Isn't this illegal 'Price Fixing' ?

No, it's price fixing in the sense that they've changed the price. Companies do that all the time without it being illegal.

Might reduce your withholding tax. Have you already filled in your W8 in the tax settings?

When I heard about BB and what it offers I was 100% against it. Why? Simple. Pay the staff you hired and if things go well, you'll hire them again. Splitting income is a bad longterm idea. You invest a lot of own resources, time, equipment, post-processing and time to get profitable results. If you cut all incomes with all the actors and other stuff, you'll never return your own investment. Never.

Well splitting revenue is entirely optional... so it's a strange reason to be 100% against them.

Yeah, I usually figure out how much I'm going to get paid per sale before I start uploading clips... not after I've uploaded clips and made a sale.

But still... what country are you from?

830

1. We make more per sale than under their first plan, and that change is wholly due to contributor feedback.
... sure... just not that first point.
Like I said it's about 7$ drop per sale.

The point is that it's $10 more than it was going to be. Nobody is celebrating that were getting less than we were... we're just slightly happier that were getting more than we were about to start getting.

Happens often.  Here's an example from my portfolio.

I created this in May of 2016:
https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/61523334/super-popular-social-video-counter-counts-1-billion-views.html?ref=odesigns

After it started selling, I saw copycats like this:
https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/73031793/beautiful-3d-animation-close-video-counter-quickly-increasin.html?ref=odesigns

So blatant.  When I complained, the agency said unless they take my actual file and re-upload it, not much can be done about it.

The only consolation I have is the fact that my file, for the time being, has a higher placement in search results.

Have you seen all the derivative items he's made from the same concept? You're missing a trick there.

If you're aiming to sell stock then I wouldn't recommend any action camera... unless the majority of your content will be underwater or mounted to something. I.e. specifically action camera type shots.

Nothing wrong with buying an action cam in addition to your main stock camera though.

In that case, go for the best Go Pro you can afford, or some other proven brand with comparable specs. I've never been that keen on the 4K picture quality from small sensor cameras (including my Go Pro 5 Black), when viewed at 100% everything looks a bit 'muddy' for want of a better word. But if you shoot in 4K and downscale to HD everything should look nice and crisp. Shoot in Linear when possible, using flat colour, and in the day... they're not the best in low light.

Typical it would be in Russian!!  thats where all the majority of earnings are going, Russia, Ukraine, etc, etc,  for 3 bucks a day they will sit there 24 hours and just upload and upload. For us its just barely a cup of coffee :)

Yeah, because you can pay your rent, bills, food, clothes, internet connection, Creative Cloud, equipment costs, general living costs and buy a decent enough computer in Russia for around $100 a month.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Inflation
« on: August 03, 2018, 05:02 »
I don't have to bring anything up with my government. In my country it's the law, made by the government, that the employers have to increase salary by 2% every year. Otherwise people would get poorer and poorer every year because of inflation and rising costs of everything.

Well if you're employed then you're already benefiting from that 2% increase a year. Happy days! If you aren't employed, then you just need to get employed... and then you can benefit from that 2% increase a year. Happy days!

. . . these clips are for web or mobile application only. They can only be streamed; downloading and broadcast usage isn't permitted. This restriction has been designed to protect your earnings and give you an extra chance to make money.

Thanks,

This is not true. Anyone can right mouse click on the website and download the master file. The videos are not protected.

Yeah but what people can do, and what people are allowed to do, are two very different things.

Which is in turn completely negated by increases in food, accomodation, taxes, insurance, fuel,  healthcare, service fees, and so on.

Erm... yeah, that's what I said.

I guess its cancelled out somewhat by the price drops in cameras, computers, storage space and increased internet speeds.

rf and rm are falling down...soon many agency will close the door believe me.

What are you basing this on? If you could share the evidence that would be much appreciated. I mean, you're not just basing agency sales on your individual sales... surely?

842
Well there's 20m RF images on Pond5 and 13m of them are available for $10 or less. So 2.65 out of 3 would make it close enough!

843
Don't take my word for it... if we're discussing a site on Micro Stock Group, then chances are that it's a Micro Stock Site. Usually a good rule of thumb.

844
It seems like everybody read all of the original post apart from the bit where it said you'd get the email in 6 to 8 weeks.

845
He means it's a microstock site... not that it's a tiny site.

So you are suggesting that Pond 5 is a microstock site?

Yes I am.

VideoBlocks / Re: Commission cut
« on: July 27, 2018, 05:56 »
It sounds like you're agreeing with what I'm saying... but also not, if that's possible? But on this point...

Simple argument what I'm talking about: How many things did you buy from Aliexpress or any relative Chinese websites? Why? You know that your local shop is selling the same things at few times bigger price? You are actually killing his business when buying from the (almost-production-price) Chinese dealers. I've seen many tech shops died because of lower priced internet shops.

Absolutely! And you're killing the Chinese dealers business if everyone buys from the local shop. Let the best shop win I say!

For them I'm assuming that a short term spike in sales for which the contributor pays is seen as a bigger benefit than a long term sustainable business.

Would you class an agency that takes 0% from sales... a long term sustainable business?

There are 3 types of people in this world.

1. Those who make things happen
2. Those who let things happen
3. Those who say what the heck just happened!

I am in group #1 so I just ignore the other two groups!

Well, unless our commission rate increases to over 50% then you're the type of person that wants to make things happen and/or thinks they make things happen and/or thinks they have the ability to make things happen. If the commission rate does increase then I shall agree that you are the kind of person that does actually make things happen... and I shall admit I was wrong and thank you for your efforts.

Well, the pricing war which I warned a year ago has begin... thx to VB/SB other agencies have sales problems. Now dump your prices to match VB's if you all so much enjoy this pricing tier. #muahahahahaha

Well you seem to enjoy that pricing tier to an extent, as 394 of your HD clips are available for $49 on Dissolve. An agency that pays 30%, so you get $14.70 for an HD sale.

So just to clarify and confirm your logic here:

Old Storyblocks   -   100% of $49:   Horrible.
New Storyblocks  -   50% of $49:     Absolutely disgusting.
Dissolve              -   30% of $49:     Fine.

Yes, only about 10% of your content is at $49 on Dissolve, before you use that as some excuse, but that's not the point. Less than 10% of my revenue comes from Storyblocks.
