Which way is the wind blowing... Meaning, some batches I'll run 100% acceptance and the the next day, I'll have 60% or more rejected.. And that's not just on DT, that's on others too. Pix will be accepted by one site and rejected by another. A pic will sell like crazy on one, and have low views on another. Pix rejected by one for even technical reasons, will be accepted on another and sell well for me. You have to take the rejections with a grain of salt. It just isn't worth getting frazzled about. I learned that the hard way. If I receive a technical rejection, I will take the time to look at the picture and put myself in the reviewers shoes. And many times, I can understand why they rejected it. Other times, I have no clue what they're talking about, I feel they are dead wrong. If it is a tech problem I can adjust and resubmit, I do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, you can only wonder what bad drug the reviewer is on... Other times, they are right on about the problem. When it comes to the old "too many on site now" or "not commercial material" I've learned to wait a short time and then resubmit the same picture. Guess what... it's accepted, suddenly, there aren't too many on the site and/or, it is commercial material. soooooooo It's a crazy business... :)I end with my opening question.... "Which way is the wind blowing?" --tom

FYI: You can't see your views at SS.
Yeah, I don't like that.. I like to see what's being looked at to give me a clue of what to load in the future and what to forget about. It amazes me still when I look at any of the sites and pull up a ranking by 'popularity' and look at what's being viewed. Some pictures that I think were trash, are at the top of the list, or first page. Pix I think would be "popular" are on the next to and last page... LOL Hatman12 -- Hey, congrats on your first!!! FT is a very popular and productive site for many here at MSG. You really haven't been on it all that long to make a fair comparisson. Everyone else seems to do well there. However, in my case after 5 months, I found that my total views were next to nothing. And very few sales (16 total on 5 pictures..... - I do more than 16 sales daily at SS - same portfolio). It was suggested that I had a poor keyword foundation on the pictures. Yet, when I'd search with the exact 'name' of the picture, the pix didn't come up on the search, let alone through exact keywords. I use pactically the exact same keywords on every site. I don't claim to know the workings of the sites, but I do know, my pictures rarely came up in a search when I surfed myself or even had others look for me. I don't know why I did so poorly at FT, as I said, everyone else here seems to do very well there. In spite of my bad experience at FT, I would still say to newbies, keep uploading there and give it a fair chance. One thing unique that I liked about FT, you know who purchased your work. Hang in there........ -tom

Vally -- I believe you are correct, that those "not approved" may be the ones that were merely rejected because you didn't hit the magic number of 7. Meaning they actually were okay. I got shot down by SS, gee I forget, 3 or 4 times.... I would recycle the ones that 'passed' on the first and second try. On the final try, the one when I was accepted, 8 passed.. it is interesting that one of the two shot rejected, was a recycled that had passed every try before... Don't know what to tell you about recycling previous submissions, but that's what happened to me. Very good advice above, absolutely stay away from a lot of blue sky, isolated on white, really any pic where the majority of it is solid color. SS is fanatical about noise. -tom

One of my favorite rejections is "focus is not where we think it should be" , I think that's an SS one. Like, who took the picture, oh yeah, me... and what was I focusing on, oh yeah, what I thought I was taking a picture of... I love that one. I like the mop/wall pic... nice shot, looks crisp.. but I think I agree with GeoPappas... paint out the flowers on the bottom, resubmit. Don't get me wrong, I like the pic as it is flowers and all... but it seems flowers tend to get rejected frequently anymore... much of the time you can understand where they're coming from with the rejections. Other times, they make no sense at all. Nice work, river!! -tom

Photosgraphis.... Don't let it get you down.... I was accepted on my first try at StockXpert... but since I've been on, they've rejected about 60% of my portfolio.. for "too dark" or " don't need this kind of photo"... So, there's no rhyme or reason... Hang in there, you'll get on. Rejection is part of the business.. Don't take it personal. -tom

wonders never cease... I just sold 'another' pic on USPS..... gee that makes a grand total of six since June 2006!!! Let me do some math... one pic every month... ah, times 10, add the 7, divided by........ gee payout would be... wow, I can't count that high... maybe I can put the payout in my will for my grandkids college fund........ Yeah, that's the ticket! -tom

Trying to learn to do isolated shots, I was one day shooting anything I had laying around. I did a series of shots of an old camera and I had this old 1950's portable transistor radio. SO, I shot it too. It is beat to a pulp, the leather cover worn and stained.... well... One day while uploading a batch to SS, I included it... figured, what the heck, maybe I can play the ' vintage' card on this one... ....if they take it, cool, if not, it's a lousy shot anyway. It's not even a mediocre isolated shot as I'm still learning lighting. I figure, all I have to lose is a couple minutes keywording the thing. Well much to my surprise, SS took the thing!! I even wondered how it got past the reviewer, maybe it was a mistake... It's been up about 2 weeks and has sold 6 times already. Who knows?? Maybe somebody bought it to put up on some forum somewhere so that everyone can get a good laugh ripping it up.... LOL

I don't expect StockXpert to accept photos because they are accepted at other agencies, but when they are accepted at other agencies, and selling well several places, it's at least an indications that the photos in question are good stock material.
.... Exactly what humors me, epixx. Especially at StockXpert. They've rejected a major percentage of my 'folio for "not stock material" and yet those exact pix are selling fantastic on SS (and others) but especially SS. Hey, it's their site, they take what they want. Like I always say, if they don't want to sell it, someone else will........... and they do. I do not go into a flame-out and crash-dive over rejections. That's the 1st thing I learned about this business, get used to it, and learn from it. And a heavy 90-some % of the time, I can see why a picture was rejected, I agree with the reviewer, no problem. BUT... StockXpert is one of my latter sites, that is, most recently signed up on. The pix that I upload there are the ones already 'proven' on the likes of SS, DT, FT none of whom are all that easy on review. Thus, when StockXpert rejects them as "too dark' but, more, "Not stock material"... I can only scratch my head and wonder if perhaps someone just got up on the wrong side of the bed and is having a bad day.

Bryan.. and all. My comments above were not to be meant as negative criticism directed towards Lucky Oliver. A check of my uploading record to LO will testify to my feelings toward LO and my hope for their future success. LO is the first place I upload every new pic I shoot, first place! LO holds my largest portfolio (BigStock close behind). When the comment option first came up on LO, I had mixed emotions. I had seen my wife go through a commenting fiasco on a site where she sold her photography. It went down in two directions. One group, making endless request via the site mail begging people to make comments on their work pro quid quo..... you give me 5 comments, I'll give you 5. More time was spent in emails than in shooting pix. The other group became vindictive, "You can get better pictures of such and such ...yada yada...elsewhere". Very negative and unflattering comments. Neither served any useful purpose, rather, they became damaging. My wife eventually pulled all her work and closed the account, as did others on the site. I understood what LO is looking for in comments but I wondered, would all carnies?. As I said in my comment above, I was apprehensive about it. However, I made a decision at that time to support the LO effort. I wanted and still want to see this Lucky Oliver machine succeed. And I admit here to all what I did say on the blog back on November 5th .... quote from the LO blog Considering the professional level in the photography of the other Carnies here...... .... I can only see their personal comments as a means to further improve my own work. I think it will be a positive addition to the site. That was based on the hope that comments would be positive and also that they would be monitored by the powers that be at LO. And, that if they got out of hand, or inappropriate, they'd be censored. I supported it while at the same time being a bit skeptical of the outcome. At this time, I am still leery about the public commenting and my final feelings are still held in reserve. However, I do actively comment on LO and I made the above quoted comment on the blog in support of your request and... in the hopes that those "professionals" would use the comment option in a proper manner. You personally have made comments on a couple of my pictures and they were flattering and helpful. But, that is you. You are a professional and you are well aware of 'model' business and people management practices. All of the comments made on my LO pictures are complimentary. But evidently some carnies are not as gentle or tactful. That's human nature. As well, many do not desire to have comments attached to their pictures, pro or con, but particularly con. When I have made comments on my fellow carnies pix, I try to be encouraging and upbuilding. I will continue to comment on others pictures in a positive manner. However, I remain in my opinion that I do not see how a negative comment can be of value in the selling of the picture. I can understand how it may increase the views.... but not it's sales. I have to bow to your superior knowledge of how the comments have affect on the internet and its workings. I know zip about the topic. You are the president and leader of this future mega-corp (hopefully). You have a very public record of success in the business world. You've proven yourself. I respect that. I, on the other hand, just teach business management to low and mid-managers [you know what they say about teachers] . I accept what you're telling us on LO, as can be evidenced by my participation in the Lucky Oliver program and agenda. I'd love to see my LO sales as 84% of my volume, and I'm hanging in there. I'm always open to learn something new. As it is, you'll just have to show me, in time, how those kinds of comments will help sales. Hey, if it turns out to be true... I can eat my words... I can admit I'm wrong... I personally have a very thick skin. If negative comments will sell my pictures, ..... go fer it! If it'll sell a pic a couple dozen times a day, bring it on, rip it up! However, most people, I believe, will not be so accepting. I did not intend to offend anyone in my comments, especially Bryan and the LO folks. Just because I am only in 99.9% agreement with the LO philosophy, doesn't mean I don't want to be on the rocketship with Bryan and the gang when it takes off! Peace - tom Bryan, I would like to personally mail you from the LO site about this.

I'm guessing you meant "January Earnings"...... My best month ever!! I'm thrilled with some sites and.... well, kind of disappointed with others as you can imagine by these numbers. My sales do not seem as balanced as the rest of yours. SS 84% DT 5% BigStock 5% StockXpert 4% FT 1.2% 123 .4% LO .4% FP 0% USPS 0% ..FP In all fairness, wasn't on FP all month and as I've read here, I don't expect any high and constant sales there. ..USPS, what else could be expected? ..123, I've a very limited portfolio there. DT & BS... slow but steady. FT I pulled out about mid-month, personal reasons. LO... well..... my 'folio on LO is almost the exact duplicate to-the-picture of that on SS who ran 84% of my sales. I sold more on SS this month than all the other 8 combined in the last 3 months. I keep hoping that something will soon break out at LO. and... StockXpert... well, their loss, they've rejected about 60% of what SS has taken and is selling like hotcakes.... funny too, as most of my rejects from StockXpert were "not commercial material". why do I find that humorous?

......my ego is most definitely bruised. Better just pick myself up and take more photos!
Scarlettholly, that's the attitude!! Don't let rejections get you down. One site will say they're all trash, and the next will take them all and sell the heck out of them.... go figure. They don't like these pix, just go out and make some more!! It's like eating nachos. When the bag's empty, you get another one! No problem, there's more pictures where the last batch came from. Hang in there! - tom

This is one reason why I was apprehensive when Bryan first suggested the commenting. I'm thankful that I haven't gotten any 'negative' comments on my pix at LO. And I will not comment on any others pictures unless I have something really nice to say about them. Of what logical purpose would a negative comment or corrective criticism/suggestion serve? I feel they would only hinder a purchase and detract from the picture and it's worth as it stands. A buyer could look at your shot and first impression be, 'Hey, Great Picture!" ...then read a comment about a blown highlight or a different focal or lighting suggestion, view it completely different and then think.... " Humm, I didn't notice that, yeah, maybe I'll look at another shot" .. That's what I feared about the original LO suggestion about comments. I wouldn't mind suggestions at all, I'd welcome them, IF... they weren't available to the buying public. Fortunately so far, from the comments I have read by many of the folks here, they seem to be complimentary and of a good nature. And that's what they should be. We're trying to help each other increase our sales, not the opposite. I read those comments berryspun. I wouldn't lose any sleep over them. They are your pictures, you like them, Lucky Oliver liked them, and that's good enough. You have a very good portfolio. What's the point? One man's trash is another's treasure. Pick any micro or macro site, pull up anyones portfolio, and a hundred different photogs could come up with two hundred suggestions to 'improve' the shot. While the owner feels it is perfect just as it is. We get it every day in this business. StockXpert will reject my picture as 'too dark' , or 'not commercial material' .... and SS will take it and sell it 3 or 4 dozen times in one month. That's the point. If you are happy with it, that's all that matters. I am not against criticism and/or advice from other photogs. I openly accept it and I desire it. That's one of the reasons why I joined this forum. And I've gotten a whole boat-load of good to great advice here. It makes me a better shooter. BUT.... it is not appropriate when posted right under a person's photo where potenial buyers are viewing it. Send it via email, or tell each other about it here. Don't hang a virtual sign in the other guys store-front window saying, "This photo is okay, but it could be better!" I don't think that was the intention of this forum. Just as GeoPappas said, " ....only leave (positive) comments on the images that you like. Otherwise it would defeat the whole purpose. " I've started leaving comments on many of your pictures and I hope to comment on all that want them. I can assure you, I will only be leaving comments that will spur on potential customers to buy your photo!! When I feel a little more confident about my work , I'll post my link too .... but some of you have already unknowingly commented on my work at LO and they have all been very complimentary. I appreciate it very much. The good news is that berryspun's commenter appears not to be one of the family here. And I know that the family here would never intentionally hurt one of it's own. It's a great idea as long as we continue to take care of each other. On the other hand, perhaps the commenter wasn't being nefarious at all, probably only doing what LO wants the comments to be about.. .. constructive criticism.. I just don't think the buyers area is the place to do it. Make 'em private, not public.

Yeah, fintastique, I second that.... I'd also like to see 'views'..... I don't understand the 'Popularity' category. It doesn't seem to be related to DL's as I have pix on the first page that have never sold and sellers on the following pages. ?? -tom
Edit: I take that back, I just checked again, everything on the first page "popularity" has sold, but not in order of date of sale or quantity of DL's... I"d still like to see a 'viewed' category. Or even a total views on the portfolio. If there is a way to do this on SS, please enlighten me.

Regarding cleaning out the trash I am quite concerned about having any images that have not been DLed after a year deleted.
I agree whole-heartedly... especially since I just had a couple pix that have been on DT since June 06, that never sold before, just sell this past week. Coming up on 8 months... just because it hasn't sold YET, doesn't mean it won't. Why'd they sit so long before selling? Perhaps a dozen legitimate reasons... like, the right customer just happened along and they finally got a view. ....and a sale. Do I think some of my stuff is crap? Yup, and I'd be glad to take it off myself if it wasn't such a pain in the elbow on some sites. I'd be happy to flush my own. But I don't think I like the idea of them just hitting the delete button at midnight, 12 months.

I just went with FP a few weeks ago, only have a handful of pix there. I haven't noticed so many views... However, I was pleased to see everyone of my pictures show up on page one of mutliple pages of the subjects. I will continue to upload there, understanding that sales will not be typical of microsites. Then again, when/if I make any, they'll be nicer sales. Price-wise, I went with the advice I received here, all priced at $4.00 with sizing options.. I've got one pic priced higher. I like the shot, if someone else likes it, maybe they'll pay the extra bucks. If not, no loss to me. Heck, truth is, it's selling for a quarter elsewhere.... now I think I sound like I'm 'whoring' my pix.......
