iStockPhoto.com / Re: RC's not increasing in line with sales
« on: August 11, 2014, 14:37 »
Everyone is affected, AFAIK.

As per usual, Lobo says they know about the problem, and will fix it "soon". That was back in June, I believe, when they stopped updated.

Perhaps this is Getty's way of saying they are dropping the RC system? Everyone will get 15% / 30% from next year, on. Or maybe 10% / 20%, ha.  >:(

I have to wonder if you are correct about "dropping the RC system". They have grandfathered in levels for two years, and they are not even counting the new subs into RCs at all which doesn't make any sense. Who knows.

Just hang in there. There are many things that take a long time on iStock for no apparent reason.

Congratulations on a successful start to independence. Looking at the earnings chart  on the right I am shocked to see that exclusive income seems to be in drastic free fall. Wasnt that number somewhere around 340 before?

As an iS exclusive I am not shocked if the chart on the right has dropped significantly. The trend seems to be a strong downward one. It is getting to the point where it feels like it is almost just a matter of time before the decision to go non-Ex will not be a difficult choice to make.

Interestingly, my subs sales were about the same insignificant amount in both April and May.

....... I still see people getting excited about having Vetta acceptances.
Of course! a large/XL vetta sale is equivalent to 6-7 regular sales if you're at 35/40% or even 100 main subscriptions sales ..... add to the fact that Vetta is mirrored to Getty, it can easily save your monthly earnings!! So yes, I'm excited when I've got a new Vetta, yet it doesn't mean I'm having a good month. Actually June is heading to a serious disaster....... :o :o
I wonder if image exclusivity is in the talking because as it stands it's seriously unsustainable!!

I guess I was looking at the bigger picture. Getting a Vetta acceptance doesn't mean much if the overall sales trend is significantly down. Not to mention getting a Vetta acceptance doesn't imply that there will be any significant sales of the new Vetta.

So far, June iS sales are pretty terrible, yet I suspect this is not true for all contributors as I still see people getting excited about having Vetta acceptances.

For me, things work except the Forums page is empty.

No improvement in sales. In fact if anything it seems the decline continues.

Sales are quite poor. Reality is, you will know when it is time to leave exclusivity. If and when that time comes, it will be painfully obvious on an individual basis.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: RC 'targets' reduced?
« on: May 26, 2014, 09:28 »
With introduction of subs on iStock the majority of buyers soon will switch to subs making the whole idea of RC system irrelevant.
Getty will bring the old canister levels back as the next try to keep exclusives on board.

I question the future of the RC system, but I find it hard to believe that the canister system will be revived since it would most likely cause an overall increase in royalty payout.

« on: May 14, 2014, 07:51 »
Seems like the royalties are not showing as 100% on today's sales, are other's seeing this?

837
iS has grandfathered the royalty levels for the last two years. So the RC system is kind of defacto nonexistent. I would be very surprised if there isn't a significant change by iS regarding the RC system as it stands today.

I completely get that and totally respect it. In fact if I had started earlier I would probably be in your shoes. I just don't agree with using the poll as an indicator. Using your own metrics based on your own experience and stats seems like a smarter and ultimately more trustworthy gauge.

Yea, I would agree with "using your own metrics". There are just too many unkowns in a poll.

Personally, if and when I see my income drop by 50% over the long term (at least 6 month average) with me putting in the same amount of effort, I will drop exclusivity and upload to the usual suspects.

Oops, thanks. I would think that a more general announcement would bring them more positive PR and attract people to exclusivity. It's not like this is going to be kept a secret.

Odd that there doens't seem to be a peep about this in the iS forums.

Since iS shut down exclusive artist "promotion" of images from S to S+, for the most part GI sales will drive to zero in the future unless the artist consistently produces a significant number of Vetta images.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Exclusives - how are your sales lately?
« on: April 24, 2014, 09:41 »
My sales were quite poor last couple of weeks. Oddly though, yesterday was quite a strong day. I think any real assessment of the new subs plan impact will take a long time (6 months plus). All this being said, I don't feel good about long term prospects.

845
So this is about a 9 to 1  ratio (308/35) for iStock exclusive/non-exclusive. Would any folks who recently went from exclusive to non-ex care to comment on whether they saw a roughly 9 to 1 drop in their iStock earnings?

No. Definitely not 9:1. If I would make 9 times more as an exclusive than I do now as a non-exclusive, I would go back to exclusivity right away (well, I couldn't really due to other contractual obligations... but it's a hypothetical question anyways)

For me, the immediate drop was 4:1 which was later even less as more PP income was added to my iStock royalties.
I think you did better than most, I've seen most people say they went down 80-90%.  I also wouldn't expect the jump from going exclusive to be as much as the drop from leaving because getting files into S+ and Vetta is more difficult than losing them.  I know you left before GI sales were big, at least for me they didn't become a major factor until the second quarter of 2013.

On the other hand, getting new files into GI at this point is near impossible for most people, so the GI benefit will fade and disappear over time. The truth is, there are so many changes as time goes on, that it is hard to draw any firm conclusions...the proverbial "moving target"

How exactly are these "earnings ratings" calculated?
People enter their earnings each month.  If you enter $0-$2500+ you get averaged.  The numbers in the "earnings rating" range from 0-500, 500 equals an average of $2500 so each point is equal to $5.  There are structural problems with the poll so it shouldn't be taken as 100% accurate.

So this is about a 9 to 1  ratio (308/35) for iStock exclusive/non-exclusive. Would any folks who recently went from exclusive to non-ex care to comment on whether they saw a roughly 9 to 1 drop in their iStock earnings?
There are people who did.  The drop in royalty rate, the lower sale price per image, no more GI sales etc.. are some of the ways that happens.  Just looking at those factors it's easy to see a big drop 50% royalty rate and S+ to M is a drop from 60 credits for XXXL to 7.  An XXXL S+ sale would go from about 30 dollars to 2 dollars.

No doubt, there would be a precipitous drop, but it would be nice to hear it from folks that actually went through the experience.

Lisa and Dirk,

But in the cases of Dreamstime and Shutterstock. Can you place links to these lightboxes as part of an image caption?

850
Is iS the only agency where you can create a linked lightbox for customer's to look at?
