics - which is nice and might bring some buyers my way - but on balance I haven't made enough money to buy a new lens cap out of this site.
Is anybody selling here?

I know stock is a 365 day enterprise but I'm curious about other photographer's and their preferences when it comes to seasons. My preference is September through to December. I find the autumn colours drive me out into the streets and woods. A blue sky seems more vivid (less haze I suppose). The low sunlight really zings in the city or the country and I don't have to get up at stupid o'clock to catch the light.
Plus I can wear a big coat with pockets for extra gear and a hat which makes me feel less conspicuous for street/editorial work. (Tried a false beard but that made me look weird).
Be interested to know if you have a preference.

I don't even know what half of these are - or where I can find them. I'll ask baby, she probably has shoes in every one of these colours.
Thanks for sharing the info though.

These chancers also have advertisers/sponsors on their sites. I noticed hero turdo (sic) has Warehouse Express on there, probably the biggest photography wholesaler in the UK. I'm sure if they knew they were being linked to these ragamuffins they would pull the plug.
I agree with earlier posts - it's up to legitimate stock sites to give them a good going over with legal sanction. There must be blood on the canvas. It's your money too.
