Adobe Stock / Re: How to boost DLS from Fotolia?
« on: September 17, 2010, 00:50 »
is there a way to show our profile page in fotolia? when i click my own name i saw only my portfolio and there is no way to show a page with my information or some additional link.

my purpose is to link to fotolia gallery that a buyer can see more similars.

there is also a myfotolia.com to show your own portfolio only but i find it is quite useless.. anyone has experience with myfotolia?

oic..thank you.

it is kind of funny because i guess many users are not aware of this 3rd party program... are only those images in folders are in it? or all portfolio?
The folder is an aapplication. If those pics are good enough, you get included. If not, you get turned down. If you are included, they will go through all of your pics regularly, and choose the ones they want for the Third Party Program.

Make a project folder with your 100 best images and send it to [email protected].

What do they mean by this?  Upload 100 of them all over again in a fresh batch???

Confused.

Nope! Go through your port on Yay. Under each image (not the thumbnails, but the full size image) there is a "add to project folder" button. When completed, go to your folder (there is a link at the top of the Yay site) and choose the "make folder public" option. This generates a link for your folder. Email that link to Yay. Done! Hope that helps, regards, David.

Alamy.com / Re: alamy for beginners
« on: September 14, 2010, 01:16 »
I don't really set 'editorial' for alamy, i think you just need to set no model release and no property release for it.

I don't think an agency will change the license without informing you.

RM to RF is possible, but if an image had been sold as RF, it seems violating the RM license, unless you know who download it and tracked down how it had been used.

Side question. Do Alamy ever change the licence type attached to an image ?  Do the photographers have complete control ? If we set the use to RM and specify editorial use only can we be certain that this will stick ? If an image is specifies as RM is there any danger of it being switched ?

956
how about this image? what do you think? RF or RM? thanks.

oic, thank you for the link, my screen can only see the black from level 5..

Hi all,

I have a question that should we adjust our monitor brightness to the maximum during photoshop post process? or you use the histogram chart rather than eye?

Huey Pro calibrated

I don't care how much someone thinks they can calibrate by eye, since perceptions change, it's never going to be consistent. Room lighting changes which means your brightness needs to change if it's daytime, nighttime or what lights you have on. I still use a calibrated CRT because of the colors being true. I'm sure some of the expensive LCDs are excellent now, I just done have bags full of cash to buy one. :)

Try this test and see if your monitor has enough range and shows differences at the ends of the scale. (Monitor Black Point test)

http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/Calibration/monitor_black.htm

If your monitor isn't capable of showing what you need to see, accurately, adjusting doesn't make much sense because it's a waste of time.

how about what kind of buyer in RM and RF market?

to my understand, the RF buyer is graphic designer for flyer..website designer.

so at what situation, a buyer will need to source for an RM image? a commercial advertisement that want exclusive image? a book cover?

anyone can give some advise what kind of situation a buyer will look for RM image?

no problem to ask more question in this thread.

what i know is the length of clip is like from 3 second up to 60 seconds, i am not sure if longer better.
but base on what i read, it is same as image that no commercial sign or other copyright objects, since it is for RF license. I see in shutterstock some are for editorial license without model release.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in your thread to ask some beginner questions also.

Is there a general rule of thumb for length of the clip?

Will a simple keyword search show how saturated a subject is?

Is it best to leave the clips in original format for buyer to decide or should they be graded for maximum effectiveness?

Is shooting in anamorphic an acceptable format?

I know obviously branded objects are one to look out for but what about larger objects like cars, boats, houses, buildings?  Say i wanted to shoot something luxurious and shot a ferrari, avoiding the obvious badges, because everyone knows what a ferrari looks like, will there be an issue?  I see it in music video clips all the time, do they have to get release forms for that from manufacturer even though it is owned by someone?

Same question applies to say taking people shots and they are wearing branded clothes, shoes, etc...does the rules differ because it is video stock rather than print stock?

Cheers.

oic, thanks for the information, i had just downloaded mpeg streamclip to convert it to .mov, do i have to remove the sound?

i got a stupid question, for video quality, does it have something like noise rejection as photos? i mean due to low light, will it cause any 'noise' on video quality?

Encode your video in QuickTime .MOV format using the "PhotoJPEG" codec at 85% to 95% and remove the audio track.  That is supported everywhere.

You can just do it with QuickTime if you have Pro version.  You might try the free trial of Sony Vegas, it's fully functional for 30-days.  Or search for MPEG Streamclip which is used by many hobbyist stock footage people.

The biggest advice I can give you with footage is BE PATIENT.  It can takes months sometimes for your first sale, depending on how saturated the subject is for your clip.

so adobe has a video editing software too? how about any free software? I have to prepare 1 clip first, i read through those stock video website, it seems different websites are asking for different format..any format that is accepted for everyone?

I use adobe premiere elements 7 for editing video.  Have read some complaints about version 8 though.  It's fairly easy to use, I did look at some youtube tutorials to help when I started.

Don't know if your camera is good enough, have you tried searching on Pond5 to see if anyone uses your camera?  I would just upload 1 clip and see if it is accepted.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Another question - what's in a name?
« on: September 10, 2010, 01:05 »
i guess some people don't use same username as the way to prevent buyers comparing among the prices of different sites.

i choose a normal name, guess a name like xxxstudio sounds more professional but in the end what counts is still in your portfolio.

you can check out my website below for what website i think worth to join. thanks.

Thanks, Traveler, that helps me a lot.  Although I haven't yet applied anywhere else, I did register as a user at a couple of places (not Shutterstock, though, so I'll use the referral link), and I'm trying to use an abbreviated form of my photo biz name where available. So I will hopefully be LFPhoto, as long as it isn't used!

i happened to read the newsletter and realise that you need to apply for the 3rd party program? that's what in their website.

"If you want to join the 3rd party program, you'll need to go through a selection process. Make a project folder with your 100 best images and send it to [email protected]. We will then look at your portfolio and see if it could fit any of our partners. Usually selections are made on a quarterly basis, but this depends on the demands from our partners."

so why not make an option button to opt in or opt out? i totally didn't aware of it till i read the newsletter.

New Sites - General / Re: clipart.com and iclipart.com
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:23 »
hi alison, why not try to share more like what is the commision and what kind of images you are looking for, if the website needs more contributors.

Hi,

Thanks very much for your interest in our website :)

We have a long history with clipart.com (beginning with Zedcor, then ArtToday which we transitioned later into clipart.com) and we left shortly after JupiterMedia purchased these assets and started iCLIPART. It is my understanding that they haven't accepted new images for that site in a very long time.

With regards to licensing your work to iclipart.com you are very welcome to drop me an email and I can explain our terms of use and licensing agreement to you. I would love to see some links to your work too? We keep clipart and illustrations together on our website since our customers really like the mix of styles.

Thanks,
Alison

i had tried filezilla, basically you just connect it to the website server and browse the file to transfer? are there a way to make the same file transfer to multiple location?

New Sites - General / clipart.com and iclipart.com
« on: September 08, 2010, 10:41 »
hi all, anyone contribute to this 2 sites? come to them during surfing.

clipart.com is a division of getty..

iclipart.com is having subscription download too..

anyone know how they pay? and what is the different of clipart and illustration? does it mean clipart is simple illustration?

973
Hi all,

I would like to know what your view about deciding a photo as RF or RM license..

for my understanding,

RF license is one time payment and buyer can use it in many area but the limitation is the image can't be exclusive and can't be tracked of history.

RM license is paid higher price and the price is decided by how long the time, or how it is to be used. The advantage for buyers of RM is the history of usage can be tracked and buyer can have exclusive use of image if they want.

my question is how you decide to make one image RF or RM?

if a texture like brickwall or grass field, guess there is no argument it will go to RF.

editorial go to RM.

how about landscape? street shot? usually what kind of image a buyers are looking for in RM?

974
I think dreamstime is having less problem since if you put categories as illustration and it will appear in search results.

I am quite surprised my 'vector' are not appearing under fotolia search results if one click 'illustration' instead of 'vector'.

dreamstime? i am not sure how the search engine know is it illustration of photos.. it seems the search engine won't know which is  photos or which is illustrations.
In the beginning at DT, there was a problem with buyers who presumed that all images were photos downloading vectors and being upset (this happened to a buyer of one of my vectors ). DT then required that all illustrations, vectors and 3D renders, have the keyword 'illustration'.

I guess this is still the official policy. I put 'illustration' in all my illustrations' keyword lists.

One problem I notice is that some photographers include the keyword 'illustration' in photos which are in no way illustrations, but then there is a lot of keyword spamming on DT. The 'flagging' was supposed to help this but I don't think it has.

hi thomas, i think it is good to upload another raster image in shutterstock, i have raster image from vector that sell too, even vector version are always better sale.

I usually submit just the EPS at Shutterstock. Some weeks ago for the first time ever I uploaded raster versions of 10 of my best selling files, and they hardly sell. Not going to bother with rasters from now on.
