You may want to talk to an attorney first like Ed Greenberg or Carolyn Wright. If you take the wrong steps you could compromise your ability to take legal action.

Canon / Re: Canon... 5D mk iii vs. 5d mk ii vs. 6D« on: August 03, 2013, 14:39 »Switching can be VERY expensive. I tried going from Nikon to Canon after nearly 40 years of dedicated Nikonism. Desire to shoot Video convinced me to go with Canon T2i. I love the camera but never followed through on the Video. Now, I'm stuck wanting (and buying) lenses for Nikon AND Canon. I you're going for frame rate and focus a 5DIII would be great. So would a 7D at 8FPS. Or the new 70D at 7FPS looks pretty interesting with the new focus system. I'm not sure I'd get hung up on full frame vs crop. Crop sensors these days are have come a long way. 831

Desire to shoot Video convinced me to go with Canon T2i. I love the camera but never followed through on the Video. Now, I'm stuck wanting (and buying) lenses for Nikon AND Canon. Switching can be very expensive for people who really truly need a bunch of lens or are just equipment hoarders. I doubt the majority of micro shoots really need a studio full of pro equipment. I have a 5DMII and a bag full of lenses. I love my 70-200mm f/2.8 II but rarely use it. I'm a recovering equipment hoarder and am probably going to start scaling back at some point. I bought a D800 and the 28-300mm covers almost everything I shoot. I just picked up a 50mm f/1.8 for creative and low light shots. Are those pro lenses? No. Will micro buyers or any other buyers notice? Probably not. For travel I picked up an NEX-7 and 18-200mm. I use that more than the other two combined. So I haven't switched. I have multiple brands and if you don't go crazy buying stuff you don't need it probably really isn't that expensive. The people that buy $5,000 lenses to shoot subjects that sell low volume/cost in micro may want to re-evaluate their business. Need vs want. 832
Canon / Re: Canon... 5D mk iii vs. 5d mk ii vs. 6D« on: August 03, 2013, 09:56 »How many of those lenses do you really use? Unless you shoot other types of work, for micro an 18-200/28-300 would probably cover just about everything. Depends on what you shoot. Happy smiley people with strobes could be any lens. Inside sports at night would need fast glass. 833

How many of those lenses do you really use? Unless you shoot other types of work, for micro an 18-200/28-300 would probably cover just about everything. 834
Canon / Re: Canon... 5D mk iii vs. 5d mk ii vs. 6D« on: August 03, 2013, 06:17 »
If you're going for price you could probably pick up a used 5DMII for under $1500US. Great camera. I have one. But the 6D is around $2,000 and has a lot more newer features. IMO the 5DMIII is nice but seems overpriced for what you're getting.
I'd probably lean toward a 6D. One thing with the 6D though is at 20MP it may be just shy of the largest XXXL size on some sites. 835
Off Topic / Re: Canon 47MP« on: July 31, 2013, 06:41 »<snip>yeah, no idea who needs 48MP on micros or even macros if that matters but it's a non issue I'm working a lot more on selling prints and more MP = bigger print = more money. As far as Canon vs Nikon goes it's a game of leapfrog. Every couple years each launches the big new thing. So I invested in both Canon and Nikon lenses. If a new body comes out from Canon or Nikon I can decide if I want it. Still have my 5DMII and now have a D800. Both great cameras. 836
General Stock Discussion / Re: Yuri Arcurs First Public Statement« on: July 25, 2013, 18:07 »
Yuri, my questions:
So if micro is declining what segment of people do you see as having the greatest opportunity for being successful at mobile and in general with stock? - General public mobile phone users? - Microstockers who embrace mobile? - Traditional macro people who embrace mobile? - Other? And given all of this seems to be tied to Getty is there any advantage to being an existing Getty contributor? 837

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock sales since price changes« on: July 19, 2013, 20:34 »latest from me: DLs up 30% $$ down 32% since the new pricing in JuneI've had the exact opposite experience. DL's are down 50%, but $ is up 100% so in the end I'm making the same money with 1/2 the DL's. Also, only old files continue to sell. Nothing I've uploaded this year or last year sells much at all. My downloads are down 50% starting last month. About the same as early 2008 levels which is when I was just getting started. Money is about the same as the rest of this year so no drop there. Problem is downloads keep dropping and have been for years. If something doesn't change at some point money will start dropping too. Or downloads will keep heading toward zero. 840
New Sites - General / Re: Scoopshot secures $1.2 million in funding from Yuri« on: July 19, 2013, 08:48 »
Now that I've looked into this more I think it's something to keep an eye on. It seems rough but has potential to be disruptive.
Right now there's no quality control. But stock sites seem to be backing down on the whole quality requirement. If they figure out how to give even a slight preference to sellable images this could improve the buyer experience. Maybe favor people who are showing consistent sales and move those images toward the top. And cellphones are becoming the new standard camera. Most people have cellphones which makes almost anyone a photographer. The image quality of the new 41MP Nokia is so-so but how long will it be before big megapixel cellphones with good quality will become common? A couple years? Another thought is this actually may help reduce the supply of free and stolen images. If the general public catches on that they can make money they may be less likely to give stuff away on Flickr or wherever. And maybe copyright law will become more common knowledge so people could become more sensitive to it. Interesting times. 841
New Sites - General / Re: Scoopshot secures $1.2 million in funding from Yuri« on: July 18, 2013, 17:46 »I can see a concept like this being very useful for people who need pictures of a certain thing, like the telephone directory. There is an army of photographers that are spread out literally everywhere around the world so if it became as popular as instagram, someone is probably only a few hundred meters away from the location you need. So, if a message could pop-up ... you are within 100m of a needed photo shoot.. it might be worth your trouble to snap the pic. Making an effort and going out of my way to create an image that will probably only be purchased one time for $2.50 is certainly not worth my while. I'd agree. Plus there are a lot of good mobile phone shooters out there. This will probably take some revenue away from stock sales but I can't see it being significant. Who would use this to buy? Professional media buyers already complain about sifting through garbage. Bloggers? Teachers? And I have a hard time seeing long term sustainability. No recurring revenue? You get $2.50 once, IF, the buyer buys. And the buyer may not buy anything. I wonder how many people will submit a few dozen pics, not get a penny, and give up. 842

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Some questions regarding payments from photoshelter« on: July 13, 2013, 07:11 »WOW, thats ridiculous. So you pay interest over the commissions they take. This business keeps amazing me. No, I haven't seen this. It's actually the other way around. You get the full sale amount at the time of the sale and then once a month PS sends an invoice for you to pay their cut of the commission. So you have the full amount for the whole month and could be earning interest on it. 847
Selling Stock Direct / Re: Some questions regarding payments from photoshelter« on: July 13, 2013, 07:08 »The other stock sites and POD sites generally take their commission 1st and then pay remaining amount... I'm guessing it's this. PS pays the full amount of the sale to you and then they send a monthly invoice to charge you for their commission cut. Most agencies do it the other way around where they get the full sale amount and give you your commission. 848

I'm with Photoshelter and yes it's normal. Like most other automated billing systems they automatically take monthly payments and commission fees from my credit card. Sales payments come immediately through Paypal.

Totally hear you Dan. Motivation comes from positive things like seeing sales growth and being rewarded. When all the positive go away money is the only motivation. When the money goes away, well, what's the reason to keep going?
Maybe you should look into other methods of selling your work and you might get that spark of drive back. |
