Cameras / Lenses / Canon 6D in camera lens corrections
« on: December 15, 2012, 11:28 »
I have just upgraded from a 40D to a 6D. So far I have only been setting the options and taking test shots.

With my 40D, all lens corrections were made in Lightroom with the lens profiling option for distortion and CA. Now with the 6D, there is the option of doing this in camera.

Does anyone have an opinion of whether one of these options is better than the other?

Veer / Question about Veer Keywords
« on: November 20, 2012, 11:14 »
I have been submitting to Veer not realizing they had a dictionary of keywords. I just upload and submit.

Yesterday I realized that if go to the keywords before submitting, it has a dictionary to clarify anything that could have more than 1 meaning. So I checked my portfolio and many keywords are missing. For example, pictures of beaches in Bermuda do not have the Bermuda keyword. They were dropped as I did not clarify the meaning of Bermuda.

So I figure I have to go through and reenter keywords on all my photos. But I cannot find how to add/delete/modify keywords for already existing accepted photos. Can someone please tell me how to do this? It is probably right in front of me on the screen but I cannot find it.

General Stock Discussion / Someone hacked my accounts
« on: March 15, 2012, 22:08 »
I has a couple emails today that I changed email address on on some of my accounts. I did not do this. Someone has somehow gotten into my Shutterstock, Fotolia, Dreamstime, and Bigstock accounts. They have added their email address in payout options, requested payouts, and in some cases changed the password and I cannot log in now.

I have sent support emails to all 4 sites.

What a mess.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Once I can get back into my accounts I will of course create new passwords. What else do I need to do.

In the case of Shutterstock, the email says what the email address was changed to. It is a gmail address. Anyway this can be traced?

Envato / Dune and Graphic River
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:44 »
I am loading my Portfolio to PhotoDune. I had a rejection for a photo that said it would be better off in Graphic River. I checked out Graphic River and saw that Isolated Images are one of the items they accept.

For those of you that upload to PhotoDune, do you also upload your isolation shots to Graphic River? Is it ok to upload the same isolations to both PhotoDune and Graphic River?

Yaymicro / Yay Micro Rejection help
« on: June 14, 2011, 19:34 »
For those of you that submit to Yay Micro, how difficult/easy is it to get photos accepted?

I figured I would pick a site I was not on yet and start submitting to them. I tried Yay Micro. I submitted 20 photos to start. All 20 were rejected for "Technical Issues".  I am not sure if I did something wrong with the sizing of the photos or did not meet some requirement, but I know they are large enough.

All photos are with about 10 other sites. If they do not want my photos I am fine with that, but I am trying to determine if I did something wrong and can correct it.

Thanks for any help you can provide

Lighting / Help with Lighting Equipment Purchase
« on: April 25, 2010, 11:35 »
I want to by some lighting equipment. I have decided on going with Alien Bees. This will be for my home basement. To start, I will mostly be learning to do still life, isolation, food, etc. shots. But I want to be able to also use whatever I purchase for eventually learning to shoot people.

I currently have two light stands and two umbrellas at home. Below is what I am thinking of getting. Is there anything missing that I should also get right from the start.

1) Either Three B1600's or Three of the new Einstein's
2) One 13 foot Air Cushioned Stand
3) One Giant Softbox
4) One Cyber Commander
5) Three Cybersync Receivers

Is there anything I am missing that I should get now? Should I get a second softbox (and stand)?

I would appreciate any suggestions or comments so I get the right equipment from the start.

Thanks.

General Stock Discussion / Lighting Equipment Purchase
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:18 »
I am looking to buy some lighting equipment in the next few weeks. Initially this will be mostly for still life work, Isolated images, etc. But whatever I buy, I want it to be good enough for use in the future for people shots too. I do not want to start over again buying new equipment, but rather I will keep adding to what I have. I will also try some people shots with whatever I buy now, but probably not too much yet.

Currently, I have two light stands, Two white umbrellas (can be used both as reflective and shoot through), 1 pair of Pocket Wizards, 1 Canon 430EX Flash, 1 Vivitar 285HV.

I plan on spending up to a max of about $1,200 for new equipment.

So far, I am considering getting:

1) Two Alienbees B1600 flash units
2) One Heavy Duty Light Stand
3) One Softbox

I would appreciate any comments and/or advice that anyone may have.

Some specific questions I have are:

1)Should I purchase Three B1600's instead of Two? I am thinking maybe I will need too so I have a background light for blowing out backgrounds.

2) Alienbees has several size softboxes. 24X36, 32X40, 30X60. Which should I get? Is it best to get the largest one?

3) Is there anything else I should get now that I will have a hard time getting by without?

4) Will I be able to use these flash units in slave mode or am I going to need additional remote triggers? (Pocket Wizards since that is what I have now).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Panthermedia.net / Need help interpreting Panthermedia message
« on: February 13, 2008, 21:18 »
Is there someone can interpret the below for me? I started submitting to Panthermedia because of the threads I have seen in the forums here. My first two were reviewed. Once says it is accepted. One says it will be accepted after modifications. But the message for what needs to be done is:

Reason: Bitte Detailangaben ergnzen (bei Tieren/Pflanzen: Rasse/Art; bei Stdtefotos: Stdtenamen/Land, etc.)

Could someone tell me what this says in English?

Thanks

Zymmetrical.com / Zymmetrical questions
« on: February 02, 2008, 21:58 »
I am beginning to upload to Zymmetrical. I have two questions I hope someone can answer for me.

1) Keywords - It seems that the first 20 keywords are taken from IPTC data. I uploaded a few photos and need to change these. I see the keywords that were taken from IPTC data. When I go into the moify keyword option, there are 20 blank boxes. If I want to add 1 keyword, do I have to repeat all the ones that already exist too? I tried one as a test, but the new keywords I added have not taken effect. How does this work?

2) I cannot FTP. Below is the error I get. Has anyone else experienced this?

Response:   220 Zymmetrical FTP Server ready...
Command:   USER sbonk
Response:   331 User name okay, need password.
Command:   PASS *******
Response:   530 Not logged in.
Error:   Could not connect to server

Has anyone used a Dane Compact Flash with the Canon 40D? I bought a 4GB Dane card and it will not work. It actually locks up my 40D and I have to remove the battery to get the camera working again. My other flashcards work fine so I am sure the problem is not the camera. I am not sure if this is a general problem with Dane brand or if it is just this one particular card.

General - Top Sites / How to change email address at 123RF?
« on: January 20, 2008, 18:35 »
I am switching internet access from cable to fiber optics and will no longer have my current email address once the change is done in about a week. I changed my email address with most microstock sites but cannot figure out how to do it at 123RF. When you access your profile information here, email address cannot be updated. Does anyone how to change this?

I did send them an email but so far did not get a response back. It has only been 24 hours though.

I have the same problem with microstockphoto and usphotostock. I do not upload there any more and will probably never get a payout, but I figure I will change it anyway. Does anyone know how to do it at these sites?

Thanks!

Off Topic / Can you recommend a printer for prints on Canvas
« on: December 03, 2007, 22:18 »
I want to try a print to canvas. This will be my first time. Can anyone recommend a good online site where I can order canvas prints? Most that I have found limit you to canned sizes. You must then crop your photo to fit one of there sizes. I want to be able to print at any size. For example, the photo I want to try first would be in a size of about 15X23. Most places seem to want 16X20. If you not send that size, they will crop your photo.

Cameras / Lenses / Need help with new 40D and Lightroom
« on: November 10, 2007, 13:06 »
I just bought a new camera. Canon 40D. I tried a few test shots and tried to import into Lightroom but I get an error about an "unsupported color mode". Photos were shot in RAW (not sRAW). Color mode was Adobe RGB. Version of Lightroom is 1.2 (the latest).

I find other people that had this trouble when doing a google search, but usually they were using sRAW and were ok when using RAW. I tried reinstalling the latest version of Lightroom. Still does not work.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

SnapVillage.com / Snap Village keyword question
« on: October 04, 2007, 19:25 »
I uploaded a few images to SV when they first came online but stopped since they did not read IPTC data. Since they now do read IPTC data I figured I would start uploading again.

I uploaded 15 images this past weekend and they were approved today. However, only a limited number of keywords exist for each photo. All my keywords were read when I uploaded, but it seems that either they were later replaced by new ones or they only took some of them and deleted the rest. Is this the case with everyone? Do they limit the keywords?

As an example, some of the keywords that were deleted for the below photo of The Burren in Ireland are: Burren, rural, scenic, Galway, and several others.

NOTE: I put the photo here from SS b/c for some reason the one from SV was not displaying. Also, I checked all 15 newly uploaded photos and 2 of them contain all the keywords I supplied. The other 13 have been limited.

I want to buy some white translucent acrylic to try lighting from behind for some isolation shots. I have found acrylic that allows 20-29% of light to pass through and one that allows 40-49% to pass through. Which one of these would be best?

Also, would it make a difference if the acrylic is 1/8th inch or 1/4 inch?

Thanks for any help.

Adobe Stock / Can you reorder Fotolia keywords?
« on: September 06, 2007, 20:00 »
Last week I started going through my Fotolio portfolio and making sure that the most important keywords are in the top 7. I had not been doing a good job of this in the past when uploading.

However, when I do a search using keywords that I have now placed in the top 7, my photos are still not coming up. Is there a way to successfully reorder?

General Stock Discussion / Request for RAW file
« on: August 14, 2007, 19:13 »
I had an email today saying that a buyer requested a RAW format version of one of my photos. The mail said to either upload the RAW file or just do nothing if I was not interested or did not have it.

I will not upload the RAW format for a $0.50 or $1.00 sale. I am not sure if I would for an EL sale. I am interested to hear from others that had the RAW file requested as to how you handled it. Or even from people that have not had this requested but have ideas on what they would do.

Thanks for any suggestions.
Steve

General Stock Discussion / Trip to Ireland
« on: July 02, 2007, 20:14 »
I am leaving New Jersey in the USA on Friday for a week in Ireland. I am bringing:

Camera (Canon XT)
External flash and batteries
Three 2 gig flashcards
A Wolverine 100gig storage unit
tripod
70-300 lens
24-70 lens
10-22 lens
travel converter so I plug stuff in over there
3 camera batteries and charger

I am leaving my 100mm macro and my 50mm f/1.8 at home to save space in my bag.

Am I missing anything? I do not want to get there and find I should have bought/brought additional equipment.

Photo Critique / Please help critique
« on: June 08, 2007, 10:55 »
I am trying to learn to shoot people for stock. I am currently not very good at people shots but I am practicing. Below is a link to a photo I recently submitted to several sites. It was accepted on most sites but rejected by one. I would like to learn from this and see how I could improve this shot.

If you do not mind, please take a look at the photo and tell me what you think? How could it be improved? Would it be better with a different background? How do you think it is for a STOCK photo? Will it sell?

I do not want to put the rejection reason in here now because it would probably influence people. But it was not a rejection that you would need a 100% crop for.

Also, I am not posting this complaining about a rejection. I want to learn how to shoot people for stock so I can hopefully increase by stock revenue.

Thanks for any feedback.

I spent some time photographing my son and two friends at a skateboard park yesterday. I am not happy with the results. Besides images specifically for stock, I mostly enjoy nature photography and I am not experienced with sports/action photography. I am going to describe what I did yesterday. Can anyone offer advice as to what I should do differently?

I was using a Rebel XT and a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens. In Aperture Priority I set to f/5. I used ISO 100. I used AI Servo focus mode. I then followed the skater until he was at the spot or pose I wanted and took the shot. This gave me a SS of about 1/1000. Occasionally it would drop to 1/800 which was not fast enough. I then went up to ISO 200 and this was fine for the needed SS. I also tried opening up the lens more for some shots and left it on ISO 100. Also tried single shot focus mode, pre focused and a particular spot, and waited for the skater to skate into the frame. This did not work well for me because the skater was not always in the best position or best skating trick at that exact spot.

Maybe I would have been better off in Shutter Priority mode with a set SS of around 1/1200 or so? How do others approach this type of shooting? I would appreciate any help or advice.

General Stock Discussion / How much saturation?
« on: March 29, 2007, 14:54 »
My better selling images seem to be the most colorful and saturated ones. So I tried an experiment and took an image to what I think is the extreme, going past what I would normally do. A link to the photo is pasted below and is getting a pretty good amount of downloads.

Do you think this is oversatured or should I be doing this with more of my photos?

Note: I say Saturation but do not actually use the PS Saturation tool.

General Stock Discussion / Photos purchased on multiple sites
« on: February 16, 2007, 20:35 »
This may be a strange question/comment. I find that sometimes I get photos that are rarely downloaded or in some cases never downloaded suddenly purchased on more than 1 site on the same day. Sometimes 2 sites, sometimes 3 sites. I guess my question is: Can downloading the same photo from multiple sites actually act as a type of extended license? They would be additive, right?

iStockPhoto.com / Istock rejection for keywords
« on: February 15, 2007, 21:03 »
I just had an istock rejection for keywords not relevant. This is the first time I have had this. Please tell me if you think the keyword stated as being inappropriate really are inappropriate in your opinion.

The photo is a poker chip isolated on a white background. Keywords they said were no good are below.

cards, casino, casinos, gambler, leisure, money, strategy, vegas, winner, winning, win

General Stock Discussion / Trip to Ireland
« on: February 04, 2007, 16:10 »
I am going to Ireland in July (I live in the USA). I want to be prepared for getting lots of stock images and do not want to screw this up. What additional equipment or supplies should I bring?

I currently have

Canon Rebel XT
Canon 70-300 IS USM
Canon 100mm macro
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 24-70
Tripod
Three 2GB flash cards

I plan on purchasing the Canon 10-22 before I go. I will also buy additional flash cards or else some time of portable storage unit.

Is there anything I am missing that I should bring?
