Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock 1099s - VENT
« on: February 01, 2024, 10:51 »
I dont care.  I just track all my income and report it.

Same here been doing this way since 2010. I only report income that has been paid to me.

The number on their 1099 never matches what I show, even though it's taken from their own monthly earnings summary; and I don't have a lot of downloads, so there shouldn't be a 14% difference. But my tax prep guy said that if I report mine and it doesn't match theirs, I could get questioned about it down the line.

I got the link today, but the form won't download.

Same

Same!  I think they put this out there knowing that there was nothing to download. Two days ago, they said by January 31. This morning's email said in March. Later today they said between now and March 1. And the initial explanation was that they couldn't generate the download link. The very last email from them today said "check again tomorrow."
I suspect they made this page and send the notice in order to cover themselves and show that they tried to get them out by January 31 as required, but knowing that the downloads wouldn't show up, so they could blame it on a systems glitch. (And their contact link still doesn't work).

FYI - seems US 1099s are going to be late.
I got an email from Shutterstock two days ago saying that the link to download 1099s would be available on January 31.  Today (January 31) with no link, I emailed them again. Now they tell me that, because of the "generation of the format of the download link", it will be sometime in March. I'm annoyed at in "fixing" the site, the contact link doesn't work, and now in only two days, they have broken the download link.
Per my tax preparer, who is also an IRS agent, their deadline for 1099 filing is today.

ETA last email from Shutterstock, which is the third in three days, now says it will be sometime between January 1 and March 1. Still a month past the due date.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: September 06, 2019, 12:27 »
Hey guys

I dropped Alamy about three years ago, after I've been on the platform for maybe 2-3 years - without any sales. I remember the upload process and all the keywording etc to be such a hassle, that I just gave up on it.

I'm now doing a little research to see what other photographers do with their stock portfolio, and how they "make things happen". Many are talking about Alamy as a good source of income.

Has the upload process changed at Alamy, are you guys selling anything, is it worth it to create a new profile and try again? Please let me have your input.

I tried Alamy for a short time, less than a year, albeit with a very small portfolio as kind of a test.  Literally no action, not a one, so I dropped it. Six months after closing the account, I got a $150 d/l.  I questioned it, but they said there can be a delay in payment.  So I reopened it. :)

I don't find their upload process terribly tedious. I was able to upload in bulk, but then of course, have to tag a lot of things that I didn't include metadata for to start with.  I'm not into stock very much anymore due to personal circumstances, admittedly I'm not putting much work into it anymore, but I'm fine with getting a surprise payment now and then.  :)

i) Your images will be removed from sale on our website within the time period specified in your contract
ii) Getty Images / iStock and Distributors will have the right to renew licenses per the terms of your Agreement

So they can sell but you will not get any profits ?
How i can see if any of my images its still there ?

I dont like it at all

You can request an "Open License Report" from them through the ESP site.  However, they send you a link to download it, which you can't get to if they've already closed your account . . . so kind of a moot point, but if you have no open licenses that would fall under this, they will tell you in addition to giving you the useless link.

Rob got it too.  :(

Basically, Donald Gruener's position was determined by Getty to be no longer needed and he's gone as of March 31.   :(

When I go to the Royalties tab, then the Export tab and download the "iStock Historical Royalties" file all the past earnings stated there for each month are wrong when compared to this info http://www.istockphoto.com/user_stats.php?Offset=0&DownloadsGraphFileType and what I actually got paid. Anyone else have slightly different numbers there? And I dont mean just December, but all the months.

Yes, mine are different, not by a large $ amount, but by a huge %age.

I have very little confidence in their ability to report things properly and zero confidence of them to do it in a timely manner. I don't have much confidence of them to get it correct either.

Based on the fact that in addition to not being able to report correctly or on time or at all, there's also an issue with images appearing and mysteriously disappearing after acceptance -- and a few people reporting that other people's images are in their portfolio.  I have ZERO confidence in their ability to report properly. How can they, if images aren't even in the right portfolios?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pexel & Pixabay

How do contributors to these sites Pexel & Pixabay make money? I can tell that the sites themselves are making money from ads and donations but it seems as though the photographers are just giving their stuff away!

The contributors make nothing, users of the images don't even have to give attribution.  But there is at least one RedBubble seller who is selling merchandise from these free pictures, and apparently that's okay, with both the free image sites and with RedBubble.

I'm banned from SS forums. Can someone go poke their head in and see if admins are chiming in and repost back here?

There are four threads going on in there on this topic, but so far no admins have chimed in.

13
Wow -- images being deleted because of this now too.   (per three reports so far in the contributors forum)

14
Looks like a lot of people got that.   I went back and double-checked, because I'm very careful of keywording.   My keywords have been replaced in many cases with words from the title or description, and now include all single-word keywords, including "the", "on", "of", "with".    Maybe they're going to one-word keywords like Dreamstime uses?

Someone just posted in the FB group that if you go to the stuck file, click edit, and save, it unlocks.   Tried it and it worked.

Non-exclusive, and it's running a consistent 3 weeks for me - and then of course however much time it spends in "this file is publishing" post-inspection, which is going on several days.

17
I saw this a couple days ago.  I no longer have an account at iStock, but would sometimes peek back at the forums.   As of two days ago, I could no longer see the forums.

I appreciate the response Mat, and your checking into it.  I have to say though that I'm really disappointed with the other people at Fotolia for not knowing this (or not thinking it important enough to look into) when it was first reported a week ago.  Thanks for the info!

One other question though, the original person at Fotolia that was asked about this said that an extended license was required to be purchased to sell such derivative works.  Does the fact that they have an api key change anything about this requirement?

19
They had one of mine on their site literally the day after it was accepted by Fotolia.   :(      If you find one of your images, then down on the lower right side of the page there is a tab marked "Author Portfolio" where they show other images.  However, I've found a whole lot more than what is in that tab, and it does seem like they have the entire portfolio.

20
Fotolia responded and wrote "they are nor resellers of Fotolia, it seems they are selling derivative products such as canvas and wall stickers with those images.  Note that in order to do so, they need to purchase the files with an Extended RF license."   Then they asked me to send a DMCA complaint notice to them (Fotolia).

Adobe Stock / Suspicious website offering Fotolia images??
« on: May 18, 2015, 09:07 »
I noticed this site offering derivative products from Fotolia images -- looks like they scraped the whole site, because all of the images have Fotolia watermarks.   Fotolia says they're not a partner site, and that in order to sell these, they would need to buy an extended license, which they haven't on any of mine (nor for two other Fotolia people I checked with whose images are here also).   Fotolia has been notified (the only guy that deals with this was out of the office for the week), and the website company hasn't responded to two emails.

Does anyone here know anything about this site?

Sean is on them, hunting their twitter feed for stocksy customers :)

https://twitter.com/iStock/status/440876736956219393
I don't want to offend anyone, but I probably will. This is just pathetic, regardless of how much I don't like iStock.

Or maybe I'm just conservative and have an outdated view on professionalism, and this is how you do marketing in the modern times. In any case, I would never spam like this.

Go ahead, downvote.

You think it's wrong to try to help people who can't buy images they need for project deadlines?
You'd rather the customers just failed?

And, as has been said already, after they way they treated Sean, he's got every right.

That's what I was thinking -- he was offering help to people under deadlines, and as I recall, he even got a thank you.  I've seen a couple of suggestions from others that they visit other sites.
