General Stock Discussion / Re: I am a little confused..
« on: April 29, 2013, 15:12 »
They all sort of merge / blend into one.  As a totally generic site I'd call it a stock site.. or stock agency.  Microstock agency would also be a generic term but then it mentions the price and one would expect to pay between $1-$20 for a regular license.

Stock footage is a site that just sells footage.

Some sites are haunted by their past when they only sold one media type.  iStock is also known as iStockPhoto but they also sell audio, video and illustrations.  Shutterstock also started out as photo (the name referring to the shutter of a camera) but also sell illustrations (and video)

Here's the link
https://99designs.com/logo-design/vote-noyfzk

Leave a comment and feel free to type in your username so I can see (for interest) who is voting for what.  These are the top contenders so far - the designers are still at work so I'm open to suggestions and can still request changes / improvements.

.. and make sure you give a vote to the ones you don't like as well so they get ranked properly

Here is a good article on fstoppers about making wise business decisions as a photographer.  yes, they are down on microstock but in general it is pretty sounds business advice IMO

I'm guessing they could ....

Buy a subscription and use some fancy computer robots to download the full pacakge
or
Set up a bot to crawl the web searching for high res images posted on wordpress blogs
or
some other nefarious tactic beyond my imagination.

980
Also good to see you aren't low balling the price too much. You'll get better work for it.

I believe that $299 is the lowest that you can price a logo on that site.

that's right.  I've often went with that price but went with the middle price on this one as this site is a bit more established.

981
Are you the only one able to see the designs or will I be able to see them if I create an account?

It's a 'hidden' contest so no-one except me can see them before the end of the contest.  When the final round comes though, I'll create a poll to get user input from here.

982
A little note: I have got a -1 to one of my previous post.

I completely accept when somebody put a negative vote to my comments.
As we are different and we can have different or opposite points of view I think that is is normal, but I would be very more happy if these people will give the reasons why, and don't hide as cowards behind anonymity.

Thank you for understanding :)

(Now put all the minus that you want here :D :D)

FWIW, I did not give you that -1 and didn't disagree with you, but I do disagree that we should all make a post about why every time we hit the -1.  That would just lead to more of these forum pi$$ing contests, and I think there are already an excess of those.

Some people just like to lurk and read, and use the +/- buttons to weigh in.  I think it's unreasonable and pretty insulting to brand anyone who is anonymous, or who gives a rating without explaining it as "cowardly".  Not everyone is equally outgoing or confrontational.

Ditto.  I think I'll have to change the labels or how they are displayed.  People take too much offense when they get a -1 or -2.  It is simply someone saying they disagree and there is certainly not anything wrong with people disagreeing with something (whether they give reason for it or not)

983
I'm running a contest on 99designs for a new logo for MicrostockGroup.  I've been thinking it's time for a little face lift.  If anyone here is active on that site, feel free to submit a contest entry.

I gave the other thread a better title and will lock this one now.

Thanks Cathy and Gillian for the update on Poncke's absence.  :)

Sometimes it's good to take a breather.  I find I need them more lately.  Things get pretty hot around here!

Here's the full email for anyone who didn't get it.

Quote
Dear contributor,

So that your uploaded files can appear in the right place at the right time, we would like to remind you of a few important indexing guidelines. Respecting these guidelines will increase your visibility and sales on the website, so please take a few minutes to read them.

Our search engine takes the order of the keywords into account as a way of determining the relevancy of each keyword. The most relevant keyword must come first, then the second, etc. Respecting this rule will ensure your images, vectors or videos appear first in search queries made by customers. And remember, there is no need to enter dozens of keywords. Most images can be indexed with 10 or 15 keywords (quality over quantity).

If your previous content was indexed with keywords in alphabetical order, no problem! You now have the possibility to review the keywords ordering for validated files. Go to "Manage my Files" when you are logged in, and click the "edit" link on the content you wish to review. Change the order of your keywords according to relevance, as stated above; validate the conditions; and click the "Submit and finish" button. Your content will be re-indexed and will appear to relevant search requests, ensuring you more sales.

Warning: contributors who try to push irrelevant keywords will be penalized and their portfolio may be blocked or removed.

Respecting these guidelines makes up 80% of good indexing practices, but here are a few more important tips:

- Index your files in one language only
- Compound words should be entered in the same line ("New York" and not "New" and "York")
- Plurals must be added only if it is relevant to the subject
- Do not add antonyms
- Do not add excessive synonyms
- The use of band names as keywords is strictly forbidden
- Proper names should be entered in your language
- Do not enter camera specifications or the type of content

Thank you for taking the time to read these guidelines, may your sales be plentiful in the coming months!

And some workflow tips using the MicrostockGroup tools

Using the keyword tool  When you search for images, the most popular keywords in the images you chose show up first and will appear first in your keyword list when you build it.  If you add keywords yourself, those keywords will be on top of everything.
http://microstockgroup.com/tools/keyword.php

I often build a 'base' set of keywords that will apply to essentially every image in a shoot, then use the keyword compare tool to build a specific list of words for an image.  If you have your base list in area 2, you can add new words to area 1.  Words that are the same in the two lists are given priority and show up first in the final list, then list one is given priority, then list 2.

Thanks for the comment Scott.  It's really nice when you pop in here and set things straight like this.

988
So who is it that gives these images away?

People who don't know any better and people who haven't changed their default setting and their images get dumped in the free bin by default without them even really knowing.

989
I already booked and paid. Is there anyway the discount can be applied retroactively?

Looking forward to seeing you there as well!

I'd sent a note to Lee or Amos and ask (PM me if you need an email).  You are probably one of the first to register, you should be punished for doing so :)

990
MSG also has a discount code.. in the first post -> MSG2013 20% as well.

looking forward to seeing you there again cobalt.

I've trimmed this topic due to back and forth spats, poor attitude and negatively linking contributors portoflios.  I'm guessing the thread will be locked as well if it doesn't improve.

Since there are no photos linked to discuss or no examples and we are just discussing (or fighting about) hypothetical possibilities, I think it would be better if this thread was locked.

... I also feel that 'my image was rejected' threads would be a lot more productive if the image was shown.

994
Well now you've all moved this well off topic, I will attempt to bring it back a little towards subject  ::)

I made the decision but not lightly, out of the 15 agencies I have finally decided to remove my ports from 5.

Not 'may as well leave my pics there and see' attitude, they have had more than their time to perform and still do not So to quote Suggsy 'They failed miserably, you're fired!'

I say no more chances for underperformers, they reserve the right to pick and choose which of your pics they want and still can't sell them? Give them the boot!

By dropping a third of the agencies this really does let me just focus quality time with the ones that have always looked after me well.

Having done the math there is no great loss to me in this culling and the time saved and put into performing agencies should more than make up for it.

Sounds like a smart idea.

Ha, yes lol. How do you like Shutterstock outside of that?

I can't talk about video as I don't do it, but ss on the whole is a well-oiled machine. They seldom don't produce for contributors. Introducing 25 cent subs on BS though sets off alarm bells. Will they one day do an IS and get greedy.
It will be a dark day when Shutterstock introduces 25 cent subs.

ummm..... they do 25c subs, and then you go up the tier as your sales increase
Oh so they already pulled an Istock and got greedy by introducing 25 cent subs.  I wonder how long ago they pulled an Istock?  2004 I think it was, right?
That has to be one of the most bizarre comments I've read in awhile.

huh??  They didn't introduce subs, they've always had it.  It's the only thing they had when they started.  They also haven't ever reduced the payout to photographers - only increased the payout levels.

996
I always said mexpo .. perhaps I was in the 'wrong' camp :)  em-expo is too much work! :)

But yes, looking forward to it as well.  It'll be great to see more of the program get fleshed out.

From the press release

Bruce Livingstone Set to Keynote Global Microstock Expo Where Top Contributors Expand Their Business Revenues and Knowledge

Tickets Now on Sale for 2013 Conference in Berlin, Expanded to Include Video and Illustration Tracks

BERLIN, Germany
: April 23, 2013 Tickets are now available for Microstock Expo 2013,
with expanded tracks focused on video and illustration as well as photos,
powerful masterclasses and abundant networking opportunities with industry
leaders, vendors and service providers. The weekend kicks off with a special
keynote by industry pioneer Bruce Livingstone, founder of iStockphoto and CEO of
the newly minted stock cooperative, Stocksy. In addition, there will be plenty of
opportunity to produce your own high-end stock photos and footage in fully
produced shoots with models, sets and stylists. Microstock Expo will also soon
solicit nominations for the first ever MEXPO awards, recognizing both the serious
and hilarious in the microstock world.
As the microstock industry enters its second decade, several seismic shifts are
happening in the art and business of stock, with very recent industry developments
such as Shutterstocks new Offset collection, and unprecedented changes in the
exclusivity landscape. The most serious professional stock contributors attend
Microstock Expo to connect with peers, discuss trends, negotiate with top vendors
and fresh startups, and investigate time-saving, creativity-boosting workflow
techniques.
The Microstock Expo is the brainchild of longtime microstock insiders and analysts,
Amos Struck and Lee Torrens. Thanks to sponsorship by Shutterstock,
Depositphotos and ProImageExperts, the Expo returns to Berlin, Germany on
November 16 and 17, at the andels hotel, with an optional PhotoWalk on
November 15. Hundreds of professional microstock artists and agency leaders in
video, photo and illustration from across the globe will make connections, add
revenue streams to their businesses and discuss key ways the microstock industry
can continue to evolve.

Early bird tickets are
249 + 19% VAT, until June 1st, when they increase to 299.

The andels hotel offers a rate of
99, including breakfast and in-room Internet.
Lunches are included with the conference passes.
The schedule, speakers and
sessions will be regularly updated on
MicrostockExpo.com as November draws closer.

Why Attend?
At the last Expo, I physically distributed my portfolio to seven new agencies,
increasing my revenue practically overnight, deepened relationships with great
global stock contributors and key vendors, and found more service vendor
partnerships that streamlined my workflow and saved me money, said Andres
Rodriguez, one of the worlds top-selling microstock contributors. Microstock Expo
is enjoyable and engaging, and in my opinion, a powerful investment if you are truly
committed to the business of microstock.
This intimate program is an elite mastermind opportunity for the most serious
contributors in the space, allowing attendees the rare opportunity to make
meaningful impressions and connections with other compelling artists and the most
influential industry agencies.
Microstock Expo features:
Unique presentations from top authorities on increasing revenue and improving skills,
Educational panel presentations from the best experts in the microstock marketplace,
Masterclasses and portfolio reviews from luminaries in video, photo and illustration,
A dynamic exhibit hall with some of the top vendors and service providers in our space.
MEXPO Awards in 10 categories ranging from the serious to hilarious in stock,
Plenty of time to make friends, reconnect with old ones and plan your professional future
