an image sold 6 times across 2 agencies in 3 months and thats your best seller? It seems that reading comprehension is not your greatest asset. Like I mentioned before - it is not my best seller (it is one of my best sellers) - out of a very small portfolio. And simple mathematics will tell you that 6 + 1 = 7 (in other words 7 sales at the time of my last post.) And I was right with my predictions from my previous post in that this image will continue to sell over time. I woke up this morning to find that my beach image has sold an eighth time. if the image has not taken off by now, and doesnt sell daily, dont leave your day job just yet
There are some people who have been in this game for a very long time and have accumulated very large portfolios. For those who make daily sales (or close to daily sales) with different images rather than the same image they should just quit? honestly, dont waste more time on this business.
I will continue to submit my still images and videos to stock agencies, whether you like it or not. I made my first payout recently on Shutterstock and also my first video sale with a port of 35 videos (I note that some individuals have ports with hundreds of videos on SS and 0 video sales.) Anyhow, Ive got some more photos to upload today so I wont waste more time on pointless discussions.

Yes, people buy tons of beach images, but there are also over 1 million(!!!) results when searching for "tropical beach" and 3.1 million(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) for just "beach" at Shutterstock.
The top results probably sell 60,000 times rather than 6.
Well it has sold 7 times in total. And it's likely a temporary number as well. No doubt it will keep continuing to sell and accumulate earnings over time. I would imagine that the top selling beach images have been available for a very long time - possibly years. My beach image has only been online for less than a few months so it will be interesting to see how well it does over say a two or three year period. Pretty * impressive how many times other peoples' beach photos have sold in this thread.

Sales were good during January and February (including one video sale on SS.) So far, March has been pretty poor overall.

Ten travel photos sold is not a bad effort when starting out. I only have a small portfolio myself which features a variety of different subject matter and the number of travel photos Ive sold is probably close to yours. I have sold other subjects as well. The average beach or the average tree won't sell when faced against the competition.
There is one particular beach image of mine that's turned out to be one of my best sellers. It sold six times through SS and once through Dreamstime. I haven't been into stock photography for all that long but I predict that this image will probably continue to make money as time goes on. There's also another beach photo that Ive sold at least twice through different sites. But yea I know what you're saying - I'm sure there would be thousands of high quality beach images out there to compete against.

Unknown to most people, including me until fairly recently, a lot of the streets in London are privately owned. Woah, I didn't realise that. Well must be pretty challenging to do any kind of stock photography in London then - whether it's commercial or editorial. You could always contact them for a definitive statement if you think there might be an issue. That said, most requests I've made (to tjer entities) have not been replied to.
Yea I'll send the Capricorn Caves management an e-mail. Since they accommodate wedding photographers, there's a fair chance that they might allow me to use my images of the caves as editorial. Or maybe even commercial (but I don't want to push my luck.)

Where is this cave? Surely it would depend on local regulations?
The Capricorn Caves in Queensland, Australia. Another thing to remember is: "Yes you can take pictures." is not the same as "Yes you can sell pictures as stock." Exactly. It depends on whether you're selling the images as commercial or editorial and whether the photos were taken on private property or not. You can take all the pictures you want of the Houses of Parliament. Just don't try to sell them as stock without buying a release.
Yea, if you were intending to sell them as commercial. Though would there be any issues if you were selling those photos of the Houses of Parliament as editorial (assuming you weren't standing on private property at the time)? As mentioned in my opening post, my photos that I intend to submit were taken outside of the caves. And they would be submitted as editorial / non-commercial. However, despite taking the photos outside, I'm not really sure if I was standing on private property or not. It was native bushland where I was taking the photos but I don't know if that particular area is part of the same property as the caves.

Very interesting articles. Though the first one states that photography is banned in many caves, not all caves. There was no issue with me taking photos inside these particular caves and I did not use flash. Regardless, I am only submitting photographs that were taken outside the caves (not inside.)

I think I'll just play it safe and submit them as editorial.

what bothers me really is that you cannot edid the keywords like in fotolia for some reason.
That's strange. I can edit keywords quite easily in Dreamstime. Just go to 'Edit' to the right of the image in "Your online files" and then do as much editing as you like.

Out of curiosity, what was the main subject in the photo? Don't suppose it was marijuana by any chance? Or some kind of plant perhaps?

It is certainly not forbidden to photograph in the caves. I exposed a number of images inside. Though like I mentioned in my previous post, the particular photos that I plan on submitting were taken outside of the cave.

As is well known amongst stock photographers, images of venues which require an admission fee for entry must be editorial as opposed to commercial. Such venues may include theaters, zoos, sports stadiums etc. I have several exterior photographs of the entrance of a cave which I'm planning on submitting as stock. This particular cave requires an entrance fee from visitors who want to go exploring inside (accompanied by a tour guide.) I'm assuming that despite the fact that this cave is a completely natural, geological formation, submitted photographs of this subject would need to be editorial?

No sales so far this year. Then again, I only have a very small portfolio on DT - under 200 images. Most of my 15 sales were made last year.

It's not the only image that's problematic. Ive had a few others in the past which Fotolia refused to upload. And right now, there's another image that will not upload (this is currently my third attempt at uploading it.)
Edit: Third attempt failed.

Some people have sent GoPros into space with weather balloons and taken photos / footage of the earth that way.

Since last night, Ive been trying to upload a Model Release form but I'm having no success. When I click "Upload", I'm left waiting for ages and ages but it never truly uploads. I keep cancelling and starting the upload process again but I'm still not getting anywhere. There have been two occasions where Ive left the room for a few hours and come back but it still hasn't uploaded. It's not a large file (only 749 KB) so I don't know why it's taking so long to upload. This morning, I tried a different browser but that made no difference. Has anyone else experienced this issue with SS?

Well I tried uploading another image there yesterday and to my surprise, it worked. I didn't do anything differently.

Some are saying that sales information is available on the original iStockphoto site but I cannot see any such details there.

This is bloody disgraceful! the missing images, over 50[/u], were in my portfolio for 3 years and making some sales, now gone worst it will take me an age to identify photos from my archive that match their number and then go through the whole process of upload and approval again
Woah! That is totally unacceptable. Getty / iStockphoto have really sunk to a new low in terms of incompetence. And this is how they treat exclusives? I keep asking myself why I keep submitting to them....I honestly don't know why I do.

How can buyers find me with 1 million new images a week, spammed uploads, bad keyword, same bad shots over and 20-30 of each one. Add that new people will just copy what they think is most popular, best selling, making more of that a wasteland.
It does seem overwhelming when you look at those kinds of figures. Sometimes I think: "What chance have I got?" when my images are amongst a sea of millions. Then again, I'm sure that your images are still selling, right? Just as my images are selling also. So they are being found by buyers (despite the odds.) And that makes me positive. I admit that I only have a very small portfolio on SS (under 200 images) but the sales I am getting inspire me to upload more and hopefully one day, I'll have a decently large portfolio.

I'm a contributor to SS, not a buyer. Though once in a while, I'll so a search on the site with a random keyword just to see what comes up. Generally, I find good quality images adhering to a high standard or maybe I'm just lucky. I was surprised to see those three poor images posted above - assuming they're from SS's collection? In my view, those particular photos should never be accepted as stock (or any other commercial image use.) I do agree that SS accepting 1 out of 10 photos for newcomers is a bad move and will lead to an accumulation of junk images.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I should bother submitting to iStockphoto / Getty anymore. Just so many negatives with this crew - lower pay rates for contributors, hidden payment information, no visible way to select 'editorial' during the submission process for images that should belong to that category - the list goes on. And now I can't even upload a photo. It's almost like they're trying to discourage contributors from submitting.

I'm currently in the process of submitting a photo to ESP. I have completed all the details and I'm ready to click "Submit" but the Submit icon is greyed out / non-clickable. It seems to be indicating that there is a required field to be completed but I have already completed all of the fields (the ones with red asterixes.) Ive even selected the 'no person' icon. I notice that they now require the date for commercial images which I think is strange but I filled that in regardless. I can save the information I typed in no problem but it won't let me submit. Any ideas what's going on?
