Thanks pixelbrat, this is exactly why I posted this.  Focusing is key.

Cameras / Lenses / Opinions on lenses
« on: May 31, 2006, 10:12 »
I would really like to hear your opinions on lenses

I am currently looking at two Sigma lenses.  What do you guys think of these two:

Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG MACRO
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3304&navigator=3

or
Sigma 55-200mm F4-5.6 DC
http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/lenses_all_details.asp?id=3288&navigator=6

The lens I currently have is the one that came with the camera.  It is the EF-S 18-55mm one.  I'm not sure which one is better or if there is a better one to pick within the same price range of about $200.  Let me know what you think.  Also wondering whether to go with the macro or not.  So very torn.

Adobe Stock / Re: Different image sizes?
« on: May 30, 2006, 13:23 »
I have an idea for a stock photography site but I don't have the resources to do what I want to do.  It would be a much more photographer based site where it would be in the photographer's interest to work to make it better.  I don't want to divulge any more details just in case I do have an opportunity to make it work.

As for striking, I think that they should.  Or at least form some sort of united front with the biggest players and that would push these sites to respect the photographers a bit more.  That being said, I haven't been able to see the financials for iStock so I can't say either way about their money making schemes.

General Stock Discussion / Rejections
« on: May 30, 2006, 10:21 »
I just found this very interesting.  I had finally got a rejection from 123RF after submitting about 108 photos.  Its about time they actually take a look.  But the funny thing is, they rejected one photo of an invoice and accepted another, both the same, just with different background.  Same with DT, although they claimed one was blurry and out of focus, yet the same photo that I put a black background was accepted.  Weird.  I don't mind though, I'm up to 40 photos on DT which isn't too bad.

Alamy is not exclusive as you can put the same files on micro and Alamy at the same time.  And if you have a shot of something that is only RF but its on something that is being sold, then you have a case - no matter who is selling it - and especially if you tell the sites that its only RF or whatever.    And, if the product they are selling is making money, it is worth suing because even if you drive that company bankrupt (if you win), you liquidate and take the money plus the punitive damages usually awarded or you get a piece of the pie...or whatever...its more complicated than this, but I don't really feel like whipping out the business law textbook and doing research  :P

It will probably be very difficult to keep track of people who are using your photos, but why take the chance putting it on the internet or in print or on a product?  Its a very dangerous situation because copyright infringement these days is being enforced pretty vigorously.  Alamy seems to be able to keep up and they are rights managed, so I don't see how this will not work.  As well, I think that they will be quite successful in the long term because they are a cheaper alternative to Alamy, and it probably gets the job done just the same.

I didn't really notice that there, but then again, the sites you mentioned to nothign at all anyways so I don't pay much attention to them.  So we'll see how it goes with this

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime's latest change
« on: May 29, 2006, 13:51 »
I don't know if anyone has noticed but Dreamstime has just kind of gotten involved in a 'macro' environment as well as royalty free.  This could spell out big payouts for those with pictures in demand.  There's 4 new options available - 2 of which are macro-esque in that pictures can be used on items being sold and such over the web and as products.

I'm not too HUGE on all the happenings of the micro world, but I haven't seen this happen elsewhere, which kind of indicates that there might be a movement up and coming soon towards hybrid sites of some sort.  I have no idea if I'm making sense, I've been at work too long and the heat in Toronto is ridiculous - its 35 degrees outside...like whoa.

All I do know now is that earning potential is through the roof.  This is my opinion obviously, but the amount of money that can be earned is fairly greater now if the concept takes off.  I know that you can earn 65% on Alamy, but for the average microstocker who's just trying to build up for that kind of stuff, this could be a good boost.  As well, Alamy isn't that accessible yet (until the FTP comes in).

So, I do like this option and I like the possibilities.  Hopefully it works out because its a win-win for everyone.

Off Topic / Re: Scanning 35 mm prints
« on: May 29, 2006, 08:55 »
I can't tell you either way.  I know that my versions of scanned prints were only accepted at Bigstock and Fotolia (1 or 2 at Fotolia and I gave up.  I'm not sure, maybe its my scanner (it can't scan negatives - its a bit old) or otherwise, but now that I have the Rebel XT, I'm just taking pics with that and experimenting that way - digital quality is obviously much better.  I have hundreds of prints but I also have the negatives, so hopefully I can make enough through micros to buy a hi-def neg scanner - I think thats the better way to go from what I've read

Not eyeing anything special really, just a Sigma 55-200 perhaps.  We'll see how that goes.

Would these pictures be close to 'sure bets' for StockXpert to accept?

I promise I'll drop the subject very soon :)

Hi again, I have a few more pictures for commenting, just to see what people think

I had these accepted by Dreamstime today so I'm a bit confident in their ability to be accepted by StockXpert

No no, you guys are correct. The parrot is not really in focus which is a shame because the picture came out a lot better than I had expected.

I can now reapply.  This makes me happy :)  Hopefully I can get approved.

Thanks for the help on these ones.  I may have a few more, if thats okay with you guys.  I also want you guys to see my work as well just so that you can associate something with my name.

Thanks Leaf for the breakdown, I appreciate it.

For the inital submission, from your comments, I would pick the 2 baseball ones and the calculator one as well, and hopefully they would be approved by StockXpert.  I am waiting for Dreamstime to take a look at another 13 photos and hopefully I can use those as a base to pick a few more.

From the list then, I guess I should avoid the tennis racket, and the parrot (although I want to use this one)

Not to worry about your advice, all that you said is absorbed.  The baseball photo on the grass has sold on Dreamstime and on 123RF (more than once on 123RF).  The tennis racket has sold on 123 but thats about it.  You may be correct about the bird though, although that also sells well on 123RF and has sold once on Dreamstime.  I value your opinion and I will take it into consideration when I edit/shoot my photographs because I'm not very advanced and I'd like to become more advanced.

As for the noise, it may be because I had to reduce the JPEG quality.  The original doesn't have that much noise and it was accepted into Dreamstime, who are so-so when it comes to being picky about noise

One last thing that I've noticed...no one yet has given me an indication from their experiences whether they think these pictures will be accepted at StockXpert

Awesome, thanks.

I didn't want to use the baseball one against the wall - the parrot closeup is not very good because I don't think I cropped the other properly.  The full parrot is quite popular (for views and 1 or 2 downloads so far on other sites)

As promised, here's some pictures.  I have a few more in mind, but I don't want to bog you guys down with too much too quickly.  As well, do you need to pass every picture to get accepted?  And do you think these pictures will get me into StockXpert? :) All these pictures have been accepted into Dreamstime, my harshest critic.

I would just like to post some pictures either in this forum or on a website and ask whether or not, from your experiences, you believe they will pass the test.  I don't want to get rejected again for an entire month.  I got shafted by Shutterstock when I shouldn't have and I don't have a constant earner which I need...so any help would be greatly appreciated in passing the initial submission
