The OP is asking about video compression, not regular images.

For video, yes, I always compress at 95% or thereabouts.

Do it in that order and you'll be happy.  Don't worry about all this "business" stuff until you are running a little.

IMO, editorial images are more timely and specific, and overall should probably sell less than commercial work, so you should sell it where you get more return for fewer sales.

Personally, with your history, I think you're jumping the gun with this whole "business" thing.  Just shoot, submit, and see what happens.

I don't think he's starting a "site".  He's using "business" as "I'm a guy with a camera who's going to submit content", I think.

What do you envision as a "microstock business"?  What is your experience with photography, existing equipment, etc?

If you were on dpreview, this question would probably get an "I'd like to be a surgeon, what scalpel should I buy?" answer.

I have number of questions that I will start new threads for;

You'd probably be better off keeping them all in one thread, instead of spreading them all about.

I think I've seen Braveheart enough times :)

"Before we let you leave, your commander must cross that field, present himself before this army, put his head between his legs, and kiss his own arse."

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you back up your images?
« on: December 27, 2008, 22:01 »
I print out every image, which I shoot again, with my 1ds MK3, and then I save that onto a cassette, which I bury in my backyard in a steel box.

:)

Every couple weeks, I copy my main hard drive to a second hard drive.  When full, put it at a relative's house.

« on: December 27, 2008, 16:59 »
Do they only send out 1099's if you had an income over $600 with them in 2008, or is the dollar amount of income irrelevant with them?

Yes, the law states that they only need to send 1099s if the income is over $600.

Again afaik, this does not apply to istock.  I have never received anything from them (or Getty about istock) regarding taxes.

iStock does not send out 1099 forms.

Earlier in the year, I received a form from Getty that requested for tax information (and I only submit to IS).  I assumed that it would be used for tax purposes.  If the form wasn't for tax purposes, then what was it for?

Did you sign up for Getty thru istock?  Otherwise they don't send out forms fir anything afaik.

I'm not sure how I can do this without giving away the cake.  All I will say for now is I was retaliated against for some information I gave in a previous post.  I'm sorry I can't be more specific right now.

Ok, I just don't know what "retaliated" could mean.  You got a nasty sitemail?  You had images removed?  Search position was changed?

Only from people "in power" at some micro sites who read these forums.  I have no issues with any MSG users at all.  I'm typically not this paranoid but I have learned my lesson the hard way.

I'm curious as well.   Others have said they are afraid of this kind of thing, but aside from the "Bobby" incident which seemed much deeper than forum posting, I'm curious as to what those "in power" could do to you negatively on any site.  Could you elaborate in general terms?

2008 was my first full year in micro and I'm happy with what I achieved. Small expectations is the key LOL.

Same here, and I think things went well.

My biggest gripe with the forum is too many smart arses getting their knickers in a twist about spelling

Asses.

« on: December 23, 2008, 15:15 »
My priority is to upload to iStock, currently.  I just prefer the quicker feedback of download updates, over the several months it takes on Getty.  I do try to do at least one thing a month for Getty though, to get an idea of how things work there.

The forums were what first attracted me to the site. Over time they've changed though. I won't post in the critique forum anymore. The last time I asked for advice there I was basically told "Duh!" and that was it. I never did get a critique or advise about the image.

The completely different, and new technique threads seemed to get a lot of response...

Sorry - not personal data - overall agency data, like iStock sold 70 million licenses last year, etc...

Can someone post the grosses for the top 6 agencies for the last couple of years so we can compare?

There is plenty of useful commentary in the critique forum for those who ask.  Same for any of the technical forums, like photography, etc.

Believe it or not, some people are actually excited about new developments, and are not just * up to a company.  And some aren't, and you can find those too.
